Favorite Perfume?

Ladies, I'm burned out on the same fragrances and looking for something different. Believe it or not I get TONS of compliments on my Britney Spears Fantasy perfume (people usually say "really!?" when I tell them what it is) but I don't mind spending more if it's a really good fragrance. I used to get D&G Light Blue which definitely isn't cheap. I love fruity or citrus, but hate floral. Floral gives me migraines/nausea. Victoria's Secret perfumes are nice but don't seem to last, same experience with Ed Hardy. :/

I love my Britney but I'm bored..

Suggestions?

projectjudi 05-04-2014 07:44 PM

I love most Estee Lauder products. I have Beautiful and White Linen.
I also love Shalimar but most people don't

CanadianCutie 05-04-2014 11:04 PM

My favorites as far as higher end brands are La Vie Est Belle, Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely, and Angel. I do like some of the classic scents like Chanel Number 5 and Red Door, though Red Door is a very strong scent. What I find myself wearing most often lately though is the Chocomania scent by The Body Shop, or a mix of Dark Amber and Warm Sugar Vanilla by Bath and Body Works. I get migraines, and some of Bath and Body Works scents affect me, but not these two, only the really sweet ones do. I also like the scent of the Cashmere Glow scent from Bath and Body Works, but have only used the triple moisture body cream, not the spray.

Arctic Mama 05-04-2014 11:36 PM

Well I've been a member of the site, Perfume of Life, for over a decade. I'm a perfume addict, and was devastated when they seemed to bother me in my first pregnancy. I recently discovered that the location of application makes the difference between migraine/nausea and comfort, so that has helped immensely.

My favorite perfume is Chanel 22. I love Le Baiser du Dragon by Cartier as well, and my newest fave is Versilia Vintage Boise. But truly, I have quite the collection and almost all are faves in one way or another.

ETA: this is the review for Versilia. Absolutely lovely perfume!

Escada Pacific Paradise! It's one of my favorites, and from the name I think you can get the gist of what it will smell like. :) Some recent favorites are Versace Yellow Diamond, and Giorgio Armani Acoua di Gioia.

maddierep 05-05-2014 02:15 AM

i know - i kinda liked the britney one too (surprisingly!)

My all time favourite is an old one (so you have to look for it) - is crystal noir by versace

I also really like burberry. They suit me really well.

Palestrina 05-05-2014 07:21 AM

I'll never understand perfume. It literally makes me sick to smell it, if I'm sitting next to someone wearing perfume I will move. If someone passes me on the street wearing perfume I will literally stop until they have moved far enough away from me so that I don't have to smell it. It's hard to understand why people wear it and what I can do to stop getting sick, I feel so violated when I smell perfume. I don't seem to have a problem with lotions or shampoo, but I think I'm allergic to perfume.

Psychic 05-05-2014 07:33 AM

Most perfumes give me headaches, but there are a few that I like. I like food scents (caramel, cotton candy, vanilla, etc.). I tend to stick with Bath & Body Works perfumes. I love Vanilla Bean Noel.

However, Love Spell & Pink With a Splash from Victoria Secret smell pretty good. I also like Avril Lavigne's Black Star perfume.

If you're looking for something more unique, I suggest checking out Demeter Fragrances. They have some very interesting scents.

Paulitens 05-05-2014 09:04 AM

Halloween, by Jesús del Pozo. I looooove that perfume!

katerina11 05-05-2014 09:41 AM

i wish i could help. i love perfumes! but i am mostly addicted to white floral scents, and you said no florals.

the only one i really enjoy that is not floral in nature is lolita lempicka. you might try that and see what you think.

http://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/L...fum-11909.html

if you want to *try* a white floral, the jennifer aniston fragrance is a beachy lovely scent. fracas is ahhhhmazing, and bvlgari amethyst and the bvlgari green jade are really nice.

If you can smell it heavily on someone outside then they're wearing WAY too much. It's meant to be subtle. I can't stand heavy florals. IMO those are nauseating.

