Negative side effects of weight loss
So, I'm new here! Actually I've just been lurking for months now. It's motivating to read about everyone's progress. Anyway, I had a funny negative side effect of weight loss and I thought it would be fun to share.
So, I've lost almost 60 pounds now. (from 196 down to 136) I noticed the other day that my armpit has become so concave that I had been missing a patch of hair while shaving for probably 2 weeks by the looks of things! I'm just glad it's winter, so nobody noticed since I've been wearing long sleeves. (not even my husband!) Anyone else have a negative side effect of weight loss or funny story? |
Congrats on your weight loss! Concave armpits would be my last expectation from losing weight!
Just for fun...only shave one for a while and see how long it takes hubby to notice :D |

Another totally concave armpit person here. I believe it's due to the added muscle though and the shape I've taken on due to strength training.
I actually need help shaving in the summer time. In the winter I'm not as picky as no one much sees, but in the summer in a bathing suit... It's impossible to get in there. I need to kind of stretch out my arm pit with one hand and shave with the other. very interesting. The only other negative side affect is that I'm always cold. I have a huge collection of sweaters. I'm not sure why I even bother to buy pretty blouses because I have to always cover them up. In the summer time, I never, ever leave my house without a sweater, unless I am walking and know I will be no where indoors. But I guess it's lots better than being red faced and sweating all the time! |
None yet! :D But this should be a fun read.
|
I am always cold now too. It has made for a miserable winter, and that's saying something considering I'm from Texas! I am always in a jacket or wrapped up in a sweater, even on mild days. I am hoping this is a temporary thing and my internal thermometer gets back to normal soon.
|
I had a spot I was missing in one of my armpits also.
Glad to know I'm not alone in this affliction :) Coldness, too. And hubby's been asking me if I'm having an affair-????? (no, I'm not, btw) |
OMG, I was going to ask this question for months now, but never could think of the right word to describe the phenomenon. ;) Yes, the pits are so deep you have to pull the muscle and skin tissue tight to get down in there. I never shave my pits in the shower anymore, I shave at the sink, using my hanging magnifying makeup mirror so I can see what the heck I am doing.
Oh, by the way, I tried using my sons electric razor once, (shhhh, don't tell him or he'd freak out....OUCH, doesn't work at ALL. ) |
Count me in on the concave armpit train! It's even trickier because I can't see that close up without my cheater glasses. I thought I was the only one. I was really cold too but in the last week or so I feel like my body is adjusting more easily to the winter cold. That doesn't mean that I'm not craving some serious heat with humidity though. I cannot wait for Summer to get here!
|
haha this is so funny!!! LMAO @ armpits... I have worn the same anklet for years... it used to be pretty tight.... well, as it has gotten much looser, I have noticed that I have been shaving around it for a while! :o massive affro on the ankle... its like another anklet in itself. :D
|
hahahaha! i'm a member of the concave armpit phenomenon as well! so funny to see i'm not the only one. i wonder if all skinny people have this issue or if it is specific to the once-plump, now-shrunken armpit? :P haha

1. I will definitely have to agree with the armpit thing! No matter how much stretching of the skin I do, I can't get to a certain patch of hair. I have resorted to using Nair type products just for those particular spots. Oi!
2. Also, definitely the cold. My roommates keep the apartment at 68 degrees year round, and while this may not sound too terrible, I'M ALWAYS FREEZING! I walk around the apartment in layers and slippers and sometimes with a blanket wrapped around me. My hands are always freezing, and every time they get wet it takes about an hour for them to warm up again (i.e. every time I use the restroom and wash my hands). So basically I'm not allowed to touch people anymore because it's like ice. 3. My BUTT HURTS! I have to always sit on some type of cushion, and sometimes both a cushion AND a pillow. I can't comfortably do long car rides anymore. When I sit on a weight bench at the gym, I leave 2 sharp indents instead of a normal butt-print. I miss my butt. Also, this makes it hard to shop for underwear because it is always all baggy around my butt now. 4. Ok, I don't know if anybody can relate to this at all, but it is very hard for me to find a comfortable position to sleep in at night now. My boobs are all loose skin now, and I sleep on my stomach, so I often have to keep adjusting them because the skin folds over on itself and pinches and makes me uncomfortable. And then there's my hip bones, I have to adjust my pajama bottoms and underwear so that my hips don't overlap with any of the bands, because I will really feel it. I also have to avoid springs if it is not a great mattress, I can feel them on my hips and ribs. 5. I have always been super ticklish, but now that my extra fat padding is gone, it is INSANE how sensitive I am! |

