  • Quote: beg to differ here! Linda Ronstadt is NOT better than the Everly brothers!
You're wrong, in this case. She sings that song with FAR more passion than they ever did.

Quote: Aretha Franklin - Respect. Originally an Otis Redding song, Aretha OWNS the definitive version.
    Oh yeah.

Quote: Honorable Mention: "Halleluja", originally by Leonard Cohen, owned by Jeff Buckley.
    Definitely.

Quote: Easy Like Sunday Morning - Mike Patton, originally performed by Lionel Richie.
I never realised this was a cover. And you're absolutely right.

Quote: It's a toss-up for me: Oh, Pretty Woman--Van Halen or Roy Orbison. Of course Roy is the original, but I grew up with the Van Halen version. Usually it is the first one you hear that you get used to and that's the one you like best. But in this case, both are extraordinary. (Al Green did it too, but I don't think I've ever heard his version.)
Roy for sure. But then I never was a big Van Halen fan. Especially when they got that curly headed guy (Sammy someone?) towards the end. David le Roth was a showpony, but at least he was entertaining.

Quote: And Bryan Ferry's "Jealous Guy" - cover of John Lennon - just gives me goose bumps all over!!
Another vote for "you're absolutely right".
  • I don't know if it's the best cover ever, but I also really like Matt Weddle's cover of Outkast's "Hey Ya". I also TOTALLY love Alanis Morisette's cover of "My Humps" - genius.
  • Chris Cornell and Eleven's cover of Ave Maria blows my mind every time.
  • The Sundays' version of Wild Horses by the Rolling Stones. *swoon*
  • Oh yeah, please don't flame me too badly about my preference on The Rolling Stone's song...I know they're one of the best bands in history and all...I just think The Sundays did something really interesting with it.
  • Quote: Yes! When a song is reclaimed through a cover, especially when it's always known as "Respect" by Aretha Franklin (and it's such a landmark song). Not that Otis Redding isn't awesome, but that song belongs to Aretha.

Honorable Mention: "Halleluja", originally by Leonard Cohen, owned by Jeff Buckley.
I quite like John Cale's version of Halleluja...I'll have to check out the Jeff Buckley one.

I'm posting like a mad woman on this thread I know...but I'm crazy about music.

Go get that song. Go get it now.

  • haha I totally just looked it up on youtube and realized I've heard it before and just didn't recall the name...could be the vicodin...but I'm not going into that part.
  • Phew! That was close!
  • Sarah McLachlan's version of "The Rainbow Connection"... sorry, Kermit...
  • The Postal Service covering Phil Collin's "Against All Odd's"

    and

    Johnny Cash covering "Hurt"
  • OMG Yes, Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. Talk about GOOSEBUMPS!!!
  • YES, good call!!
  • I like Sarah Mclachlans version of XTC's song Dear God.

I also like Flogging Molly's version of Delilah (I think Tom Jones did it first?). I have an incredible live version where they throw in some of Elvis's song That's Alright. It's my super workout song.

Otherwise I agree with Cash's version of Hurt.
And that Alanis version of My Humps is freaking hilarious.
  • another fave of mine...

Judas Priest doing a cover of Joan Baez's "Diamonds and Rust"