Some people overload on cheap perfume (some to cover the smell of ciggs) and it can be a nasty experience. There's a girl at the gym that wears so much cheap spray that I can tell which bathroom stall she was in long after she was back out on the machines. I agree that it's gross but I wouldn't call it a violating experience. If you're allergic I'm sorry, us subtle perfume users aren't out to be a-holes I promise. You thought it was strange that I felt violated at the GYN so I guess we agree to disagree.

I love perfume. I wear it almost everywhere and get lots of compliments. I think it also hugely depends on body chemistry. A scent might smell great on one person, and bad on another.

novangel 05-05-2014 10:11 AM

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. I will definitely check some of these out. :)

Maddie, I do remember crystal noir by versace. Very nice.

Remember Calvin Klein Obsession? I loved that one. I wouldn't wear it again but just saying.

RiotGirl, Pacific Paradise sounds right up my alley. ;)

Arctic, thanks for the review I will check that one out for sure. Sounds like you really know your stuff when it comes to perfume.

Canadian, I LOVE B&BW (I'm going there today for candles and hand soaps) but their perfumes last literally 10 minutes. Chanel 5 is a great classic but prefer COCO, Red Door is NOOOO...

I adore Le Baiser du Dragon! I will have to check out Versilia Vintage Boise...it sounds fantastic.

I love scents that are spicy, musky, and woodsy. I'm completely infatuated with patchouli. My top three favorite perfumes: Karma (by Lush)*, Jungle L'Elephant (by Kenzo), and Le Baiser du Dragon (by Cartier).

*Unfortunately, Lush recently changed the Karma perfume from a solid to a spray and it's just not the same.

shea 05-05-2014 03:00 PM

I just finished a bottle of Water Lily body oil by Osmia Organics. I really liked it though different than scents I usually go for. The scent was light but lasted all day. You put it on while still wet from shower and it sank right in. I'm thinking of ordering the floral one next.
I also like to add drops of essential oil to coconut oil. Would love to get some lemon verbena essential oil . This has to be one of my favorite scents ever. I usually find it in soap or lotion form.
I have tried samples of Versace Bright Crystal and Prada D'iris and liked them both.
Years ago wore Clarins Tranquility and would get compliments on it. Oh and Tocca had a blood orange body lotion that I loved.

xopeaceandlovexo 05-05-2014 04:08 PM

One of my favorites is love spell at Victoria secret =)
The one I like that is a bit more pricey is light blue by dolce and gabbana!!

Diana3271 05-06-2014 09:21 AM

I also love fragrances and wear them daily. This weekend I received a test strip in the Ulta flyer for Ralph Lauren's Midnight Romance. I thought it smelled pretty good and gave it to DH to smell. He loved the way it smelled, the name and even said that it would be perfect on me. I bought it in the roller ball size so I could give it a try for a while. I have a whole counter of perfumes and fragrances and won't allow myself to buy any more full size bottles, until I make a dent it what I have. Here's a description of Midnight Romance: http://www.sephora.com/midnight-roma...?skuId=1606987

ETA: I also bought a roller ball of Skin from Clean last month. Every time I wear it DH comments "hmm, you have that sweet perfume on". That's a good comment from DH since he never comments on anything like that out of the blue. To me it smells like musk but it must smell differently when mixed with my chemistry. DH seems to like this one on me, too. http://www.sephora.com/skin-P294713?skuId=1367671

canadjineh 05-06-2014 12:41 PM

I miss YSL Rive Gauche, can't seem to find it anymore. I hate that there is always a 'flavour of the month' coming out and they are mothballing the good old ones. I don't wear perfume out anywhere as I have friends and know others who are very sensitive to fragrance chemicals - whether they can smell them or not. All of our doc and dentist offices, etc are scent free zones as are the hospitals. Even the change room at the gyms & pool are that way.
I like to wear men's cologne as I just am attracted to the smell of it and I wear scent for me, mainly. My hubby likes it too, though. My fave men's are Davidoff Cool Water, and Versace for men, and Givenchy Xeryus. :flow1:

It's always jarring when someone brings up an old thread to illustrate something about my personality yet don't like. It feels like keeping tabs. Anyway the gyno thread I believe from what I remember that you explained clearly why your past might have something to do with your discomfort and I don't think I was unsympathetic to that. I do believe I encouraged you to find someone you'd be more comfortable with. My initial reaction to what you described happened in your appointment sounded like a typical exam. Please dont take that to heart.

