Planning & Chat for Oct. 8 - 14
Morning all!
How did the first week of October go? New plans working? Is everyone losing :D /maintaining :) /other ? And is anyone noticing that summer seems to have come back to the eastern part of North America? Dagmar :hat: |
Final countdown
It's almost vacation time. I'M SO EXCITED!!! I'll be leaving for NYC this time in one week. :woohoo:
There is that small matter of the 2 lbs. :o I'm up this weekend to deal with first. It is Thanksgiving up here and I have eaten a few "extras" over the last two days. I will do the usual - count calories, weigh stuff and write it all down. It works for me. I expect I'll be back down to 133 by next Monday. I look good, feel great, and hope that the weather co-operates so I can wear my new fall wardrobe. It's shorts and t-shirt weather down there right now but there is a cooling trend in the forecast :yay: Have a great week everyone! Dagmar  :dancer: (did I mention I'M so EXCITED!!!) |
Oooohhh, vacation? Nice. I'm jealous.
I hear you on the Thanksgiving weight gain. :o But I hope it was as worth it for you as it was for me. My parents came to visit me here in Victoria, so we didn't have the traditional turkey meal, but we did eat out quite a bit. ;) Plus I ran the Royal Victoria Marathon, 8k distance, and got a 43:10. That's only about 4mins slower than my personal best. So I'm pretty stocked about that because it shows that I'm slowly getting back into shape. :D Lucky you, getting summer again. We're stuck with fall here in Victoria. Although it looks like it's gonna be a fantastic day today. And the sun peaked out yesterday for the end of our run. :) I really need to get on track with eating. Especially since I have some tough weeks with exams coming up. I'm planning to make food and freeze it. Anyone have any suggestions? All I can think of is lasagna, but some variety would be nice. EDIT: getting summer, not supper again. jeese. hee hee. :P |
Hey girls  .... Weight gain?? OMG I literally gasped when I stepped on the scale this morning, it was up 10 freakin' pounds :fr: ...but then I weight myself again and it was off by 4 lbs, weighed a third time and it stayed the same, thank goodness... I'm still up 8 lbs, I can deal with that better than 10 ...
Since I started working I haven't exercised a quarter of what I did this summer when I was burning over 900 calories biking... I have gained 8# :faint: .... I have to get back in the midset of 1200 calories, I'll be ravenous for a couple of day I know that for a fact!! Well off to the gym... TTFN  |
Ilene - I will be joining you on the ravenous train.
After Thanksgiving dinner and a piece of DQ icecream cake....I am tipping the scales and feeling very plump. Plan in place: 1000-1200 calories/day Lower carbs More cardio Please send some willpower my way - I could really use it. -S |
Cat's tongue: I'm sure others will have some ideas, but I like to make up a big batch of spaghetti sauce (lean ground beef, onions, garlic, veggies, tomato products, spices) and freeze it in smaller batches. It's more versatile than lasagna, and better for you without all that cheese & pasta.
Many soups also freeze well, and are great comfort food as we head into the cooler seasons. Potatoes and pasta can get mushy, though, so I leave these out of soup that will be frozen. Another time-saver tip: freeze chicken breasts in a marinade, using a strong zip-log bag. By the time they're thawed out, the marinade will have done its trick, and they'll be much more interesting than plain chicken. When I'm super busy, especially in winter, I also rely a lot more than usual on frozen veggies. Yeah, fresh is better, but when you're too busy to get to the store and produce is expensive and/or doesn't look so fresh anyway, frozen is better than nothing. Good luck with the exams! Kim |
Good morning!
I'm planning a trip to NYC myself! DD and her Arts Institute class are going and she invited me to go as well (gasp!). They're planning to see a couple Broadway shows and museum outings and perhaps a concert (you know--artsy things!). It won't be until spring (but I imagine it will still be cold there at that time). My weight was way down 2 weeks ago and now it's back up again. It can be so discouraging! I'm going to try really hard to get it back down to "ticker" weight by Friday. Kim~soups. I have to remember soups. I love hot comfort food and soup can really do the trick, but I usually forget and head in the direction of casseroles instead. They can be dangerous! |
Ooohh, Kim, I like your ideas. Freezing sauce would probably be easier, I mean cooking up the noodles only takes like, 10 mins right?
