Interesting show tonight! :D I think the non "rock" songs are to see what the contestants vocal abilities and ranges are and also to test their creativity.

My humble opinions . . . ;)

The 3 strongest performances:
Dilana (Ring of Fire), Lukas (Don't Panic) and Toby (Somebody Told Me). They all have had two great performances in a row. Dilana blew everyone out of the water with her performance! Lukas was a bit annoying last week but he does have the pipes and the stage presence. Toby has a great voice and a lot of charisma.

The 3 weakest performances:

Zayra (You Really Got Me), Chris (Take Me Out) and Jill (Violet). I think that Zayra is being tripped up by her accent and her lack of knowledge about the songs. I think she would be a better singer if she sang material that she was more familiar with or possibly a different type of music.

I find Chris lacks stage presence and his voice is the same all the time, he has no vocal range and personally I find his performances boring. Jill just killed that song this week and her Courtney Love impersonation was sad - Dave's comments were right on the money.

Not right for this venue:

Dana (Born to Be Wild), Jenny (Tainted Love), Josh (Arms Wide Open). Dana is just too sweet and although she has a nice voice it is not a rock voice. I felt like I was watching a country pop singer covering a rock tune. Jenny is also too sweet looking and sounding. She has a great voice but I felt like she should be singing Jewel cover tunes. I think that her version of Tainted Love was one of the worst I've heard outside of that rap song that uses it. Josh has a great voice but I don't think suits hard rock music. Maybe if they all step it up a notch next week they will stick around longer.

Showing improvement:
Phil, Magni, Ryan and Patrice all had better performances than last week.

What the heck happened?:
Storm (Surrender) I thought she came out of the gate as a strong contender last week but this song was so-so. Also her hair and makeup made me think of the Spice Girls for some reason.

Suzanne 3FC 07-11-2006 11:34 PM

I totally agree! Well, almost

I loved Lukas last week, but he wasn't as exciting tonight. Still love Dilana.

I think they were too hard in Jill. Sure, the copycat outfit didn't do anything for me, but I thought she sang it very well. Still, it lacked the power that she had last week when she covered Janis Joplin.

Storm was annoying. I can't stand the whole "wide eyed" face-making that is supposed to be what... wild? extreme? scary? shocking? It's just annoying. Fake and annoying.

My prediction right now-- Dilana, with Lukas coming in close. Anyone want to bet a twinkie?

mauvaisroux 07-12-2006 12:04 AM

I think the problem was that Jill didn't take that song and make it her own. She tried to copy Courtney Love's vocals and personal style and only Courtney can get away with screaming out that song. Jill lacked originality this time and might end up paying the price for it.

It is too bad cause she rocked the place last week. :(

Guess we'll find out tomorrow! :D

I was just amazed (and not in the good way) by last night's show. I am not sure I understand the band very well. They don't seem to vocalize what they want well. They said in the very beginning that this wouldn't be like any other project the band worked on, but kept asking people to sound just like what they used to sound like. I wonder *which* sound they are looking for. It isn't like anyone would ever confuse Master of Puppets with Girls Girls Girls.

I still love Josh, but can't see him winning. He really is an amazing singer.

I think the only 3 that have a real shot of winning may be Toby, Magni, and Dilana. I will admit I missed Lukas' song.

And I would put Phil in the bottom 3 again. I thought his cover of Tonic was awful!

jules1216 07-12-2006 08:04 AM

IMHO.....

I still don't like Magni or Jill or Zayra or Chris (and I love that song!!) There are a few others that I can see improving but these four didn't do it for me this week again and with such strong personalities I don't see them "thinking" they need to really change anything.

I really liked Jenny's Tainted love version--loved how it started slow and then went hard--loved the contrast. Dilana is the most mesmerizing performer there--loved the Johnny Cash song. She is definietly talented. Hubby came in and doesn't like this kind of show so I didn't see even all of Lukas.

I think the women are definitely stronger--but will the group pick a woman for the lead singer of their group?

Here are my impressions:

Mangy - much improved from last week; far better stage presence. *Could* become a dark horse contender.

Jenny - I thought she would do better singing Natalie Merchant covers (rather than Jewel). I don't think she rocked it enough.

