State Fair Fare Sure to Shock

I live in Texas and I don't know if this is national knowledge (though I think I saw a piece on GMA last year) but our state fair has slowly turned into a what-can-be-deep-fried-and-put-on-a-stick-fest. Granted, I've not been to any other state fair, so I don't know if this is commonplace. Generally, I go to the fair for the Texas-OU game and a ride or two, maybe some cotton candy and a carnival game. Ya know, good clean fun.

I just wanted to share with you the new foods that will appear at this year's fair. Mind you, we already have things like deep fried Twinkies, deep fried candy bars, and our famous corn dogs...and this insane turkey leg the size of my head that people are just crazy about.

So...here's the list of new stuff:

Fernie's All-American Fried Grilled Cheese Sandwich. White bread sandwich with American and cheddar cheeses dipped in egg-and-milk batter, coated with bread crumbs, and fried.

Chicken Fried Bacon. Bacon with seasoning, battered, breaded, deep fried, served with ranch or honey mustard sauce.

Fried Banana Split. Banana and honey peanut butter rolled in balls, battered, and deep-fried, topped with powdered sugar, caramel and chocolate syrups, peanuts, whipped cream, banana split-flavored ice cream bites, and cherry.

Texas Fried Jelly Bellys. Jelly Bellys rolled in funnel cake batter and fried.

Deep Fried S'mores. Marshmallow and chocolate chips sandwiched between two graham crackers, dipped in batter, fried, and dusted in powdered sugar.

Fire & Ice.
Pineapple ring, battered and deep-fried, topped with banana-flavored whipped cream that's been frozen in liquid nitrogen so it smokes.

Fried Chocolate Truffles.
Dark chocolate truffle rolled in cocoa powder, battered, deep-fried, dusted in cinnamon, sugar, and cocoa powder.

Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Waffle Balls.
Strawberries in chocolate shell, dipped in waffle batter, deep-fried, custed with powdered sugar, served on a stick.

:yikes:

Ain't Texas great? :D

I say that as a born and bred Texan, btw. Just slightly relocated. :)

Operator265 09-08-2008 10:46 PM

I just saw in our paper today that our state fair is showcasing fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Huh!!!!:?:

VivienStarlust 09-08-2008 10:57 PM

Yes, I've heard of the fried pb&j sandwiches, though I can't say I've had one...I can't imagine I would like it very much.

Photochick, I'm a native Texan too :) I never would have imagined as a kiddo that one day I could go to the fair and order a fried grilled cheese sandwich and a pineapple ring frozen in liquid nitrogen and then settle in for the pig races.

I bet there are going to be lots of elastic waistbands at the fair this year...

traveling michele 09-08-2008 11:15 PM

Ok-- that is pretty darn scary!
Where in TX are you?
I grew up and lived in Houston most of my life and find it much easier to lose weight and keep it off away from all of the temptations and HUGE portions at restaurants!
Good LORD!

jtammy 09-08-2008 11:16 PM

Okay the fried PB&J sounds pretty good to me! :)

Operator265 09-08-2008 11:26 PM

We Got Pig Races Too!!! You Texans really need to learn to keep this stuff at home.:spin::hyper:

luckymommy 09-09-2008 12:01 AM

The Fire & Ice sounds scary, but I'll admit that a lot of the other stuff sounds like great binge food, which scares me about myself! Luckily, I don't live in Texas because I wouldn't survive for a month!

luvja 09-09-2008 12:03 AM

Yuck!. Fried PB&J sammies? Whats this world coming to? I've never heard of that...
I've seen fried chocolate bars and twinkies, and thought that was insanity.
I haven't been to a local fair in a long time. I think I'll stay clear of them right now...haha.

You's a smart chickie!!!!!!

luvja 09-09-2008 12:07 AM

Thanks! hehe.
I've actually never had anything "abnormal" fried. Maybe I'm deprived?. I'm sure it tastes heavenly, as most fried foods do. I guess I'll never know!.

tater tash 09-09-2008 12:15 AM

Those deep fried smores sound amazing. They probably pack in enough calories to be counted as my entire cheat day haha.

We just recently had the famous Rib Cook-Off come through here. My BF really looked forward to it, but it didn't sound like my kind of place being a vegetarian. Figuring I would have little to no options, I bought veggie-kabobs from Trader Joes and baked them before we left. And let me say.. GOOD THING! I may have looked a little out of place with a tupperware full of veggies (to dip in all the yummy BBQ sauces!), but if it weren't for that my only "veggie" options would be fried onion rings, fried zucchini, fried pickles, fried corn on the cob, fried dough, funnel cake, fried ice cream.

I stuck to my own yummy veggies the whole night and watched in awe as people devoured these heart attacks on a plate.

"Chicken Fried Bacon. Bacon with seasoning, battered, breaded, deep fried, served with ranch or honey mustard sauce. "

What the.....? Is that nessiscary? seriously. Bacon is already fatty and greasy.
Goodness me.
Who thinks of these things.?

Shy Moment 09-09-2008 12:31 AM

Vivien
It is everywhere lol. I went to the state fair this year here in Ohio. We were lucky enough to get tickets to see Ted Nugent there, what a wonderful show. Anyway, I saw things for sale I couldn't believe lol deep fried oreo cookies was one of the things I couldn't believe. They looked really nasty.

Oper
We got to see the pig races too, it was quite fun.

Firstly, as regards the below concoction:

Eeeeew!!!!!! Im sorry but the textures of that just sounds horrible.
And also, someone mentioned deep fried oreos. why would someone do something so horrible to a poor innocent oreo! but also, imagine if all these sweet things were fried in animal fats, which they very well might be! thats really a bit sickening. I have to say i feel pretty lucky, the only things we deep fry here are fish and chips, which is only natural! yummm....

julie99s 09-09-2008 07:42 AM

It all sounds so gross an greasy.

