Chewing Challenge!

  • Hi guys!

I fell off the wagon a bit recently, but in the past couple of weeks I've gotten down to 116 pounds from eating intuitively and slowly. I've got four pounds to lose by the 15th September (starting university!), so I can start at 8 stone. I know it doesn't seem like a lot of weight to lose, but on my frame I know it will make a difference.

To lose the weight, I'm going to chew each bite of food 50-100 times (including liquid foods) before swallowing. I'm personally doing intuitive eating, but no matter what diet you guys are following, or how much weight you need to lose, please don't hesitate to join me in my challenge and see if it works for you!

Chewing more works because it makes you feel full and satisfied quicker, and is also better for your digestive system and helps you absorb nutrients more efficiently.

So guys, 50-100 chews for the next four weeks, starting tomorrow! You can also join at any time during the process. Who's going to join me?
  • I believe in chewing slowly, too. I think it's better for our bodies and, like you said, it helps digest the nutrients and makes us feel more satisfied. But I have to admit 50-100 chews sounds a bit...um...disgusting. Where did you hear about the benefits of chewing that much?
  • I actually heard about it from macrobiotics, but instead of following the diet I'm just doing the chewing. To be honest, it did seem a little weird at first but never disgusting, as long as you take small bites
  • Eating is supposed to be fun, I'd rather keep it that way. How is 50-100 any better than, say, 10+? I have definitely tracked chewing to stay mindful but it always turned into mush around 15-20...
  • I tried to eat slowly cause I heard it will make me feel more satisfied but I ended up getting to goal eating like a cavewoman.
    OM NOMNOMNOM
  • Well I wouldn't knock it until you've tried it guys, because it's now Wednesday and I'm 113.25 pounds, whereas on Sunday I was 116! I understand that it might not be for everyone.
I think it works by helping you feel satisfied so much quicker, and also by making sure there's a lot less undigested food hanging around in your body, which weighs a lot in itself.

It's only been a few days and:
    - I feel more energetic and less sluggish
    - I feel lighter, both literally and as a general feeling in my body
    - Things are a lot easier in the bathroom (sorry if that's TMI)
    - I am fuller for longer
    - Eating slowly gives my stomach the time to realise when it's just at that satisfied mark, rather than going from ravenously hungry to uncomfortably full.

Also, if any of you guys are trying this, a tip if you find the counting of chews monotonous, or it's distracting you from watching TV or reading (if you like to do that while you eat): instead of counting the chews, you could just wait until your morsel feels and tastes like water. That way, even if you're eating ice cream, you know that it's been digested to the maximum it can be in your mouth.

But again, it's not for everyone, I totally understand. I just thought it would be mean not to share it, as it's working so well for me!

Hope your weight loss/maintenance journeys are going well, whatever method you're using.
  • Hi guys,

Just wanted to let you know that I reached my goal weight today (112 pounds). Really pleased! It definitely works - I haven't changed what I've been eating, in fact I've had a lot of chocolate, potatoes, all the things you normally wouldn't have on a diet!

    Off to celebrate now!
  • Congrats!