Plus the frozen chicken in marinade is great. Only I'd use tofu since I'm a vegetarian. But I really like that idea. Hmmm, think I'll get on that one. :D Thanks. |
Hello from TO.
I am here visiting family and I don't even want to think about my weight. Let's put it to you this way.....yesterday I went to my stepfather's house for dinner at 3 and then I went to my Dad's house for dinner at 8. Today I am going to have dinner with my mother's family. Man of man.... 3 thanksgiving meals in one weekend. I feel the scale skyrocketing as we speak. To make matters worse I have done ZERO excercise since Saturday. Maybe I can talk my sister into going for a walk with me after dinner. |
Another vegetarian friendly idea: lentil stew. I make it thick enough so that I can use it "as is" as a filling in burritos. Leftovers get thinned down with broth or stock to a soup consistency. Two meals for the effort of one!
|
Lentil stew?! Oh man, that sounds delicious.
Do you have a recipe by chance? |
I made a large pot of turkey/veggie very little noodles soup this morning with turkey stock that I made last night from the turkey carcase... I love soups in the winter. I usually make a pot/week and have that before my meals to get my veggies in...

Well, my conference officially starts tomorrow. I have been onsite since yesterday (we have pre-conference events happening today and tomorrow). So forget losing or maintaining; I'll be gaining this week. After the conference is over, we are heading down to Joshua Tree to do some hiking for a couple of days.
Today I gave a presentation on accounting for stock compensation and I was completely on for it. My timing was perfect; I felt like my explanations were clear, concise, and to the point; the audience was awake and engaged; everyone laughed at my jokes; and they all got the quiz questions right which means they were paying attention. I love it when that happens. :cloud9: This is also the most organized I've ever been for our conference. Normally I would be frantically trying to finish up last minute stuff, but I have everything done. I almost don't know what to do with myself. I'm trying not to eat. :censored: hotel mini bars ! I went for a 6-mile run on Sunday and the good news is that the run was awesome. No cramping whatsover, which further confirms my theory that my cramps are due to heat (it was pretty darn chilly) and I had no problems keep my pace up. I felt great and finished in under an hour (59 min, 21 sec). The bad news is that I hurt my leg somehow. Shooting pains in my knee when I try to go down stairs (going up stairs is no problem). I wore a brace on it today and that definitely seemed to help. Hopefully it will feel better tomorrow. Cats--Vegetarian chili is super easy to make and it would freeze great. CookingLight.com has lots of recipes. I really like their Moroccan Chickpea Chili recipe, but they have more traditional chili recipes as well. I also really like their Tomato Chickpea Curry and I think it would freeze well. |
You are awesome as usual Barbara. Have some fun too!
I think any weight gain will be offset by the hiking in Joshua Tree, yes? I've seen photos of it and it looks fabulous. Dagmar :dancer: :yay: |
A recipe for lentil stew? Umm, well, let me see: a pinch of this, a handful of that...
Seriously, I'm not a recipe type of gal, except for baked goods and even then I've been known to modify / substitute / tinker. But, the basic idea is as follows: Lentil Stew 1-2 tbs. olive oil, butter, or vegetable oil 1 large onion, diced 2-5 cloves garlic, minced 1-2 carrots, diced 1-2 stalks celery, diced 1 med zucchini, diced (optional) 1 bell pepper, diced (optional) jalapeno pepper (optional) 1 c. frozen or canned corn (optional) 1.5 c. dry lentils (check 'em for little rocks & rinse) 2 c. liquid -- some combination of water or low-sodium veggie stock 1 can diced tomatoes (undrained) 1 med can tomato sauce 1 small can chipotle peppers (optional, don't use with jalapeno) 1 tsp.? cumin 1/2 tsp.? cayenne pepper 1/2 tsp.? oregano 1/2 tsp.? thyme (optional) 2 bay leaves (optional, use instead of cayenne pepper / jalapeno / chipotle if you want a less spicy stew) salt & pepper to taste Saute onions in fat until translucent. Add garlic and jalapeno (if using) and saute another 30 seconds or so. Add veggies and saute some more. Toss in lentils, about half of the stock/water, tomatoes, and spices. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the lentils are soft but not squishy, about 45 minutes. Use the other half of the stock/water during cooking to adjust the consistency as necessary. Salt and pepper to taste. This is good in burritos, over brown rice or tofu, with corn bread, or thinned into soup. Hmm, I think I'll make some ... Kim |
Morning darlings!

