I don't usually watch much, just whatever I happen to randomly catch.

I do hope they show some women's pole vaulting -- I've met the US record holder, am friends with some of her former coaches from college. She had some injuries but managed to qualify, and I'm REALLY hoping she does well! :goodluck:

I love the sports! I watch everything that is broadcasted on tv. Love to cheer for Greek and Cypriot athletes.

That said, I will miss the Olympics of 2008 as I have no tv in the UK and I am not going home before the 23rd of August. *sigh*

wasn't That A Great Opening Ceremony?! Wow!

murphmitch 08-09-2008 10:50 PM

Amazing. I've never seen anything like it. It would be hard to beat that show in the future Olympics!

ANOther 08-10-2008 12:35 PM

Opening ceremony: the mind boggles. Wow. Holy cow. Awesome.

National anthem glitch: maybe if I was Phelps I'd have sung the rest of it. If the same problem had happened at the medal ceremony for the fencers we'd never hear the last

TV coverage of peripheral events: when I get up in the morning and surf out to USA, MSNBC or CNBC all they seem to be showing is basketball and soccer: give me the individual sports, hoops and soccer we can see anytime so those I'm about the *least* interested in ::ducks and runs::, but this morning I caught some of the horsey stuff YEAH

Rant: I remember when shows like Wide World of Sports and Sports Spectacular used to have the Olympic-type sports every week: track meets, swimming/diving meets, gymnastic meets, skiing races and ski-jumping in the winter (remember the WWoS "Agony of Defeat" guy crashing off the ski jump?), the odd horse show, and of course figure skating (except there wasn't as much of it in the 70s and 80s as in the post-Nancy-and-Tonya era, just the national and world championships). Heck, WWoS and Spectacular even had stuff too obscure for the Olympics (like speedskaters jumping over barrels in the Catskills, or sledders on the Cresta run in Switzerland, although that type of sliding is now an O-event). Save for the figure skating, all that stuff has practically vanished now: just for the heck of it I looked at ESPN's recent schedule, and if at one time ESPN took the track, swim and gym meets off WWoS's hands, all they have now is baseball, basketball, college football, NASCAR and the occasional horse race (and figure skating in season), and if I see WWoS they're just auto races and SOME world figure skating championship disciplines (they don't have same-day skating coverage in prime-time any more because the worlds are at the same time as March Madness). Jim McKay and Howard Cosell must be turning in their graves. So if you like track, swim and gym, you either have to get your 4-year fix at the Os or else try to see if they're shown on some really obscure cable or satellite TV net? end rant

Men's freestyle relay (Phelps gold medal #2): awesome race, I thought they'd never make it but they did! USA USA USA!

They got the national anthem right this time and played it all the way through

Tonight: more of the horsey stuff (3-day endurance test) on Oxygen from 6-8 ET/5-7 CT

My favorites are swimming, diving and gymnastics!

I have to vent - I am really annoyed with the coverage. I have to admit I did not pay any attention to the last couple of Olympics (if not more) so I don't know if the coverage was the same, but I find it annoying to have everything squeezed into one large block on one channel without any further division - e.g. yesterday, there was cycling, beach volleyball, swimming. When I watched, there was also bits of gymnastics and even rowing. Not that I mind but the problem is I can't sit at the TV all day and hope to catch the one category that I really want to watch.
I was really really hoping to see Dara Torres swim (and hopefully) win. I have no idea when she will be on next.
I did see Michael Phelps win and that was nice (although I suppose I should have cheered for Canada LOL) but I really want to see Dara!

Tomato, I'm with you on this. It used to be that you knew what you were going to watch and you could plan accordingly. I also think that although the human interest pieces are ok, don't cut out so much of the competition just to get the sob story in. Don't get me wrong, some of that is fine, but don't lose sight of why we watch... the competition!!!

KLK 08-11-2008 03:30 PM

I'm not a "sports person" by any means, but love the Olympics! I'm not around the TV so much, but these are my favorite events to watch:

1. Swimming - all events
2. Track and field - running, jumps, etc.
3. Gymnastics (esp. men's)

Shopaholic1204 08-11-2008 05:24 PM

I don't think it's new. I can't ever remember not being annoyed by this.

BMX is on Days 12 and 13 of the games - 8/20 and 8/21. It's listed under "Cycling".

I absolutely love the Olympics! I prefer the Summer games. I enjoy: swimming, track, gymnastics, tennis, and basketball. Actually I will watch most anything because I am inspired by the level of dedication it takes to be an athlete let alone an Olympian. Fortunately my tv guide (from the Washington Post) has a guide to the events broken down by day, time block which can be pretty big but at least you know what block of time to watch, and channel. That has been helpful.
