Default Who else loves motorcycles? :D

Whoever else loves motorcycles - please post your weight loss/more fit lifestyle story here! and how motorcycles fit into your life.

My motorcycle was a big motivator for me to try to lose some weight and get in shape. In winter of 2001/2002, I was overweight, tired, uncomfortable, miserable! I found the 3FC site, and hooked up with the "Doing It The Old Fashioned Way" (counting calories and exercising) thread. As I (slowly) progressed, I needed something to work towards...and learning to ride a motorcycle was what I decided on.

I had always loved to ride behind my husband, but once the children started arriving, we didn't keep a bike anymore. As my children got older (at that time in 2002, 21 and 13) I felt that it was time for ME.

I researched and found that most states offer the Motorcycle Safety Foundation beginner's course, for a nominal fee. I called in early spring, but the courses fill up quickly, and I couldn't get a spot until early August.

On Mother's Day 2002, I was presented with my gift, an '02 Honda Shadow VTX 600 (I had some estate money from my departed dad to play with.) I was so afraid of it it looked huge! I really, really wanted to start on something small, like a Rebel 250, but we couldn't find anything like that.

In our state, to get a learner's permit, you study the booklet, then go to MV and take the written test. If you pass the test, you're issued a permit, which allows you to ride the motorcycle during daylight hours, on public roads, only in the state, and no passenger.

On my first try, in a school parking lot, I promptly dumped it The weight took me by surprise, when I gently braked, I wasn't prepared, and we tipped over slowly good thing I had heavy jeans and over-the-ankle boots on, no bruises or scrapes. We picked it up off me and I went at it again.

Over the next few weeks, my parking lot circles got bigger, and I progressed to public roads, going so slowly it was laughable. But I was going at my own pace. The first time I went into town, I was so nervous! But each trip gave me more confidence.

In July, I felt confident enough to ride to my work, which is at the end of a 2 mile dirt road. I was super-nervous, but I did it without mishap! again, each time I had a triumph, it fueled my confidence.

When the time for the course came, I had a couple hundred miles experience, but the course taught me alot. I was really afraid that I had botched the serpentine test, but when I was told I passed, I was on cloud nine!

There's a certain pride that I think women riders have. For me, it's from mastering (well, always learning) something that is mostly male-dominated. The actual riding itself is so exhilarating. I just love it!

The next year, we took a week to ride to St. Louis, to meet some other people under the St. Louis arch. One of our guys rode from San Francisco, by himself. Others came from MA, and TN. This trip gave me so much experience in riding on big highways, dealing with tractor trailers, all kinds of weather, etc. But riding through small-town America was great - at lunch places, diners, folks would come right up to us to ask where we were from, where we were going, with their own motorcycle tales. It was great.

This past year (May '04) we took a week to ride to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for Bike Week. Another awesome trip! but even better, as we went south and got sun and warmth.

This year, I want to go to Myrtle Beach again for our big trip. Then through out the summer, there are rides and rallies that we can hopefully make for a day trip or two.

Okay, I've hogged enough space I'll get some pics of my baby also

oh yes - do you have a road name? I'm Cupcake

Hey Cupcake,

I learned to ride when I was 21 in Phoenix,Ar. My husband had a Truimph and there was no helmet law. That was in 1971, when it was not really a chick thing. Then we sold that bike, years went by. We then got a Honda Shadow in the 80's and I only rode on the back.
In 2002 I took the Motor Cycle Safety class, bought by boyfriends Harley Dyna Low Rider and have been riding ever since. Oh, I also married that boyfriend, who rides an Ultra Classic.
We rode to the Harley 100th Anniversary in Milwaukee summer before last. We also like to ride all over Michigan with biker friends, go on Charity rides with our HOG chapter and shorth trips when we can. When we went to Milwaukee we went thru the Upper Pennisula and came back home by ferry, it was awesome.
My weight loss has been a journey, I'm now on the streach to the home number, only about 15 pounds to go. My feeling is I don't want to be a fat biker chick, I'm going for the hot biker babe look......lol
I don't have a nick name although in our chapter most riders do....I just never picked one and was never given one (as often is the case).
Well, thats about it. Only our riding season here is too short and would love to retire one day where we have the ability to ride year round......

Default Greetings Biker Chicks!

Hi Star and Cupcake,

Nice to read about motorcycles. I love them myself, and rode way back when there were no helmet laws.