Violation, yes that's what comes to mind when the air I'm breathing suddenly makes me choke. It's not a matter of like or dislike because the smell is ok buy the choking is not iykwim. Whether the smell is pleasant or not I react to it the same way as if I smelled a skunk or a fart or a particularly unclean public restroom. I have the same reaction of "omg let me out!" That's the nature of all smells, they incite a strong reaction. For every compliment you receive there is another person who is trying not to barf but won't say so.

Desiderata 05-06-2014 02:00 PM

For me, almost all synthetic perfumes smell alike - and the smell is horrid. I get the idea of different "notes" and all, but all I smell is acrid and rank chemicals. Maybe slightly different flavors of the same synthetic bad odor, at best. Yes, even "high-end" brands.

So, understandably, I've never really understood the allure of perfumes. I get that most other people aren't as sensitive and don't experience the same scents as olfactory assault... though I also think that regular exposure to strong scents warps the senses... (I'm leery of even 'light' applications of the stuff - I think it's not uncommon for people's sense of scent to become dulled, which leads to heavier usage of perfumes...)

I just don't get it. :?: With just a modicum of hygiene, people don't smell bad. And human body odor is far less offensive than overpowering perfumes. (ymmv, of course...)

nonameslob 05-06-2014 02:13 PM

My favorite non-floral perfume (for those who like florals, Estee Lauder Pleasures!!!!) is Lush's solid The Smell of Freedom perfume. It's citrusy and reminds me of summer all year long. It doesn't last as long as other perfumes, but I definitely can still smell it on my wrist at the end of the day. I like the solid perfume because it's very packable - as long as it's not a hot summer day.

Description from the website: "Fire Tree, the first scent, is a citrus, herbal and woody fragrance inspired by an Australian aboriginal artist. Old Delhi Station blends ginger, clove and black pepper and Oudh Heart, with its powdery and woody scent uses materials familiar to Arab perfumery."

Desiderata - for me, scent evokes emotion. It's not about smelling good, but FEELING good. Like with the aforementioned perfume, putting it on makes me smile and think of a beautiful summer day.

Samantha18 05-06-2014 05:24 PM

I love Vera Wang Princess and on the cheaper end, Paris Hilton Heiress. They both smell feminine and light, and they're the perfumes I seem to get the most compliments on, even by guys (especially the Vera Wang Princess perfume)! I also like Japanese Cherry Blossom from Bath & Body works.

shea 05-06-2014 05:36 PM

@ nonameslob. I second that on how scent makes you feel. I wore peppermint oil today And it makes me feel uplifted. Also reminds me of my mom years ago i wore an origins body lotion that smelled like mint. Every time i wore it she would laugh and say i smelled like a York Peppermint Patty. Though after running errands on foot like today I like to think I smell like mint not sweat.

Scarlett 05-06-2014 08:12 PM

I like lighter floral and/or musky scents.

My absolute favorite is Romance by Ralph Lauren, I can't wait to buy the new version midnight romance. I smelled a magazine sample and almost died. Maybe as a treat for finishing this semester ;)

For a cheaper scent I love Faith Hill's Parfumus. I almost always get complements when I wear it. Her True scent is nice too, but I prefer Parfumus.

I've had Princess in the past, it does smell great! I'll have to check out Heiress.

Arctic Mama 05-07-2014 03:47 AM

Yes, get your nose on as many as possible. I've had some surprise favorites, and ones I would have sworn I'd love based on the notes, but hated on me or didn't feel were well balanced.

You don't need to get it. If you don't like it, don't wear it. I'm not the thread police but can understand negative replies had I asked the general question, "do you like perfume?" but all I asked for is suggestions on people's favorite fragrances. I, and many others love perfume because it provokes happy thoughts and even memories...