Except those fried smores. Them sound great!!! Ship me one?? lmao!

ronni62 09-09-2008 08:26 AM

It's not just in TX! Here in Iowa they fry everything too. Haven't been to the state fair, but at one of our local fests, they had deep-fried cheesecake and deep-fried snickers. Ewwwwwwww! My DH and DS's like the funnel cakes (deep fried pancake batter), but I just can't eat the stuff-thank goodness!

techwife 09-09-2008 08:41 AM

Holy heart attack! Although, deep fried bacon? The smell of that wafting through Texas has to draw people in from CANADA!!!

Nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea - hey, Pepto Bismol!

tikanique 09-09-2008 09:10 AM

All of that sounds horrible!!! I hate the smell of deep fried food - can barely stomach the smell of frying chicken. My only weird fried food love is fried pickles and no one around here serves them except Hooters and thankfully, I don't frequent that establishment.

VivienStarlust 09-09-2008 09:33 AM

I'm a Dallas girl, so there is no escaping the fair. Luckily, none of that stuff sounds good to me. I like the old school fair food. Cotton candy and maybe a corn dog. AND A PIG RACE...what a hoot those are

Hey I don't mind the ribbing! I've lived here all my life and I'm well aware that we are the butt of many jokes (and some are spot on). Sometimes I hear Texan accents myself and crack up.

We're a big state though so it's not all cowboy boots, there's plenty of Pucci going on too. ;)

nelie 09-09-2008 10:08 AM

My parents like to go to the county fair so a couple years ago, we went while visiting. I can't remember what we ate but eating wasn't our focus. I remember grilled corn on the cob and maybe roasted chicken? The only fried thing I've had at a fair is fried zucchini and that was when I was a kid. I've never been a fan of fried things though.

ANOther 09-09-2008 11:55 AM

Here in Minnesota we're just as crazy. I think we had the deep-fried s'mores too, but the one that got the attention this year was chocolate-covered bacon! I was even going to try it, but when I got there this year (I go in the morning) the stand wasn't open until noon, and by then I was on the other side of the fairgrounds and just about ready to go home. And I think I got in enough walking to at least partly compensate for what I ate (strawberry shortcake on a scone base + blackcurrant ice tea for breakfast, lamb with tzatziki, baklava and Mediterranean lemonade [flavored with honey and basil] for lunch)

luvja 09-09-2008 12:05 PM

chocolate covered bacon? quite possibly the weirdest thing I have ever heard!.

It's actually not bad. :)

I was born in Texas (Corpus Christi). This makes me a native. Sometimes I let the Texan in me out just long enough to enjoy some sweet tea (lots of lemon) and..

deep fried pickles!

(and my meemaws gumbo that looks a lot like car sludge.)

(Oh, and barbequed crab, which "woke up in the Gulf this morning"...)

Droooooool. I love fried pickles with a little bit of remoulade to dip them in!

You're the first person I've ever "met" online who also called her grandmother "meemaw". :)

.

junebug41 09-09-2008 01:09 PM

 meemaw and ma-maw... Is that a southern thing or just isolated to East Texas?

PhotoChick 09-09-2008 01:13 PM

It must be East Texas. My dad's mom was always Meemaw to us kids. But my mom's mom was Nana - which I think is more common and also a more "Northern" nickname.

.

mandalinn82 09-09-2008 01:17 PM

The Texas State Fair also has, in the "Food Competitions" Section, a contest called something like "Fry it for the Fair with Canola Oil". The theme? Foods deep fried on a stick!

Thin4Good 09-09-2008 01:26 PM

The only strange fried thing I have had was a fried sandwich. It was delicious but I was thinking the restaurant was well placed as it was a block away from the best cardiac hospital in the state. :P

I have a MaMaw. :) (I'm originally from Alabama) Paw Paws and Pa Paws are also quite common.

Shannon in ATL 09-09-2008 02:05 PM

Photo & June - We called my dad's mother MeeMaw, his grandmother was Mawmaw & grandfather was Pawpaw... All from GA...

VivienStarlust 09-09-2008 02:12 PM

aww. I had a pa-paw too. I miss him, he used to push me around in a wheelbarrow when I was little. :)

And I agree about the fried pickles. I wouldn't try one for the longest time but when I did I fell in love

sarahyu 09-09-2008 02:15 PM

Ok, I have to admit that some of that sounds tasty. I'm originally from the midwest, maybe it's our upbringing. It's a good thing I don't go to the fair, I'd be very tempted by deep fried bacon. Ok, time to go get a drink of water and maybe eat a pickle so I don't start feeling deprived. I'm a sick puppy at times. At least I've learned to control my leanings.

not just TX, some of us native Hoosiers call them mammaw and pappaw. Used to know a lady who grew up in Virginia who called them meemaw too! Maybe we're all just a little hillbilly!;)

ok I have to ask - just exactly how does someone deep-fry mac'n'cheese? Sounds nasty messy!

PhotoChick 09-09-2008 02:59 PM

Mmm. Alton Brown has a great recipe for fried mac-n-cheese.

Basically you take day old mac that's been refrigerated - so it's firm - and cut it into cubes. Then dip it in egg, dip it in breadcrumbs (I've used panko before to get the most crunch), and fry it.

I've made it twice and it's heaven on a plate. :D

Of course it's also 10 ba-jillion calories, so it's not something I make or eat every day.

.

tamaralynn 09-09-2008 09:40 PM

The Funnel cake with jelly bellies and deep fried smores are the ones that appeal to me the most LOL. Thank goodness my frier is broken - or i'd be temped to try making it! LOL

We do have the smoked turkey legs here during the Calgary Stampede - I can't go without having that and corn on the cob, YUM!
