  • The Texas State Fair also has, in the "Food Competitions" Section, a contest called something like "Fry it for the Fair with Canola Oil". The theme? Foods deep fried on a stick!
  • The only strange fried thing I have had was a fried sandwich. It was delicious but I was thinking the restaurant was well placed as it was a block away from the best cardiac hospital in the state. :P

I have a MaMaw. (I'm originally from Alabama) Paw Paws and Pa Paws are also quite common.
  • Photo & June - We called my dad's mother MeeMaw, his grandmother was Mawmaw & grandfather was Pawpaw... All from GA...
  • aww. I had a pa-paw too. I miss him, he used to push me around in a wheelbarrow when I was little.

And I agree about the fried pickles. I wouldn't try one for the longest time but when I did I fell in love
  • Ok, I have to admit that some of that sounds tasty. I'm originally from the midwest, maybe it's our upbringing. It's a good thing I don't go to the fair, I'd be very tempted by deep fried bacon. Ok, time to go get a drink of water and maybe eat a pickle so I don't start feeling deprived. I'm a sick puppy at times. At least I've learned to control my leanings.

  • at Wisc State Fair I saw Deep Fried mac n cheese, pickle, and smores, and oreo's amoung a few others
  • Quote: meemaw and ma-maw... Is that a southern thing or just isolated to East Texas?
not just TX, some of us native Hoosiers call them mammaw and pappaw. Used to know a lady who grew up in Virginia who called them meemaw too! Maybe we're all just a little hillbilly!

ok I have to ask - just exactly how does someone deep-fry mac'n'cheese? Sounds nasty messy!
  • Mmm. Alton Brown has a great recipe for fried mac-n-cheese.

Basically you take day old mac that's been refrigerated - so it's firm - and cut it into cubes. Then dip it in egg, dip it in breadcrumbs (I've used panko before to get the most crunch), and fry it.

I've made it twice and it's heaven on a plate.

Of course it's also 10 ba-jillion calories, so it's not something I make or eat every day.

  • The Funnel cake with jelly bellies and deep fried smores are the ones that appeal to me the most LOL. Thank goodness my frier is broken - or i'd be temped to try making it! LOL

We do have the smoked turkey legs here during the Calgary Stampede - I can't go without having that and corn on the cob, YUM!
  • Tamaralynn, I was thinking of the stampede too, the deep fried mac and cheese was popular this year, I tried it and it was a pretty good hang over cure!

The resturarnt I used to work at had at one point, deep friend ice cream, deep fried cheesecake and for a very brief time a deep fried milk shake on the menu!
  • Quote: All of that sounds horrible!!! I hate the smell of deep fried food - can barely stomach the smell of frying chicken. My only weird fried food love is fried pickles and no one around here serves them except Hooters and thankfully, I don't frequent that establishment.
Me, too, about the fried pickles. I've had them twice: once in 2005 or 2006, on the recommendation of a friend at a State Fair, and once in a fancy schmancy restaurant. The Fair food was better, but I almost never go to the Fair, so I am pretty safe. I think.

The stuff on that list actually makes me a bit queasy.
  • I'm not sure that we will have all that "good" stuff at our State Fair in Mississippi this year. We mostly have the same old same old same old stuff: corn, nachos, sausage, etc.

    Go Texas

I do, however, have a candied apple every year. That's partially healthy
  • Quote: So...here's the list of new stuff:

Fried Banana Split. Banana and honey peanut butter rolled in balls, battered, and deep-fried, topped with powdered sugar, caramel and chocolate syrups, peanuts, whipped cream, banana split-flavored ice cream bites, and cherry.

Deep Fried S'mores. Marshmallow and chocolate chips sandwiched between two graham crackers, dipped in batter, fried, and dusted in powdered sugar.[B]

Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Waffle Balls. Strawberries in chocolate shell, dipped in waffle batter, deep-fried, custed with powdered sugar, served on a stick.

Gak - where was the food porn warning

Can't spend too much time here - I can feel my arteries hardening just reading about this stuff

I'm afraid I'll have to admit that I would be sorely tempted to try the fried banana split, and the deep fried s'mores actually sound heavenly (and I haven't craved a sweet in months), but why on earth would someone feel the need to take a perfectly yummy chocolate dipped strawberry and fry it? I think it's perverse