Desiderata 05-07-2014 10:48 AM

It's not really as simple as not wearing it. Of course it's everyone's personal choice, but I think some people don't realize how much that choice can impact everyone else they cross paths with - even when they think "Oh, I'm not that person, I don't drench myself in it." Wannabeskinny did have a good point that there are those of us out there who find the scents horrid and offensive and are unlikely to come out directly and say "Hey, your grooming choice is actually making me feel seriously unwell." It's just another side of things to consider. :)

nonameslob 05-07-2014 10:53 AM

Desiderata In many countries, even use of deodorant and scented shampoos would make people feel sick. I've heard for members of the Peace Corps, for example, they suggest they learn to not use products like that.

But I think it's hard to expect people to change their habits when it's a serious minority of people who have issues with perfumes in modern countries (unless you're going to a doctor's office, hospital, or another setting where you know you will be very close to strangers and they can't get up to move away from you, like a symphony for example - that's common courtesy).

Miss V 05-07-2014 08:43 PM

Light blue - d&g
Princess - Vera Wang
Very sexy- victoria secret

Those are the three scents that I rotate. Usually just wear bath and body works body sprays if I'm just hanging out around the house or family. Lol

JuvenileNarcissist 05-07-2014 09:27 PM

I like Relax by Lollia. It's a nice spring/summer scent. It says it's a lavender and honey. I don't usually like the smell of lavender, but this works really well. Comes in a great hand creme too.

doingmybest 05-07-2014 09:36 PM

I like Youth Dew by Este Lauder. I would try other perfumes and that was always my favorite. It was also the perfume my mother wore, so it does bring up some good memories.

I am assuming they still sell it because it has been popular for a very long time. I had to stop wearing it because my DH absolutely hates all perfume. I really miss wearing perfume but a lot of places in my area (gym, doctor's office, my office, etc.) ask that people not wear any scents. I have even been invited to parties where the hostess requests that no one wear perfume or cologne. I am glad to see that people are still wearing fragrances, as long as they aren't too strong.

Arctic Mama 05-07-2014 09:48 PM

Rave! I have a rave! I forgot to mention this before, but a company called Olfactif provides samples each month for a recurring small fee, along with a coupon for a full bottle each month. I have LOVED the fragrances they've been sending and they're ones I'd never get to smell, otherwise.

It is a treat to open each month (beautiful packaging) and there has only been one fragrance so far I haven't loved. You can get it month by month but the year subscription is the cheapest overall.

I just got May's box and it is DIVINE.
http://www.olfactif.com

For trying to find new fragrances a recurring sample club is the way to go.

Yes - consider countries like the UAE, Morocco, and Dubai have fragrance as part of the fabric of their culture, with oudh and heavy oils being eponymous. There are both sides of the spectrum to consider. The application matters very much.

I gave up smoking a few years ago, there's my contribution to not affecting others around me. I'm keeping the perfume. Sorry! :p

littleflip66 05-08-2014 01:20 AM

I've actually been using the BCBG Max Azria perfume lately. I'm pretty sure it's discontinued, but it can be found for super cheap on Amazon. I love fruity and citrusy smells too, and this one is right up that alley.

krampus 05-09-2014 09:13 AM

Patchouli and nag champa :P but I'm not much for scented products nowadays. Even a little can be overpowering in an enclosed environment. There's nothing like enduring a plane or bus ride with someone who is treating an eau de parfum like it's a light body mist.

I used to like perfumes quite a lot - my favorites were Euphoria by CK and Light Blue from D&G.

Silverfire 05-09-2014 09:59 AM

DKNY - Be Delicious - my favorite
Intimately Beckham - kinda floral-y but not too much I think, some vanilla in there too. Give it a whiff!
I also really like Gwen Stefani's Harajuku lovers line

I'm not even sure why the "I get a headache when people wear perfume" conversation is happening here!? How is that useful to the OP? Obviously she wears perfume and wants to continue to do so. This is the internet. You can't smell us here. Take your complaints elsewhere.
