Recipe Book for Singles?

  • Hi, Chicks!

I'm currently a college student stuck in the dorms and on a cafeteria plan.

Starting this coming summer, however, I am transferring schools and will be acquiring my own housing with my own oven, fridge, and microwave! I'm extremely excited about this because I will finally be able to COOK again (I love to cook and bake) and I will be much more in control over my daily menu options.

However, this will be my first experience cooking for one. I'm used to making large batches for my family with the intent to leave at least a few days worth of leftovers.

Are there any other chicks out there living singly? Do you happen to have a recommendation for a recipe book that is geared towards single-living? I would really appreciate recipes that are not only on the small-portion scale, but also are healthy and suited for a low budget (I'm hoping to spend only $70 on food a week, at maximum.)

If you are not aware of any book recommendation, perhaps you have a particular website or your own ideas that you would be willing to share?

Thank you, everyone! I am so excited!
  • I don't know of a cookbook for singles, but I know there are some for couples.

I'm not good at cooking small batches either. I normally divide left-overs up into individual serving size dishes and then store them in the fridge or freezer. I take the left-overs to work with me so I don't have to eat out.

I've also subscribed to e-mealz. They give weekly meal plans for 5 days (I suscribe to the 2 person low-fat) and the necessary shopping list. Right now, I'm just stocking up on the meal plans for future use. The subscription is reasonably priced ($15/3 months).
  • Go to Amazon and search for cooking for one. It will give you a lot of books to choose from. You can buy used copies that are in good shape to save some extra cash
  • I use the website recipezaar.com and I love it. not only can you adjust the recipe based on how many servings you want to make, but you can put in whatever you're looking for and find the highest rated version of it- the tried and tested favorite. i love it.
plus, users make up cookbooks and you can go into cook books and do a search for "cooking for one" or "healthy recipes" or whatever and find someone's collection. very cool.
  • Look into the Hungry Girl books. Almost all the recipes are meant for one. I will say her recipes are not for everyone, and some recipes are better than others. You can check out her website just to get an idea of the kinds of recipes that are in her books and try some out for free!
  • I love the Hungry Girl books. I love her positive e-mails and the variety of food in the cook books. She's got a fan here!!
