I love Pride and Prejudice now but I read the book before I ever saw any of the dramatisations and I found it hard going at first.

Then I saw the BBC Colin Firth mini-series and loved it so much I went back and re-read the book. It's the kind of book where you see a lot more every time you read it.

Instead of looking at it as ridiculous dialogue, try to realise that that is really the way they spoke and acted - she isn't trying to re-creqate anything, she lived in that era, and that was normal for her.

If you can, try to watch the BBC mini series, but not the film version as that was very inferior IMHO.

I've since read all of Jane Austen's books and mostly enjoyed them although some of the world she portrays is so alien to me it's hard to understand exactly what is going on at times.

I have a few books going, I have the kindle app on my ipod touch. It's so neat to have a bunch of books right there with me when I'm on the treadmill. I get bored really easily. LOL

Books I'm reading right now: A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. They are making a new HBO series with this book.
The Language of Miracles by Amelia Kinkade. It's a pet psychic book.
I'm re-reading the Sookie Stackhouse series, starting with Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris.

I know it is how they spoke and acted at the time, but it was still so tedious. I think that's why I gave up on it.

Ditto. I actually enjoy quite a number of the movies upon which her books are based, but I can't stomach the novels themselves.

That's so funny that you mention that series. I just added it to Netflix a few days ago (it's on instant watch!) and it has made it MUCH easier to get through the book. I've been reading the book and watching the series after. It's made a world of difference- I'm actually getting really into the story now. I think adding faces to names, seeing the expressions and the setting helps a bunch. I'm on the 3rd of 5 episodes and I like how they follow the book so closely. A few details are cut out, but overall, it contains the same dialogue word-by-word. :)

I'm reading 'Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl'

I am reading "The Master and Margarita" and "Stiff" by Mary Roach. I'm a scientist, so I love Mary Roach. She gets technical details right without being boring. "The Master and Margarita" is something new for me, and I've just started it. Next up is Cormack McCarthy's "The Road".

As for the Sookie novels, I liked the first few, and I listened to them while running. I got a little tired of Sookie. I do like True Blood so far. I've just started season 2. I'm loving this thread!

I just finished Twelve Sharp by Janet Evanovich. I book blog, so I usually have a couple things I'm reading at one time- right now I'm still reading Dexter is Delicious by Jeff Lindsey, Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larson, and sWitch by Scott Norton.

I'm enjoying the Dexter book, but I totally agree with an earlier poster that the 3rd book went off the rails, but the new one is great so far!

Glory, after reading The Other Boleyn Girl, I picked up a couple more and couldn't stand them! I've given up on her.

I've read almost all her other books and only like 2 others besides OBG I like. One was the Constant Princess- that was a very good one about Katherine of Aragon, and the other pretty good one was The Boleyn Inheritance, about Anne of Cleves and the 2nd Queen Katherine. The others like the queen's fool haven't been too good. I'm considering The Red Queen but not yet.

I'm currently reading the outlander series by Diana Galbadon- I'm on the last book and overall it's pretty good, the first few books were better cuz at this point I'm starting to feel like "um okay is this gonna end?" The author keeps putting more and more elements into the book and it can get confusing if you don't pay attention.
