What's your BMI?

Just curious where the featherweights stand.

I'm 5'2" & at 122 lbs my BMI is 22.4

I would like it to be closer to 20. I *think* that is a good goal?

fitmom 07-11-2011 12:39 PM

I'm 5'6" & 117 lbs. so my BMI is 18.9. Sounds like you are doing just fine and congrats on the fifteen lbs. gone too!

skinny fast 07-11-2011 12:43 PM

That's excellent, fitmom!!! I suppose I would like to be closer to your score. I can definetly see where I need to lose FAT! You only have 5 #s to go... that's great!

And thanks. I love upping that chickie :)

fitmom 07-11-2011 12:48 PM

But somehow the last five are the hardest to go, lol. Although honestly, I wouldn't obsess over your BMI, you should figure out what your body fat percentage is (if you don't already) b/c that's a number that means more. My doctor told me that. But it's good to know both, I suppose so you can gauge where you are at in your progress.

Dorian5 07-11-2011 01:20 PM

My BMI is 21.7 as of this morning, which is right smack in the middle of normal.

Normal BMI = 18.5–24.9

115lbs will put my BMI at 20.0 even.

I need some muscle honestly, I wouldn't mind having a higher BMI if my body fat % was lower. :)

skinnyelle39 07-11-2011 01:42 PM

Im 22.5 as of this morning...I think Id like to get to about 20... but we shall see.

Fitmom You are sooo tiny!!! Were u small to begin with and gained due to "life" happening or was your current weight obtained by diet and exercise ( I hope that makes sense, LOL) do you have a small frame? Sorry to pry but Im always curious about people who are my height and manage to get below 130 and maintain. Always been impossible for me :)

shellofself 07-11-2011 01:47 PM

I second that question, skinnyelle39! The thinnest I've ever been at 5'6 (as an adult) was when I weighed in at 125lbs - and that was impossible for me to maintain. My body was happiest at 130lbs..

Anyhoo - back to current reality - I'm obese :/ with a BMI at 31.0

claire0412 07-11-2011 02:23 PM

My BMI is 22.5 at the moment, which I am reasonably happy with. I think the highest I've ever got was 25.1, and then I left uni and the fat fell off naturally until I got a BMI of around 23. Since then I've had to work for it. I'd like to be about 21.5, about 65.5kg (144lbs on a 5'8 frame). This is the lowest I remember being a few years ago and I looked good! That time around it was due to a rough break up though, hopefully not this time!

I don't mind you asking questions at all. :) I was always pretty slender but was "skinny fat". I was not toned and had a higher body fat like almost 30% at one point! I do have a small frame (and built like a ruler!) so that does make a difference and my parents are thin too. I gained after having two kids and eating too much sugar.

Once I started exercising and paying attention to what I was actually eating the weight came off but my belly (pooch) stayed...until I started running. Cardio was definitely the missing puzzle piece in my personal equation, lol. I always resisted it but once I just buckled down and do it, I saw results almost immediately.

Me, tiny? That just about made my year, lol. But you seem pretty little yourself by your stats. You probably have way more muscle than me judging by your avatar. Keep going! :)

skinny fast 07-11-2011 04:18 PM

Is there a way to calculate your body fat percentage from home?

I agree with the rest, fitmom, you must look great right now :) ;)

And I'm like you, naturally small (tho I'm curvy) and can get skinny-fat easily. And it all started for me after I had my 2 kids as well! :dizzy: I've put on some nice muscle in the last month or so, so that is a plus.

They sell the skin-fold calipers at GNC for like $19.95. I bought one a few months ago. They are pretty accurate because I had mine done by a trainer friend of mine and it was only off by like .3 of a %. Granted, I don't obsess over it and honestly only check it like monthly to see any progress I've made. It's just a number and how you feel is most important IMO.

Ditto on the skinny fat. People are always like small people can't be fat. And I'm like, "yes, they can."

