What are you reading - March 2009

Wow - February is such a short month! Here is last month's thread if anyone wants to review:

http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=163288

I finished reading Still Alice and Wesley the Owl. They were both great. I'm not sure I'm a believer in animal telepathy or I have the fortitude to kill mice for my pet, but I really enjoyed the book about the owl.

missirishwoman 03-01-2009 11:30 AM

Im reading Angels In My Hair by Lorna Byrne...its very good....Im a firm beleiver in the angels....

Oh 2 be me 03-01-2009 11:35 AM

Sutter's Cross by W. Dale Cramer

LisaMarie71 03-01-2009 11:41 AM

I finished the fifth book in the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris and since I'm very into series lately, I started The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. I've seen these around and thought they didn't look like my cup of tea, but they're completely different from what I thought they would be. I love it! I really love the main character, Precious Ramotswe.

I'm also reading Unconditional Parenting by Alfie Kohn. I need to start thinking about how I will discipline my little boy in the future, and this book seems in line with my leanings toward attachment parenting.

Glory87 03-01-2009 11:46 AM

Hey Lisa - is that the first book in the Alexander McCall series? I keep meaning to give it a whirl.

winning the war 03-01-2009 01:01 PM

I'm just finishing Nothing to Lose by Lee Child. Got it from a co-worker. It's a pretty good read, but a little drawn out. Next up is a newer Stephen King. I'll let you know how it goes! Great thread! I never knew it existed. Thanks!!

Jenny :o)

I'm still on Stone Cold but should be done with it in a couple of days. After that I think I'll read The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Glory87 03-01-2009 01:50 PM

I loaded The Help onto my Sony Reader! Maybe I'll read that one next too :)

Yes, it's the first one. I just finished it and immediately started the second one, Tears of the Giraffe. I got them both from the library in case I liked the first one. I believe there are eight or nine so far. I really enjoyed the first one! Apparently they've made a movie or miniseries or something and Jill Scott plays the main character.

jtammy 03-01-2009 05:49 PM

I love the #1 Ladies Detective Agency! I had no idea it has been made into a miniseries. I'll have to look for that.

sunspell 03-01-2009 06:30 PM

The Rise of Silas Lapham... ahhhhhh 19th century american lit.

PearFreak 03-01-2009 09:22 PM

Just started The Shopoholic series. So far so good... a light funny read. I've got her whole series. They came in all at once from the library.

I'm still plodding through Roger Zelazny's Amber series- I'm on Trumps of Doom and it's finally starting to get really good.

FrouFrou 03-02-2009 11:18 AM

Well, I finally finished Love Walked In and while it annoyed me...I think I HAVE to read the next one, lmao.

Been working on Three Dollars by Elliot Perlman...another annoying book, lol. So thought I would go between that and Swapping Lives by Jane Green...maybe it will help me get Three Dollars read.

Omg..thats my 2nd fave series!!! I loveeeeee those books (hence the s/n, lol). I REFUSE to watch the movie though, they changed so much. It's so disappointing.

As for me, I just started reading From Dead To Worse by Charlaine Harris.

FrouFrou 03-03-2009 08:24 AM

Like you Francie...I refuse to watch the movie. The book wasn't so bad, but the movie just looks ridiculous!

My book is getting a little better...that is one reason I never quit a book. If I start it, it WILL be finished, lol...eventually. Just a slow start.

Smiling_Sara 03-04-2009 08:35 AM

I'm about 1/4 of the way through http://www.amazon.com/Meet-Mr-Smith-...6173566&sr=8-1

It's pretty good so far, makes you rethink the way most of us view sex and purity.

alinnell 03-04-2009 10:05 AM

Since I bought the Kindle, I've decided to download some free books. I'm starting with Bram Stoker's Dracula which I'm over half way done with. I have a list of classics that I want to read. But I also have a list of downloads to buy. I suppose I could download them all right now, but then I'd have a hard time deciding which to read first (if that makes any sense). I will get the newest Harlan Coben download as soon as it is released--sometime this month, so that may be my next book.

alinnell 03-04-2009 11:51 AM

Okay. I decided to download all the classics I want to read. I figure that as long as they are free, I ought to have them readily available (even though each download takes less than a minute and I can do it anywhere--no computer needed).
Here's my list:

Dracula--Bram Stoker (currently reading_
My Antonia--Willa Cather
The Book of Tea--Kakuzo Okakura
Riders of the Purple Sage--Zane Gray
Jane Eyre--Charlotte Bronte (I figure since my DD read this, I ought to as well)
The Picture of Dorian Gray--Oscar Wilde
War and Peace--Leo Tolstoy
Anna Karenina--Leo Tolstoy
Crime and Punishment--Dostoyevsky
Pride and Prejudice--Jane Austen
Sense and Sensibility--Jane Austen
Mansfield Park--Jane Austen
Great Expectations--Charles Dickens

I guess that will keep my busy for a while!

Yeah, it is definitely not the same, but I do like it for the sake of convenience. The one thing that I don't like about it is I don't have the ability to go forward to see how many "pages" until the next chapter (something that comes in handy when you're drifting off to sleep!). Actually, you CAN go forward and back, but it isn't as fast and you have to remember where you were.

I do like the fact that you don't lose your place--like you can't drop your bookmark and wonder where you were. You can go out of a book, read some other things and then go back into the book and be right where you left off.

I just downloaded, what a dozen books. It took less than 20 minutes--the searching took the most time. Now when I go for the 6 hour round trip car ride this weekend, I'll have plenty to keep my busy.

I don't know if they've made it yet, and it could just be a movie. I saw something about it in passing on a website. Also, there's now a "movie-tie-in edition" of the paperback now.

Allison, those are some good books you've downloaded! I want a Kindle but it will be ages before I can afford one.

I finished Tears of the Giraffe (loved it) and started Philippa Gregory's The Other Queen.

Lisa~tell me how you like The Other Queen. I disliked it. It actually made me mad! I preferred the two on the Boleyn girls.

Shopaholic1204 03-04-2009 09:32 PM

I'm now reading..The Society Of S by Susan Hubbard

mandalinn82 03-04-2009 09:39 PM

I'm currently on a "Mystery Exploration" at my local library, picking up a variety of books from individual mystery series to find some new favorites.

I'm loving:
Bad Hair Day series by Nancy Cohen
Charlotte LaRue series by Barbara Colley
Pennsylvania Dutch mysteries by Tamar Myers
Lucy Stone mysteries by Leslie Meier

It's neat to discover all these new series...I have lots of other favorites, but they only come out with books so often.

Glory87 03-04-2009 11:44 PM

Back from Las Vegas, exhausted! I finished The Help - I really enjoyed it :) I read it on my Sony Reader which has cool little number buttons so I can easily jump around the text ;)

Shopaholic1204 03-05-2009 12:43 PM

Well, I finished my book this morning at 4:45am, lol. So later today, I'll start reading The Switch by Sandra Brown.

Holy cow, you read it fast! I used to speed-read, but now I just like to take my time and read a couple of chapters at bedtime, and make it last. I started it on Wednesday and I've read about 6 chapters so far

evillynn33 03-05-2009 03:48 PM

I'm reading the seven bride series by Leigh Greenwood. Nice western love stories.

Well, I was traveling for work and stuck in a hotel room - my choices of fun were 11 crappy TV channels or a book :) I do read pretty fast though!

srmb60 03-06-2009 06:01 AM

I've read Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone series off and on for years. I can't even remember when I read A, B, C etc. But 'T is for Trespass' was by far the best. Loved it!
I actually read through some of the time I'm normally online!!
Now I have to wait until December for 'U'.

alinnell 03-06-2009 11:34 AM

Susan~my favorites in Sue Grafton's series were A and H. I've read them all

DS is reading the Janet Evonovich series. Last night he started searching his room. He finally 'fessed up--he is reading #4 and realized that he hadn't read #3 but he was convinced he owned it. He tore his room up looking for it and finally realized he didn't have it. He's really bummed he missed one in the series as he thinks it is most important to read them in order. I guess we'll be hitting the book store for #3 this afternoon!

Has anyone read anything from Robert Crais? I'm thinking that both my son and I might enjoy those.

As for me, I'm 3/4 or more of the way through Dracula.