Afternoon Ms. Susan
Food is good so far... No exercise yet....maybe later... No news here  ... See yas later  |
I'm sitting here in my office, which is on a west-facing hill, watching fall arrive. The clouds that mark the leading edge of the cold front have arrived, darkening my normally bright office. The wind has picked up and is blowing the leaves off the trees. The lightening is flashing off in a distance. Mr. Weatherman tells us we'll be back to normal fall temperatures by the end of the week. Goodbye, summer, you had a good run of it.
My schedule has been thrown off today. After I took TB to the bus stop, I went to the grocery store to shop for an Oktoberfest party we're hosting this weekend. I've had fun trying to plan a menu that is healthy, vegetarian-friendly, kid-friendly, and still relatively traditional. I've decided on sauerbraten, beer-simmered bratwurst (or mock bratwrust) with sauerkraut, Bavarian potato salad, rotkohl (red cabbage with apple), dilled green beans, apple tart, linzertorte, soft pretzels, and gingerbread hearts for the kids. We'll see how much of this cooking I can actually accomplish by Saturday! Anyway, I missed my normal gym time, and had to go right after lunch before the gym closed at 2 because of the school holiday. It's not my favorite time to work out, and I didn't get there & changed until 1:20 so it was a shortie. But, at least I went, and I worked my shoulders so that they can be strong enough to lift all those beer steins! Here comes the rain! Kim |
Hey ladies
Thanks for the recipe Kim. It looks good. I understand not really using a recipe, they're more like guidelines anyway. ;) Sigh. Today is just one of those days I'm finding. Not so nice weather/school stressors/lonesome feelings are making me feel totally unmotivated to do anything. I'd love to just curl up and not wake up until I'm graduated with a degree in hand. So I'm on 3FC procrastinating as always. :D |
Speaking of recipes
I'm having a science experiment/leftovers stew thingie for dinner. No idea of the calorie count but I'm just using a bunch of stuff left over from thanksgiving - oven roasted squash, taters, and onions, - plus zucchini and BBQ chicken breast, plus a can of pureed pumpkin thinned with milk, and various spices that I think will work.
Saute the whole mess, add the pumpkin/milk mix, a chicken bouillon cube dissolved in cup of boiling water, and simmer for 30 minutes. It looks pretty gross but smells really good. Am not going to divulge recipe to DH - he's coming home late from class and will eat (almost) anything that's in fridge. I develop a lot of recipes from having leftovers and cans of stuff around. Most are quite healthy and not too caloric. Time to eat my chicken and pumpkin stew. Dagmar :dancer: :yay: |
Hi girls,
Just checking in. I just got home and have been feeling pretty miserable the last two days - severe PMS, which I usually don't suffer from much at all -- cramping and the whole nine yards. Must be perimenopause or something! Anyway, I'll write more later, but now I must eat. Oh, I have a delicious lentil recipe that I make frequently in the winter - it's a lentil tomatoe soup spiced with red wine and cloves... it may sound kind of odd, but it is absolutely delicious. I'll try to remember to post it next time I'm on here. |
Since August I have been working 2 part time jobs, one is about a 50 minute commute and the other is less than 2 minutes away... The 2 minute away school is in the next block job was posted and I was really, really, REALLY hoping to get it because it would be so close to home...Anyways, I didn't get it :tantrum: another lady got it, she had more seniority than me ...

I am going to be disgustingly cheerful this week :D. Not only am I going to the "magic kingdom" aka NYC in three days but my scale shows a drop back down to 133 lbs, 3 days ahead of schedule.