I've noticed some teeny-tiny biceps starting to emerge within the last few weeks too. My hubby pointed it out to me. I was so happy. Never had biceps before. EVER.

TheManekiNeko 07-11-2011 06:20 PM

My BMI at the moment is exactly 25.

I'd be interested in finding out my fat percentage. Wonder if it's within normal range or not.

skinny fast 07-11-2011 07:21 PM

But the body fat test, lol, where do you test it? Test my tummy & I'll be off the charts (including the bit of extra stretch out from the pregnancies). Test my arms and there's nearly nothing there... how does it work?

fitmom 07-11-2011 07:30 PM

It comes with instructions on where to test (i.e. pinch) and a chart that tells you what the numbers mean in terms of percentages. It's virtually fool-proof, lol. My nine-year old son was even able to do it.

SunnyJee 07-12-2011 03:39 AM

BMI is currently 22.3. Not great.

If I hit my goal of 110 lbs, I will have a BMI of 21.5.
But I doubt I will be satisfied at 110 lbs, so we'll go from there...

I'm now leaning towards 105 lbs. Excited about that number... :)

RudeImp 07-12-2011 04:18 AM

My current BMI 24.3
I want it to be near 20.

philana 07-12-2011 04:48 AM

I don't like my BMI, cus it says I'm overweight. And I must be - but I don't feel like it's THAT bad. Oh well, aim for a BMI of 20, but right now I'm at 26!

Magrat 07-12-2011 05:18 AM

Mine is 21.3. At my goal of 110 it would be 20.8. However getting to goal is beginning to seem like mission impossible, so this may be as good as it gets.

Hi fitmom, we have the same BMI and body fat percentage. I was at my goal weight very briefly last year but I was exercising 2-3 hours per day (not super hardcore, a lot was dance classes and tennis) 4-5 days per week. I don't have time for that anymore. If you don't mind my asking, how much time are you currently devoting to workouts?

You know I did notice from your stats that we are very similiar in height/weight, lol. Nice to meet you! :) Anyway, to answer your question: six days a week for about 30-45 minutes a day. I'm doing cardio (running), HIIT, kettlebells, Pilates and some core work. Sundays are my day off.

I'm lucky b/c I'm a stay-at-home mom and my kids aren't infants anymore. My hubby watches them in the mornings (he doesn't have a 9 to 5 job) so I can squeeze in my runs and HIIT then. In the evenings after they go to bed is when I do my kettlebells, Pilates and core work.

I'm also eating better which helps along with all the exercises as I'm sure you well know.

Wow, 2-3 hours a day. I wish I had that kind of time but not with two boys. I'm lucky I can squeeze in what little time I have.

That's what works for me. I hope this helps. Good luck.

carrieanne4 07-14-2011 11:03 AM

Im 5'0 and 126pounds so my BMI is 24.9 just got under the 25 this week which i was happy about doesnt show as overweight anymore. Would like it to be about 20 tho i think before i will be really happy.

inteventionn 07-14-2011 11:10 AM

i hate BMI usually becausee it doesnt take into account, bone structure, muscle mass, fat mass, overall general health. i know mine is normal so, whatever. as long as it doesnt go under normal!

I had a similar question ... ~118 lbs used to be my normal weight ... now I can't seem to get below 130/135 lbs. At least I am maintaining around 135 lbs instead of 140-something like it was a year ago! Every 5 lbs makes a HUGE difference. But it doesn't seem like losing 15-17 MORE lbs is within my reach, so I have had to accept that.

I am also very prone to "skinny fat" and high body fat %. I have been doing a lot of reading and have decided to stop focusing on the scale number and focus more on fitness, muscle tone and body fat %. Easier said than done.

My BMI at 135 lbs is 21.8. My current goal (129 lbs) would put me at 20.8.

