Thanks for the clarification, midwife. That's what I had thought you were saying, but I just wanted to make sure.
I might as well give my opinion while I'm here. I do *not* consider WLS to be an "easy way out" nor a cure-all. I do tend to be of the opinion that it is a radical enough procedure that it should be used only as a last resort after more traditional methods of weight loss have been exhausted. I am not cynical enough to think that doctors are recommending it as a way to make more money. However, I think that the vast majority of doctors are ignorant about successful weight loss and maintenance, and I think there are many surgical candidates who could lose and maintain the weight by more traditional methods if they weren't sorting through so much horrible, if well-intentioned, diet advice.
I am a person for whom 9 out of 10 doctors probably would have thought that WLS was the only route to permanent weight loss. After yo-yo dieting for most of my life, I finally sorted through which things worked and which things didn't work for me, and I had to be ornery enough to decide that some of the conventional wisdom simply didn't apply to me. I'm cautiously optimistic that I have the tools to take me into maintenance. And I didn't have to have major surgery to do it.
