Question Any other salt lovers here?

I am a salt fiend and started using a salt substitute about 8 years ago bc I was worried about all the sodium. I now have struggle with constipation and am wondering if the two could be related. Any thoughts?

I'm not sure why the two would be related, as long as you are adequately hydrated. Do you have family medical history or medical conditions that would warrant sodium restriction? Because otherwise, salt gets an overrated bad rap.

I'd suspect inadequate fiber intake as the culprit.

I rarely get less than 50g fiber/day. I am a veggie junky.

Don't know what to suggest for the constipation issue, maybe time to visit the doc?

I eat alot of salt since I'm lazy and eat alot of vegan frozen meals and also alot of hot sauces on food. But I've never had any problems related to my sodium intake, so it isn't something I worry about.

I often have digestive issues like constipation due to a sensitive stomach and hormones, but I can't say my propensity for salt has affected it much. I've always found that lots of fiber, water, and exercise (even walking) has helped keep constipation at bay, but that's just me.

Have you made any progress with this uncomfortable conundrum, girl81?

A healthy adult with a healthy diet really shouldn't worry too much about salt intake unless a doctor specifically said to cut back. If you think it's the salt substitute causing it, just switch back to regular salt. There's health problems that can happen from too little salt, just as there is with too much.

Pfft. Salt. I never worry about salt now that I'm not eating processed foods anymore. Humans need salt, it's an essential electrolyte that helps carry nutrients throughout the body! In fact, I exercise so often (bike commuter here) that I go out of my way to eat salt and add sea salt to my food. Yes, I love salt. No, I don't limit it.

Favorite sources of salt
* Sardines
* Salmon w/sea salt
* Rice cakes w/salt
* Chicken with pink sea salt dumped all over it :P
* Tuna
* Sushi
* Soups