I live in the mountains outside of Oroville, CA. In August we have a motorcyle run to benefit our Grange. The entry fee is an unwrapped toy. (We use these for our kids Christmas party - there are a lot of children up here in Feather Falls that otherwise would not have a Christmas). We also provide breakfast, plus after the run, at the local (only one) saloon, The Goldflake, is a pot luck, music, dancing, raffles, etc. It really is a lot of fun.
If you guys are ever out this way the end of August, it is a fun time. Our other friends tie it in with Street Vibrations up in Reno.

In the winter, we a have snow mobile club and runs.

We don't ride (hubby is former California Highway Patrol and saw too many accidents). Now he has a bad back, hips and legs. Me, I still love them!

We are struggling with our weight loss program. He's 63 and I am 57, and it seems the older you get the harder you fight for each pound! But, we are working at it.

Good luck and good riding!

Joanne

Another thing I forgot (I'm old and blonde)....lol
We got married the day before Valentines Day 2003, at a Pistons Basketball game. It was a mass wedding, 25 couples got hitched. It was alot of fun. I wore my leather pants and fancy Harley top. The pants are too big for me now. Joanne, I'm 55 and I have to agree this weight thing gets harder to control with every new year. My motivation - I never plan on wearing a moo-moo..........
Later.....Star

Hi there!

I've just passed my bike test in the UK.

Before we get on the road we have to take a one day course (Compulsory Basic Training) then you can ride anywhere apart from motorways and without a pillion passenger.

You then have to take a theory test(multiple choice) with a video section called hazard awaremess, where you click the mouse for a hazard.

You then get to take your proper test, if you want to ride over 500cc and 33bhp you have to take a direct access scheme and ride with an instructor all the time you're learning. If you can cope with being on a bike under 33bhp then you can ride by yourself and for 2 years after your test you can only ride up to 33bhp.

I did my training in August and my theory in November. I took my test in Dec but failed on a U turn (I put my foot down), then I had a test on Jan 12th and they cancelled it because the examiners car had broken down, then I took my test Fri and passed with only one minor error!

I only have a little bike but I'm fairly strong because of kickboxing and things. I chose to ride because my cars were costing me too much! I ride a Honda NS125R, which looks ilke a tiny sports bike with fairings and things. It's very red!

I'd love to have a Harley V-Rod but at the moment I'd settle for something around 32bhp. My Dad has a yamaha 400 that is only 31bhp but won't let me have it for love nor money!! I can't get my fiance to ride on the back either, so taking my test seems a bit pointless to me!

Anyway, I love riding, and I seem to get more respect withouth the L plates on! Maybe I'll get a Harley when I'm at goal!!!

Hi Joanne and 2frustrated and thehopefulcry2

2frustrated, congrats on passing your test!! I have read of the UK's policies on bikes...do you think it keeps accidents down? Now I feel oh-so-lucky at being able to learn on my 600cc bike. Do you have any pics of your zippy NS125R?

Joanne, the toy runs are fun, and a nice thing to do for the community, aren't they. I've heard of the Street Vibrations in Reno, sounds great. I guess I haven't seen what your husband has ( ) but do my best to minimize risks. Snowmachining sounds like the sensible thing for motorcycle lovers to do in winter! I have to make friends with someone around here who has one

I don't think it will keep accidents down because you can ride a 50cc at 16yrs old without knowing anything about the highway code, and you can stay ignorant for about 2 years just riding on your CBT certificate! They should make you sit a theory test before you can do a CBT, but if the young lads want to go about killing themselves by riding like maniacs then who am I to worry, so long as they don't ride into me!

A young 17 yr old lad hit a pedestrian in the next village and must have braked to harshly with his front breaks, co s he went over his handle bars, landed on his head and died. The pedestrian only had a few minor head injuries.

I don't think anything will make riding safer, so matter how many laws and rules you want to impose, apart from experience. I learn somethign new every day, and every day someone tries to wipe me out!

Hey Everyone!

I know this is kind of an old thread, but I just happened to see it today. I am learning to ride...my husband is teaching me. We bought me a 1985 Honda Rebel 250 in October and I have been around on it a few times. I am 28 and had never been on the back of one until this past summer. In May my then -fiance took me for a test drive on a Harley and I loved it. We didnt get that particular bike, but we did get a '03 Harley Softtail at the end of June after our wedding. I am so in love with riding! I can't wait for the weather to be nicer and get back on the bike. I am hoping to practice some more and take the MSF class this summer or next fall, but I want to lose some weight before I do that. I want to lose weight before I even get on the back of our bike! Take care everyone!

Hi everyone,

I am new here and I LOVE motorcycles. I love to ride. I belong to a Christian Motorcycle group called Hogs In Ministry (HIM). I could take off some days and ride all day (if the snow would ever melt!!)
