A New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle

I must admit that I am really seeing myself in this book.

Jen415 03-17-2008 12:36 PM

It is a great book, isn't it? And let's face it--anything Oprah endorses turns to GOLD! But this book is much more significant than anything else she has endorsed.

If you like A New Earth, you'll love any of the books by Esther Hicks. I highly recommend Ask and It Is Given!!

Just Deb 03-17-2008 03:08 PM

I will add it to my list. I want to read his other book The power of now also. And I still have to finish Eat, Pray, Love. Got sidetracked.

kl_life 03-17-2008 03:16 PM

So glad I found 3FC and am reading lots of old posts!

lbug 03-17-2008 03:26 PM

I'm also reading -A New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle- taking the online class which is wonderful. Anyone else taking the class?

LisaMarie71 03-17-2008 04:48 PM

I'm reading The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama. I figure if he's getting my vote I should learn a bit more about him.

I rarely read nonfiction, though. I'm between novels right now and will probably read Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult next. Also, I'll be rereading George Orwell's Animal Farm with my 9th graders shortly.

Andria 03-17-2008 04:51 PM

Me too! I'm also reading -A New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle

that's a great book. Read it a couple years ago

StillTryin 03-18-2008 10:35 AM

Just finished two mini books, one was The Cowboy's Lady and the other was The Sheriff Takes A Wife. Both good, similar in story line, I love Debbi Macomber's books. She has about 3 series of stories that I read as they are released.

FrouFrou 03-18-2008 03:15 PM

The last few reads...

Water For Elephants...Sara Gruen (GREAT book!)
A Winter Haunting...Dan Simmons
Currently reading and almost done with...The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio...Terry Ryan (Saw the movie a few times and loved it and wanted to read the book)

babenwaiting 03-18-2008 06:18 PM

Just finished the Andrew Morton biography of Tom Cruise, which is mainly about his connections with Scientology. YIKES! Can we say science fiction cult?????????? :o I'm afraid I'll never look at his movies the same again, a shame since he's a good actor.

SugarSpunSister 03-19-2008 07:44 AM

I am nearly done with Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe, which has been a fascinating lesson in old time feminism, although a bit difficult to read because of the Constante Capitalisation and Strangge Spellinges of Olde Wordes.
Next I am going to attempt to read the massive tome The Brother Karamazov by Dostoyevsky because I am told I would like it and, to be quite honest, a boy a fancy has listed it in his favourite books on his Facebook page and I happened to own it already so I thought, why not.
I do have a habit of attempting to read very pretentious books which can be sometimes rather hard to get through, and thus leave me avoiding them or taking forever to read them. I owe quite a lot of library fines on 'To The Lighthouse' by Virgina Woolf. eep.

tamaralynn 03-19-2008 08:09 AM

The Fair Isle trilogy, by Susan Carroll... wonderful books. I read The Dark Queen and just finished the Courtesian. Looking for the Silver Rose.

GirlyGirlSebas 03-19-2008 08:26 AM

I'm reading the Odd Thomas trilogy by Dean Koontz.

Glory87 03-19-2008 10:57 AM

Just finished The Post Birthday World which I absolutely adored. I'm almost done with Getting Rid of Matthew which has been moderate cheeky British fun in the style of Bridget Jones (great beginning, but I have a feeling the ending is going to annoy me). Next up - The United States of Argula: How We Became a Gourmet Nation because I'm a foodie and it was recommended by a friend.

I loved Prize Winner - I bought a copy for my mom and my step mom! Such a great book and based on such a remarkable true life story.

One for the Money by Janet Evanovich. On the recommendations of so many, I'm starting with the first one and see how I like them. So far, so good.

I'm a huge Jodi Picoult fan and just finished Songs of the Humpback Whale. Next by her I'm reading Mercy.