I totally agree. It is a controversial measurement to begin with on an individual level, and once people are in the "normal" range it doesn't really yield any useful information (except maybe to indicate when someone's weight is approaching too low).

When I weighed 150 lbs, I was "normal" by BMI and "obese" by body fat %, according to the test I took at my gym.

It took me awhile to get below 125 lbs. Forever and a day, lol. I credit running with taking me over the hump. Literally the weight just fell off me, I'm not kidding. My stomach hasn't looked this toned since way before I had my first child almost a decade ago, lol. And I never thought it was possible considering the way it had been stretched out twice. I finally got on the bandwagon of no sugar or refined carbs and that helped as well. I'm not really focusing on the scale number anymore just the body fat like you. I think it's more important to be fit and healthy. Good luck. :)

mayness 07-14-2011 06:23 PM

Mine is 25.5... I don't really care about BMI but I am kinda excited to be out of the "overweight" category soon. :) My goal weight will put me at 21.

IsabellaOlivia 07-14-2011 06:41 PM

24.5. This week I finally made it out of the overweight BMI.

mkroyer 07-15-2011 12:31 PM

bmi IS WORTHLESS

MY bmi IS 24 BARELY in the normal range.... but my BF is approx 18% because i have an incredible amount of lean muscle mass, and i wear a size 2-4........ so dont put my stock in BMI girls, really......

fitmom 07-15-2011 05:54 PM

I agree with you mkroyer. My hubby's BMI is in the 'overweight category' but his doctor isn't worried b/c he's very muscular. He's short and stockily-built. My body fat is what I primarily go by as well. Although I have two sons and until they are 20 years old, the doctors go by BMI b/c kids body fat is constantly changing but adults are a different story altogether.

cantgetenoughchoc 07-15-2011 06:15 PM

My BMI is in the healthy range again (24.5), which obviously I'm pleased about, but at my goal I should be about 21.9, which I would be more than happy with. :)

RachelAnne 07-15-2011 06:22 PM

My BMI is at the very high end of normal, at 24.7 (135 lbs), which is great since I started off at overweight! At my first goal (120) my BMI will be at 21.9, which is around where I want it to be. I have a medium frame, so my BMI should be around 21-23 anyways

nikkinouille 07-15-2011 06:44 PM

24.6

Would like to get to 22.5 at the least.

Heleninedinburgh 07-16-2011 12:32 PM

22.6

would like to get it to 20

lower than that and I get cold the whole time

Michelle2008 07-22-2011 05:43 PM

So jealous of all these low BMIs!! Mine is currently just over 26. My mini goal is to get out of the overweight category. I would like to get to 23 - anything lower would be a real struggle (my f cups seem to stay around regardless of weight loss!)

Esofia 07-28-2011 11:18 AM

I dropped into the healthy BMI range this morning with 24.96! In another pound I'll be exactly halfway to goal, although I may revise my goal as I near it. The BMI ranges seem reasonable to me: I'm currently on the cusp of being overweight, and that's about how my body feels, while the middle to lower range of the BMI is nicely slim on me. The lower border of healthy weight is fairly thin, though, as I recall, possibly because I'm quite busty? I'm aiming for about 21, I was stable at that weight for a lot of my adult life.

banananutmuffin 07-29-2011 04:53 PM

22.8, but I'd like to get to 19. Like another poster, I'd be ok with a higher BMI if it meant more muscle.

lauralyn 07-29-2011 08:18 PM

My BMI is 21.4 and I would love to see 20 but I really do not see that happening.

yoyoma 07-29-2011 09:03 PM

I'm at 20. I've been this low and lower in recent years, but the stat I care most about at the moment is my wast-to-hip ratio, which I have just gotten into the healthy range for the first time in many years!

Precious Little 07-31-2011 12:48 AM

22.9

Haven't weighed myself this week though so this is based on last week's figures.

I am working on getting it down to 21 - 21.4.

Woohoo, lost more weight this week so now my BMI is 22.7!
