Does anyone have bunions or suffer from pain stemming from your bunions? I had bunion surgery about 20 years ago on my right foot. Now my bunion on my left foot is starting to hurt. I hope that I don't have to have bunion surgery. I guess I should have had the surgery done on both feet when I did it the first time.

Have you tried the Footsmart catalog? I don't have bunions, but they have awesome comfortable shoes, and lots of foot care items specific to just about any problem your feet can have. Might be worth a look - having ouchy feet really puts a cramp in your day!

Haven't tried them but will give it a try. The pain is unbearable at times.

My mom has really bad bunions. She was considering surgery years ago, but kept putting it off. Then she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer so clearly bunion surgery was on hold while she had treatment for her cancer. Then, just when she was finishing chemo, she was diagnosed with a really bad blood clot. It was actually discovered during a follow-up CT scan, and was probably cancer-related. They had a terrible time regulating her prothrombin time and she was in the hospital - feeling relatively well, but stuck there because of the clot issues and bleeding time issues - for two weeks. Then she was on Coumadin for at least a year and couldn't have the surgery. And when she finally got around to going back to the podiatrist, he told her he thought that she was too old for the surgery.

So, she lives with them? It means she has really limited shoe choices and mostly wears tennis shoes, but she still plays tennis, walks the dog, and does many of the things she likes to do, just with aching feet.

I have the same foot-shape that she does, so I expect to have similar foot issues! I am careful about shoes, though, so maybe that will help me avoid them. I really hope that your foot pain goes away! I developed pain at a certain weird interior foot joint last year (while walking around for long distances on vacation! It was so nagging and bothersome). I think at the joint of the talar and navicular bones or the navicular and first... metatarsal?

But it went away after a few months. Hopefully yours will too. Have you talked to your doctor about custom orthotics? My mom uses those and I think they can help with bunion pain.

I inherited my bunions from my grandmother. I had them on both feet but I had bunion surgery on my right foot many, many years ago. That was THE best decision I EVER made. The pain at that time was so bad, that if my bed sheets touched my bunion, it would hurt. That's how bad it was. I had outpatient surgery. It lasted for a few hours. I was back home the same day. The recovery time was a few weeks. The pain was soooooooooo bad. I slept on my couch for about a month with my dog right on the side of me (smile). I have never had a problem with that foot again once they removed some of the bone. I"m not looking forward to another bunion surgery but if that is what I need, then I will have it done. It is sooooooooooo worth it!

I haven't talked to a doctor yet. I think if it gets worse, I will just see an orthopedic doctor and schedule the surgery. I don't want the pain to get too bad and I can't walk. Since I already know what to expect, I'm gonna git er done.

Some people have no control of bunions.

I had bunion surgery when i was still in high school! some people have no control for it. I had it done on my left foot. Have you tried getting like a bunion bandage? (im describing it horribly.. lol) I'll link you

How did your surgery go? Any problems after that?

The way my feet (and my mother's feet) are shaped, our big toes are naturally turned inward even at a neutral stance. That gradually worsens over time. Bunion correctors will not change my underlying anatomy.

LAGreeneyes - wow, that sounds really miserable. Okay, I don't think my mom's bunions were ever that bad. I am going to keep your testimonial in mind if I am ever in need of/wavering on the surgery. I think my mom was horrified by the nature of the surgery when she was considering it before her cancer diagnosis and delayed it.

My surgery went well, although the scar left is pretty big, i don't mind. (mainly my fault, i wasn't too diligent with applying vitamin E or anything to prevent scarring)
Before getting the bunion surgery, walking all day on my foot hurt really bad and my bunion would be all red and swollen (very icky for a high school girl )
Have you been to the podiatrist lately? maybe just changing your shoes can make a huge difference. I don't have a problem with shoes, but wearing flats make my feet hurt after a long time and I just got dr. scholl's shoe insert for a new pair of sandals i got- better to be safe than sorry since i'll be on my feet alot next week.

I agree with your statement but the important factor here is "predisposes"... it does not mean that it cannot be counteracted and corrected otherwise we would still be in the Dark Ages!
The link that was given by DailyStruggle is very much as I described and therefore helps with preventing bunions to become acute.
Even being born with somewhat protruding joints does not mean you have no control over the situation. Anything that will help the joints to remain as "normal" as possible is worthwhile. Why wait till they become swollen and painful before taking action. Wearing something like the adverrtised strap to control things before any protrusion become painful is the best way to go, methinks!
