ooh, dishes..good one.

Also, I want another cast iron dutch oven....except this time I want an enameled one. Anybody have any experience with Le Creuset vs. regular enameled dutch ovens? Is it worth the extra couple hundred dollars?

I don't know about other brands, but my Le Creuset rocks my world! I have the entire set, everything they make, from the dutch oven to cute little ramekins, they just make me happy (it must be that cherry red color) - never any problems. It's nice too - because it's an easy present for family to give me.

There, now I don't feel bad about my obvious lack of housekeeping!

Plus, I think you can get great deals on it on shopnbc.com and the like around the holidays. I originally wanted it because I think it's the same pots they used on the Cosby Show. As a kid I wanted to live in their house, have him be my dad making chili in one of those pots. Good enough reason for me!

I love my Le Creuset. I use mine to bake No Knead Bread (and other crusty-type loaves), I have ramekins for little cakes and custards...and its so durable and can be handed down (I'm about to get a piece of my grandmother's collection - so awesome and special).

Do you have kids? The Rival fold 'n store griddle is something I use alot. Great for pancakes, grilled cheese, french toast, eggs, bacon, etc. I like it cause it has two separate sides each w/their own control/temp dial. Holds a lot on both sides (so if you have kids you can cook alot at once so everyone gets to eat quicker) or is perfect just using the one side. Easy peasy to clean. And the fact that it folds and takes up half the storage space? Worth. Every. Penny. And the cord is permanently attached vs. the kind that you have to plug and unplug into the griddle. Here's a pic; I got mine at Target.

A crock pot. 'nuff said! :)

A couple of really good pruners for the garden. Good leather weeding gloves. A really good spade (not David though, I find him somewhat annoying ;)). Ooo, we recently dug up 5 shrubs and relocated them and put in 9 arbs. I'm short and the shovels we have -- we'll let's just say I used them awkwardly at best. So we bought a short handled shovel just for me. I LOVE IT! The right tool makes all the difference.

Hey Mandalinn and PC - where'd you get your knives? I use Cutco (I tend to use the deboner for most things as I always find the french type cutting knives too big) and love them but am always on the lookout for that next great knife.

I love nice glasses. The right shape and size makes drinks taste better.

Tongs - absolutely. An indoor pair and one for the grill. We just picked up some for the grill from Kohl's not too long ago. Stainless steel, a locking thingy on the end - they were on sale for like 8 bucks or something.

Oh! I love the Griddler -

It's a George Foreman-type grill/panini press, a larger indoor grill that lies flat, and a griddle, all in one.

I second the magic bullet. We just got ours from Costco last week and I love it. We use it just about every day for omelets and protein shakes.

What about some good storage containers? I kept buying the same junkie plastic ones over and over because the lids stop fitting or they'd be really stained and gross looking. I finally bought a big set of glass ones and I LOVE them. It's so easy to cook AND store in the same container. Really makes holidays easy because all the leftovers go straight in the fridge.

If you're a baker you can always ask for new pans, those nifty plunger type measuring cups, canisters for ingredients, etc.

As for the Crock Pot. I have the Hamilton Beech model with 2, 4 and 6 quart bowls that fit into one base. Love it. They also nestle nicely for storing.

LeCrueset rocks. Try cooking.com - the have great sales and I order a lot of stuff from them.

ok, so Le Creuset it is. I love the green. Cooking.com is cheaper than Williams Sonoma - I'll have to keep a lookout for sales.

RE: tongs? Someone recently stole mine....wtf? Who steals tongs. Either that or the dishwasher ate them.

Good storage containers always seem to disappear as well....either DH takes them to work and they mysteriously disappear OR I offer leftovers to dinner guests and they never bring them back. I could probably use a nice set just for use at home and keep my crappy gladware ones for DH and friends.

I also found some cloth bulk food bags on Etsy....I so love Etsy. They have a clear plastic insert on the front and a label that can be wiped off. Much better than having a million canisters or plastic bags full of bulk grains.

I have a funny story about tongs ...

Several years ago we had Thanksgiving dinner at our house and we had those tongs that you turn one way to release and the other to lock - if you know what I mean. My SIL picked them up and couldn't get them to close, didn't know how they worked, and forced them closed - with one hand. :) She's this tiny, skinny, creamy skinned redhead - who knew she had it in her. Of course they were totally ruined and she was hugely embarrassed. :D

I got 3 sets of tongs in my stocking for Christmas that year.

haha! I love cooking gadgets in my stocking. My mom still sends tons of spatulas and other cool gadgets for my stocking gift.

Ohman...I need to come in here to cool off. My blood pressure is oh so high.

PhotoChick~ I almost spit out my water when you said "no, not that Magic Bullet."

Is there really any other brand for enameled dutch ovens then Le Creuset? Seriously, your grandchildren will inherit it. I have lots of cast iron, but no enameled Le Creuset yet (all vintage Griswold~I collect.)

As far as small stocking sized gadgets/utensils I love:

Microplane~so nice for zesting citrus and grating parm
Ditto the tongs~I like the OXO stainless locking tongs
A good candy thermometer~I never actually use mine for candy though
Nutmeg grater
Cookie scoop~Mine is 1T and is perfect for portioning out peanut butter and other sticky higher cal items
Cheese knife~a real one, not the kind with the wire that breaks

Oh and you can never have too many good heavy wooden spoons and silicone spatulas (I like the one piece kind, no handle to pop off.)

As far as larger appliances:

Rice maker/steamer
Electric tea kettle
Popcorn popper
Yogurt maker
Ice cream maker~so you can control what goes into it

I know this isn't for everyone, but I <3 my pressure canner!

I almost forgot, I could not bake without my silpats!

lizziep 09-26-2008 12:48 AM