OMG--same thing happening with MY pits! ARRGH.
|
Oh yes, to the armpits, the incredible sensitivity to the cold, and the sore butt. I don't miss my fat, but holy cow, sitting in the bathtub or on a hard chair can be really uncomfortable.
|
Add me to the club: cold, butt soreness, and sometimes sleep discomfort. Thankfully I still have some padding but it's on its way out!
No armpit problems... yet. :crossed: |
I have to agree with the constantly being cold thing and the worst part is that everyone around me finds it really funny. When I was heavy, I was never cold, I always wanted the windows open and moaned when anyone tried to put the heating on.
Since we moved into this (very old) house my partner has been telling me that we needed a new boiler because the old one wasn't powerful enough but I dismissed the idea out of hand. Now I know that we need a new boiler but it's not practical to get one before the summer and I'm freezing. The other negative that I've just remembered and this might be unique to me is that once I got down to 21% body fat I had the longest period ever, it went on for about 25 days, I'd lie in bed every morning before I got up praying that it would be finished when I got up. |
I also have this issue where, if I lie on my side in bed with my legs stacked, the sides of my knee bones grate together unpleasantly.
And here's a non-physical negative effect of losing weight: Some of my fat friends (maybe I should say "acquaintances") aren't as comfortable around me anymore. Unwelcome male attention. (I mean, from unwelcome males -- I don't mind attention from the welcome ones.) I preferred being invisible to some guys. |
I hate that my rings are all too big now. Who knew that you could lose so much weight in your fingers?
I also noticed the unwelcome male attention but it has been really weird because it has all been from guy friends I have known for years. It's been making for some pretty strange saturday nights! I don't have the cold problem yet, I am always hot and that hasn't changed! |
This is so weird to read about. I never thought about that before. That sounds like it sucks! Better than being chunky, but still. I can't wait to complain about this with you guys. :D

My husband lost a lot of weight too and last anniversary we bought each other new, simple wedding bands. It's been great wearing a wedding ring again! |
Oh dear, I'm always cold and my butt always hurts NOW, can't imagine it getting worse! I still have a long way to go til goal, but I'm very close to not being able to wear my ring anymore. It just barely fits. I'm torn on getting it sized because it was so inexpensive ($8 in USVI) that it's seems like it's not worth it, but I really like the ring!
I'm really excited about the propect of concave armpits. Mine are currently quite convex, and I'm always so self-conscious about them! |
Lol I love it, I'm glad I'm not the only one with concave pits! I was so sure I was getting all the hair when I shaved in the shower but there was a small patch every time. I guess I'm gonna have to start shaving in the mirror when it comes tank top time!
I'm also having ring size issues. I'm only halfway to goal but my ring is already starting to feel loose and it's a beautiful diamond ring I got for graduation from my grandmother so I'll be getting it sized soon. Luckily, though, I should be to my goal weight by the time my dbf and I get engaged/married so I shouldn't have to worry about that one! Oh and I'm always cold too but I was that way before I lost weight, go figure. |
I'm glad I'm not the only one with the armpit problem!
I also have a problem with being cold all the time. I go to bed with an electric blanket, wake up and immediately turn on the space heater in the bathroom while I get ready, get in my car and turn on butt warmers, get to work and turn on the space heater under my desk. AND I'm wearing tons and tons of layers during all of this AND I'm still cold. I literally started wearing long underwear 24/7 all the time because I was so cold! This is probably why my husband didn't notice the armpit hair!! He hasn't seen my skin very much (and when he has, I'm sure he's been distracted with other things :o) Something else I don't like about weight loss is that I HAVE to try on EVERYTHING when I go clothes shopping. My body has changed so much that I can't just look at something on a hanger and judge whether it is cut right for me or if I will like it. Now, I find myself buying completely different styles of clothes. |
I am also cold all of the time. I have 3 words for you...heated mattress pad. Ahhhhh.
On the armpit thing, today in the bath I did a bit of experimenting, as I miss a patch frequently too. I find that if you put your arm in a position like you're doing this tricep stretch: http://static-p4.fotolia.com/jpg/00/...Gi9RkC8wsB.jpg And you sort of stretch until your hand on the stretched arm is mid-upper-back...that concave part is almost flat and waaaay easier to access. I tried several positions, and this was the flattest/best angle for me to eliminate the concaveness and make it way easier. |

