Oh yeah, I love that "genre" of fiction (The Stand, Swan Song, Lucifer's Hammer, World War Z) but The Road was the most "literary" book of that type I have ever read, it sure packed a wallop. I loved it! Checked it out of the library, liked it so much I bought a copy (which I rarely do - way too many books already).

Glory...the book (Prize Winner) was great! I finished it last night and now I want to see the movie again, lol.

Happy reading all!

Great ideas. I just took back the last of my library books, and have been rereading some of my paperback Dick Francis mysteries. I am a mystery fanatic. I'm listening to Peter Robinson's newest Friend of the Devil in my car,and have several of Deborah Crombie's older ones on my MP3 player. I also have Water for Elephants waiting there too! :)

I'm off to find Prize Winner on the shelves. I'm actually a library director, and that's another reason I love threads like this - not only do I find great books to read, I find ones that I need to buy for my library - like New Earth.

Good for you. I don't care for the self-help-y stuff and I'm not really into quasi-literary fiction unless it has a thematic element that interests me, I like thrillers. I should read Francis again, I like horsey stuff (try finding novels by Lyndon Stacey, she also writes horsey thrillers, and Royal Heist [UK edition title Royal Flush by Lynda LaPlante). I finished Skate Crime and tonight I'm starting Capital Crimes by Lawrence Sanders (the guy who wrote the McNally and xth Deadly Sin books), I think I read it when it first came out in the mid-80s: it's the Rasputin story updated to modern-day Washington, and the little boy with hemophilia is the president's son

Me too! I just started the 3rd book. Isn't it great? The next one comes out in May.

I really enjoy fantasy but haven't found any really good fantasy books in a long time. I just finished the Lies of Locke Lamora and was pleasantly surprised. It was like The Sopranos crossed with Ocean's 11 starring the Medicis with a little Oliver Twist. Lots of profanity, lots of violence - just FYI.

Characters were funny, lots of good dialogue, interesting world-building, the plot was a little bit all over the place (going one way and then another). There were a couple of references to flashback stories that were intriguing but never followed up on, so I'm going to check out the sequel.

Another James Patterson novel on Detective Alex Cross: "Roses are Red". And I have "Violets are Blue" to start next. Notice a theme? LOL

Just finished a re-read of "A Breath of Snow and Ashes" (I read it so fast the first time around I wanted to take my time on the second!), and am now reading "Remember Me?" by Sophie Kinsella. It's light chick-lit, and I picked it up at the airport on a recent trip - it's a fun book, though!

Up next is the new Stephen King.

The last two books I read were Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreve and Trespass by Valerie Martin.
Trespass is contemporary, Fortune's Rocks is from the end of last century. Both were very good. I am not a fan of Anita Shreve so I was surprised how much I enjoyed the book.

Remember me is awesome!! I read it in a day. I love all of Sophie Kinsella's books

I'm currently reading "Undead and Uneasy" by MaryJanice Davidson.

Last week I read Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult, which was about a school shooting. That topic scares me a little, since I'm a high school teacher, but it was a good novel. Then I read sort of a "young adult" book called Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. It's a vampire love story, and it's a series that's become really popular, but I hated it. Ugh.

Right now I'm reading that Eckhart Tolle book, A New Earth, and a book about breastfeeding. I'm about to start Philippa Gregory's The Boleyn Inheritance. I just wish Gregory wouldn't make all those grammatical errors, like the comma splices she has all over the place. I can overlook it for a good story, I guess...

Just finished rereading Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera and I'm almost done with Susan Kay's Phantom - Leroux is still the best and will always be cannon but Kay has an interesting take on the story - especialy as a prequel. Her version of Erik's past is wonderfuly vivid and immaginative - but once she gets into the teritory of the original novel it starts to read like bad phan-fiction.

Once I finish Kay I need to get back to Henry and Clara (can't remember the author). I misplaced it for a bit and now I want to get back into it. This great historical novel about the couple that was with the Lincolns on April 15 (14?) 1865 at Ford's theatre.

I'm also picking my way through A Different Plain, it's a book of short fiction written by Nebraska authors put out by the University Press and edited by Ladette Randolph (my MIL) - I'm really enjoying it so far. Ladette has impecible taste - this is an older book that she worked on. I finished The Big Empty a few weeks ago, which is the newer one of this series, it's a collection of short non-fiction from Nebraska writers. And before that was This is Not the Tropics, which is her writing, again short stories.

And my hubby and I are reading Enslaved By Ducks aloud on car trips - I read it about a year ago but it is SOOOO funny!