My "science experiment" last night was a success. DH gobbled down 2 bowls after he got home and didn't even notice there was squash in his "goop". He hates squash so I'm disguising it. We eat a lot of "goop" - veggie goop, chickpea goop, rice goop, etc. and it's easy to slip an extra ingredient in there. Using lots of cumin seed and turmeric helps too - I love middle eastern food and so does DH. Now if only there was alow cal version of hummus . . . SusanB How was your vacation? Dagmar :yay: |
Morning! We had a lovely vacation. Very relaxing. My great nephew is 7 mos old and so cute and fun.
There should be a law that you can't weigh yourself the day you get home. I got much better news this morning. I still haven't really got my ducks-in-a-row since coming home but I have to work this afternoon so I should get my backside back into some sort of routine. A good grocery run would help. |
Morning, everyone.
Not much to report. I lost 1.5 pounds by brushing my hair this morning. Almost makes up for the shock of a couple of months ago of gaining 1.5 pounds by putting in my contacts. It couldn't possibly be my scale, could it? Kim |
Hey All,
Back from TO. My weekend with the family was great. Although I have been home several times in the past few years it's been over 4 years since I was with my family at Thanksgiving. That of course is the rub. After 3 Thanksgiving dinners in 2 days accompanied by only 1 run...I am up 4 lbs again. (Insert big Sigh) I am not going to get depressed about it though. I am just going to get back on track. Today's our anniversary. We have been married for 3 years. The sad part is that DH seems to have forgotten. I hesitate to say anything because I really don't want to get into an arguement. So as it stands so far I have spent the day doing some much needed cleaning. How is it possible for men to live in a pig stye and not even care. Don't get me wrong he does the basics like his laundry and the dishes most of the time. Although occasionally I will return from a trip and find the sink over flowing. Anyways he doesn't seem to go past the basics like cleaning the bathroom or sweeping the floor. All that is left up to me. If I don't do it...it doesn't get done. He refuses to get a housekeeper as he says this is something we can handle on our own and it will take time for us to get organized yet I am the one going crazy. There is so much dust in our house it's insane and with all the travelling I can barely keep up. BTW, does anyone have a suggestion for handling the mounds of paper that seems to come in the mail? The majority of our bills are electronic and I have added us to the do not mail lists but we still get all this crap. I am sorry for sounding like a complainer. I had such a lovely time this weekend and then I came back to reality which is 4 lbs up, a messy house and a forgotten anniversary. |
Good morning everyone!
Kim, that weather sounds cold! My parents said that it has snowed twice already this year where they live (SLC, UT). I'm just happy that the temperature is a lot lower than the summer temperatures. AND, if your contacts weigh 1.5 pounds, I sure hope that my glasses weigh 4 pounds!!!! My scale has been up all week by 4 pounds and I have the munchies today. Geans~sorry that your DH seems to have forgotten your anniversary. But perhaps he'll remember and surprise you tonight! Gotta run--work calls. |

We now have housecleaners.

Then I stopped because I realized he was leaving everything for me. He ran out of dishes several times and then started washing them. Ditto laundry. Nothing like having to wear dirty socks and underwear to work to remind him to do his wash. They're remarkably like dogs - trainable but with constant reinforcement and reward being required. ;) Dagmar (dirty house next week but I'm in NYC so WHO CARES???) :yay: :yay: |
Hi girls,
Geans, I'm so sorry to hear about your day... don't worry about complaining. I think I would be bummed out, especially about the anniversary. I wouldn't be able to let it go either, and yes, it would turn into a fight. I hope like Allison said that maybe he is planning to surprise you tonight. Let us know. As far as the messy house... I have a confession. I am the typical husband as far as that goes. I am the one with the higher dirt tolerance and DH does get annoyed with me. He lays it on me about 1x a month how he has to do more than his share of the cleaning. 90% of the time, it works out ok, as I do make up for lack of cleaning by doing majority of groceries and food prep, all finances, most of laundry, and of course, I do clean. But he does the heavy cleaning, like mopping and vacuuming. I also relate more to the husbands when my friends gripe about their husbands not cleaning house. Dagmar - yes, I have noticed we are both SLOW and steady. I've been a real rut - not doing much exercise except for weekends - since going back to work/school. This needs to change, I know. So while my weight has inched down, I am feeling more soft and flabby than I have in a long time. Again, THiS MUST CHANGE. I'm sure NYC will be a blast. My fav food to eat in the city is always Indian. My friend who lives in Manhattan who I visit there always takes us to her fav little Indian place. It is divine, so cheap, and has tons of character. As a matter of fact I was in NYC last year on the same weekend you are going. One of my best friends (lives in Idaho) has a bday Oct 14 - we flew in and met and stayed with our mutual friend in Manhattan. We did the Indian restaurant for her birthday and had such a good time! I'll post the lentil recipe but probably not till this weekend. Energy is really flagging this week - I believe I mistakenly attributed all my symptoms to PMS, while actually I think I have some type of bug. I'm achy and sore from head to toe and very very tired. Hope everyone had a good day... Geans, let us know how yours turned out. |
Claire Hope you're feeling better soon.