Jill - BAD courtney impersonation!

Zayra - another black unitard (or is it the same one?). She sings alright, but not for this band. I kind of liked her interpretation of the song - she cracked me up with her exchange with the judges, too. She is not long for the competition.

Chris - much better than "Roxanne"; not bad, not outstanding

Dilana - Mezmerizing! And the house band sounded so awesome!

Josh - I just don't like his style/voice and I hate the song. I find the head rosking thing really annoying.

Phil - another one with the twitching/swaying! I just don't think his voice is strong enough.

Storm - Great voice. I'd like to see her do something more current (Pinball Wizard and Surrender are both 70's - can we get with the new millenium?)

Patrice - she reminds me of Cheryl Crow and I didn't think she rocked Nirvana.

Lukas - I had a hard time hearing him sing at times, he seemed drown out by the music. He's not as great as he thinks he is.

Ryan - Not bad, but he seemed to be straining when he was "yelling" lyrics.

Dana - "Born to be Mild" summed it up nicely. I see her as the next Nashville Rocker, but not the frontman for Supernova.

Toby - hottie! A good, solid performance.

I am glad the judges were more critical last night, but I think some of their comments were weak and not especially helpful from a technical standpoint. What happened to the producer guy? He made the best comments/criticisms last week, I think.

My top three were Dilana, Toby and Storm;
My bottom three were Jill, Zayra and Josh.

mauvaisroux 07-12-2006 06:58 PM

I agree, the comments weren't very constructive.

Any thoughts on who is going home tonight? I'm thinking it may be Zayra or Chris if they are in the bottom 3.

I hope Dilana gets the encore tonight - I would love to hear her version of Ring of Fire again. :)

Notice MTHead and I used the same exact word for Dilana while posting at almost the same exact moment--she almost pulls you into the TV and the crowd there is wild for her....

mauvaisroux 07-12-2006 09:07 PM

I agree, Dilana is mesmerizing! :)

Ha! I knew Chris was going to get the boot tonight! I'm glad too! No harm to the guy and I hope he is successful in the future but I don't think I could have sat through another performance of his. There was just something about his voice I did not like.

I'm surprised that Zayra did the same song again but it was an improvement over last night's performance. Did you see her face when Jill was singing Bring Me to Life? She looked half jealous and half worried. Jill's version was way better than Zayra's version of that song last week.

I'm so glad that Jill redeemed herself after the "Violet" fiasco. I knew she could sing better than that!

On a fashion note - I loved the top that Brooke was wearing!

jules1216 07-12-2006 09:20 PM

Even Dave loved Brooke's top....

I agree that Jill did do the song better than Zayra, and Z did look worried--makes you wonder if Jill picked it so there would be the comparison???

I felt sorry for Chris but I have to agree with Mauvaisroux, I wish him no harm, but he just didn't do it for me. Actually all three are three of my bottom four.

We will have to see if Jill and Z redeem themselves next week.

mauvaisroux 07-12-2006 09:42 PM

ech! I hate Dave's cheesy comments about Brooke's outfits - it bugged me last season too. :p

jules1216 07-12-2006 09:50 PM

Makes you wonder what Carmen thinks.....

MTHead 07-13-2006 08:57 AM

I saw Zayra's face, too, during Jill's performance - it was priceless. I think the guys know they are not going to pick Z, but decided to keep her around b/c (1) she did a better job with the song the second time around, and (2) she is hot. Does she, or Jenny for that matter, really have a shot at this? Probably not, but Z is more entertaining than Chris. I missed Chris' performance last night, though, so I can't say he was the worst of the bunch.

jules1216 07-13-2006 11:17 AM

I don't think stage presence is something that can be learned--it can be improved but you have to have it in the first place-as much as I don't care for Z and Jill--they are more entertaining.

IMHO
my two top picks are Toby & Dilana
my bottom four were/are Jill, Z,Chris & Magni

I also like Jenny so far and am undecided on some of the others

mauvaisroux 07-13-2006 03:03 PM

I think that Zayra should go next if she doesn't get her act together.

I think the 2 biggest threats in this competition so far are Dilana and Toby. But that could change over the course of the next few weeks. ;)