When she's ON she's GREAT, but sometimes I get very aggravated with her books (I hated Perfect Match with a passion). I have Change of Heart on my reserve list at the library, should get it in a few months ;) If you like Jodi Picoult, I would definitely recommend Laura Lippman (married to the guy that writes for the Wire, for added interest). She has written a series of mysteries with Tess Monaghan as the lead (which I think are okay) but she has written 3 great stand alone stories which are very Jodi-like (cool twisty type endings):

To The Power of Three

Every Secret Thing

What the Dead Know

The books do have some recurring characters, but they are fairly stand alone. I read them out of order, but I listed them by publication!

queenofthehouse 03-19-2008 03:42 PM

Thanks, I'll have to keep her in mind. I agree about Jodi, most of the endings of her books I don't care for. The only book though that I had a hard time finishing was Second Glance. I really didn't like that one at all. My favorites are Salem Falls and Plain Truth. I bought Change of Heart but haven't started it. I think she has 15 books, and I need to read 4: Picture Perfect, Mercy, Keeping Faith and Change of Heart. I have them all here ready to go, but I'm taking a bit of a break from her right now.

The picture of Dorian Gray, great book which could work as a movie.

I remember this as a movie! I looked it up on IMDB and it's been filmed many times, the most recently 2006. This is what I remember from when I was a kid - it was super creepy when I was little!

The Road by Cormac McCarthy (also wrote No Country For Old Men)

Really dark devastating book that I can't say I enjoyed but it certainly snuck up on me and packed a wallop at the end. Finished it in a coffee shop and had to hide my tears.

Glory87 03-20-2008 01:48 PM

Oh yeah, I love that "genre" of fiction (The Stand, Swan Song, Lucifer's Hammer, World War Z) but The Road was the most "literary" book of that type I have ever read, it sure packed a wallop. I loved it! Checked it out of the library, liked it so much I bought a copy (which I rarely do - way too many books already).

FrouFrou 03-20-2008 02:18 PM

Glory...the book (Prize Winner) was great! I finished it last night and now I want to see the movie again, lol.

Happy reading all!

WaterRat 03-20-2008 02:34 PM

Great ideas. I just took back the last of my library books, and have been rereading some of my paperback Dick Francis mysteries. I am a mystery fanatic. I'm listening to Peter Robinson's newest Friend of the Devil in my car,and have several of Deborah Crombie's older ones on my MP3 player. I also have Water for Elephants waiting there too! :)

I'm off to find Prize Winner on the shelves. I'm actually a library director, and that's another reason I love threads like this - not only do I find great books to read, I find ones that I need to buy for my library - like New Earth.

Good for you. I don't care for the self-help-y stuff and I'm not really into quasi-literary fiction unless it has a thematic element that interests me, I like thrillers. I should read Francis again, I like horsey stuff (try finding novels by Lyndon Stacey, she also writes horsey thrillers, and Royal Heist [UK edition title Royal Flush by Lynda LaPlante). I finished Skate Crime and tonight I'm starting Capital Crimes by Lawrence Sanders (the guy who wrote the McNally and xth Deadly Sin books), I think I read it when it first came out in the mid-80s: it's the Rasputin story updated to modern-day Washington, and the little boy with hemophilia is the president's son

Me too! I just started the 3rd book. Isn't it great? The next one comes out in May.

Glory87 03-26-2008 10:45 AM

I really enjoy fantasy but haven't found any really good fantasy books in a long time. I just finished the Lies of Locke Lamora and was pleasantly surprised. It was like The Sopranos crossed with Ocean's 11 starring the Medicis with a little Oliver Twist. Lots of profanity, lots of violence - just FYI.

Characters were funny, lots of good dialogue, interesting world-building, the plot was a little bit all over the place (going one way and then another). There were a couple of references to flashback stories that were intriguing but never followed up on, so I'm going to check out the sequel.

almostheaven 03-28-2008 01:18 PM

Another James Patterson novel on Detective Alex Cross: "Roses are Red". And I have "Violets are Blue" to start next. Notice a theme? LOL

Sorcha33 03-28-2008 01:39 PM

Just finished a re-read of "A Breath of Snow and Ashes" (I read it so fast the first time around I wanted to take my time on the second!), and am now reading "Remember Me?" by Sophie Kinsella. It's light chick-lit, and I picked it up at the airport on a recent trip - it's a fun book, though!

Up next is the new Stephen King.

momof4girls 03-28-2008 02:14 PM

Karen Kingsbury -Just beyond the clouds.

Tomato 03-28-2008 02:33 PM

The last two books I read were Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreve and Trespass by Valerie Martin.
Trespass is contemporary, Fortune's Rocks is from the end of last century. Both were very good. I am not a fan of Anita Shreve so I was surprised how much I enjoyed the book.