that made me laugh...a lot. |

I find to get the best, though by no means perfect shave by my lonesome, I kinda hold up my arm in the position that mandalinn posted but I take my thumb and and try to stretch out my underarm to stretch and flatten out the arm pit area. |
I love this thread about the pits - made me look at mine even though I am not at goal and what do you know they look flatter! So there is another thing to use as a NSV - flattening out and then having concave pits!!! ROFL!

Best. Thread. Ever.

I'M so there on the cold thing! I used to always be hot, now I'm always cold.
I've had to start wearing the majority of my rings on my middle finger and had to have my engagment/band sized do to a 5 1/4! I'm also getting frustrated with buying cloths and then they're too big or unflattering 4-8 weeks later - a good problem, but expensive. |
I employed Mandalinn's technique last night for my CAPS (Concave ArmPit Syndrome) and yes I think it worked. I was discussing this dilemma with DD22 who just laughed and laughed at me and our discussion. DD used to call her armpits "shoulder pits" when she was little because they were under her shoulders--cute!
I'm wondering if CAPS is a result of weight training? How many of us CAPS victims do weight/strength training? I too am having trouble with my rings. I need to have my wedding set resized, but am waiting until Spring because I think my weight will be more settled then, maybe? I too am wearing many of my rings on my first and middle fingers. I do have one really nice plain gold wedding band that I'm still able to wear because it's thicker but it's loose too. I had to stop wearing my wedding set with the diamonds because it fell off a couple of times--scary! |
I just have to say that this thread absolutely made my day... LOL!

As far as the rings. One day my ring literally fell off of my finger. I haven't worn my engagement ring in years, since I had sized it up to fit me when I gained so much weight. My wedding band though hadn't fit me in years as it was waaaay too small, so now I can finally wear it again. I love it and get a big kick out of that. |
I just checked and no, I don't have CAPS, but it is now officially on my list of goals, right up there with skinny jeans!
|
Oh my goodness....I still have a ways to go before I get to goal....and it ALREADY hurts me to sit on anything hard...Seriously...my butt is in serious pain, and then it falls asleep...
also I wear pajama pants a lot to bed...and I sleep on my side...and its been getting SO UNCOMFORTABLE because the band from the pajama pants will end up right at my hip bone and it digs in and hurts really bad...oh, and laying on my side on a hard surface is one of the most PAINFUL things ever...I'm gonna need like a super extra soft mattress for the rest of my life. lol |
I got a lot better on the sitting pain when I started hard core strengthening my rear end. After I got to goal, it was flat (like, pancake flat) and it hurt to sit. Now I've built up a nice muscle cushion, which both makes it rounder and more feminine looking, but also protects me from hurting when I sit.
Now, the hip bones are another issue. My hip bones are pokey and have a tendency to actually -hurt- my partner if we're not paying attention. |
This is soo funny! I can't wait until it happens to me!!
