I just started taking Topamex for my migraines last week and the main side effect that my doctor told me about was weight loss. Hmm.. not gonna complain about that one! LOL Anyway, is anyone else prescibed Topamex? Just wondering if they saw a dramatic weightloss when they started taking it.
My GF has chronic migranes and her doctor wanted to prescribe her Topamax, but she wasn't too keen on the idea, since it severely supresses appetite which causes more migranes.
While saying that, a friend of mine started Topamax for seizures and has lost an incredible amount of weight. In addition to that, some people are buying Topamax illegally to use it as a weight loss drug. So yes, the weight loss rumors are most likely true.
I used to be on Topamax for a mood disorder. It was one of many medications prescribed to my while in the hospital for psychiatric treatment. It does reduce your appetite quite a bit, although I didn't stay on the drug for long, because this hospital had me on 5-6 different meds and within the first couple of months of being out of the hospital these were almost all eliminated because I was completely overmedicated!
Yes, it's true. However, I hope you're seeing a neurologist about this as they are the specialists in this area... I would say that if you're migraines don't get better, make sure you ween yourself off appropriately and don't stop abruptly. Keep a record of your migraines and don't miss a dose; no alcohol, either. (This Rx is commonly prescribed for epileptic patients, fyi.) The unfortunate side effects are terrible including depression and trouble with memory. Talk to your pharmacist about the side effects and when to talk about other treatments w/ your doctor(s).
We see a lot of it being prescribed lately at my pharmacy. My SIL also is on it right now and the migraines aren't getting better and she's tried everything including Botox injections in the neck!
I wish you luck! I've only had a few migraines in my life and can't imagine living with them everyday.
Wow, aymster, botox in the neck supposedly reduces migranes? I will have to pass that on to my GF! She is having a really hard time with her migranes right now - Keppra is no longer working and she is overusing her Triptons (fast-acting migrane meds) because she has been getting migranes for days on end. She is potentially getting prescribed Topamax or another med called Elevil, which has a slew of potentially unpleasant side effects.
Yeah, Botox in the neck. She's had her hormones checked, tried everything from Imitrex to Relpax, massages, rolfing.... you name it. Elavil (amitriptyline) can have some unpleasant side effects including dry mouth. Some people use that drug for sleep. Keppra is in the same class as Topamax, so I would say that if Keppra isn't working, Topamax may not help either. Good luck!
I have been prescribed keppra as an antisiezure medication because i have siezures and i would not say that it has helped me lose weight but i have days where i have no appetiete and days i do and also it has caused me to have migraines now. my friend on the other hand has horribly bad migraines almost daily and her doctor just prescribed her topamex so lets hope for the best for that she all ready skinny lets hope she doesnt loose anymore weight. thanks for you stories it has helped me and my friend and hope everything is working out for you.
I was prescribed Topamax as a mood stabilizer for my bipolar. It did seem to help reduce my appetite. I didn't stay on it long.
It is noted as a med that reduces appetite. However, it can have some side effects that are a real pain. It can make you think slow, not be able to think of a word as your talking, and seeming a little slow. It has the nickname "Dopamax". I did experience some of these effects. I have heard that these side effects can decrease if you find the right level for you personally.
