MRI and titanium screws?

  • I have 3 titanium screws in my left elbow and need to have an MRI of my left foot. Anyone have any experience with metal body parts and MRI? Did it mess up the MRI? Were you told to get a CT scan instead? I dread the CT scan because they inject you and give you that stuff that makes you feel like you are going to pee. I hope the MRI is okay and there is no issue....
  • Why not call the clinic/hospital and ask them?

I'm pretty sure they can do the MRI while keeping your arm out of the machine. But call and ask. You have a right to the information that will calm your worries. Go get it!
  • I am sure they can work around that. I have MRI's quite often and they always want me to raise both arms over my head, I can't do that with my left arm because of an injury. I tell them and they just say OK, leave both arms at your side.
Just let them know, either call before as DietVet suggests or tell them before you get on the table.
  • Thanks girls. I know in the past when I've been in that facility and asked one of the xray techs they said they didn't know - good idea to just call ahead - and didn't know that I could maybe leave one arm out of the machine. Good tips, thanks!!!

Ask them to find out. You are entitled to know this stuff.
  • Titanium is not magnetic, that's why they use it in medical screws and plates.

And if it was magnetic, just leaving your arm out of the machine wouldn't work - you'd have to leave your arm out of the ROOM.

    Good trick !!
  • I don't think it is possible to leave your arm out of the machine. The table is pretty narrow and just wide enough to move in and out of the machine.
In my case I couldn't lay in the position they requested but they were ok if I laid another way.
The best person to ask is the one doing the scan, but you will already have the injection by the time you see him/her.
    Good luck !