Could you post the name of the Indian restaurant in Manhattan? I always prefer "friend" reviews to professional ones. Dagmar :yay: :yay: :yay: |
Good morning Featherweights!
While I'm not at that weight over there <<<, I am back under goal since coming home from vacation. Just think how unhealthy that flubber must be. I wonder what my BP is when I'm eating jambalaya etc??? Reminds me of Morgan Spurlock. Ew! By looking at my kitchen this morning, you'd think nobody does any cleaning around here ;) |
Since DH and I share our home with two teenagers and two dogs, we're forever cleaning something!
Each day, I clean off the kitchen counters before and after cooking, clean the table before we eat, clean up the dirty dishes and put them in the dishwasher (I refuse to hand wash!!). We do 8+ loads of laundry per week. I sweep the tile at least once a week. We wipe down the shower daily and I wipe down the bathroom counters several times a week. And then the housekeepers come and do a full top to bottom cleaning. There is no way I have time to do that! They come every 2 weeks and the team (1 to 3 of them) are there for at least 3 hours. DH seems to be enjoying going with me for my morning run. He's gone twice now and no complaints!! He said he liked seeing all the stars. I feel just a bit safer with him out there with me, except of course we don't run together (yet). If he keeps it up, he'll be able to run with me in about 5 weeks. Scary. There was a lockdown at a local high school this morning. Apparently a student saw a former student on campus and said he had a gun. The police put the school on lockdown for over 2 hours. They did arrest someone, but have yet to find a weapon. |
G'day girls  ...
I've had a decent food day today, stayed under 1300 calories... which is good  ... Allison --- School lock down what is this world coming too? ... I haven't decided yet whether I am going to the gym tonight or not... It's so rainy and dreary out ... One good thing about going back to working part time is that I'll have more day time to go to the gym... YAY for that  ... |
Hi girls,
Nothing too eventful today... still feeling virus-y or something. I'm not sure what I have going on, but I am definitely under the weather. I'm feeling very weak and have not exercised since Sunday. I hope to be back to normal soon. Dagmar - let me get in touch with my girlfriend, and I'll post the restaurant and it's location. She lives right on 6th Ave not too far from Radio City, but the restaurant is actually not terribly close to her place. We always get there by subway, so I'll have to ask her. Hope everyone is having a good day! |
Hi Everyone!
I know I've disappeared for a week or so...I'm down to the last two weeks of experiments for my thesis, and things are getting crazy!!! So I've decided that I want to start writing down everything that I eat, and counting calories. I know that some of you here have had success with that! Does anybody have any suggestions about how many calories that I should aim for? My activity levels for the next two weeks are probably going to be limited to my once weekly yoga class, and 40 minutes of walking per day. Feel Better Claire, and Enjoy your vacation Dagmar!! |
I'm almost gone!!!
Hey Nic! You and I are about the same size and bone structure (from your photo you look to be a "medium" build) and I did the writing down/counting calories thing with 1400 calories per day. Of course my activity level was about 5 hours of walking/wrestling/running and all else I do with the dogs. Why don't you try 1200 cals for a week and see if you lose or not? Adjust from there?
Have a terrific week next week everyone - I'm leavin' on a jet plane for da BIG APPLE - WHOOOHOOO!!! Dagmar :yay: :yay: :yay: (lady, step away from those smilies!) |
Hello everyone!
How goes it? Thanks god it's friday right? :D So I definitely made a big batch of pasta sauce and froze them. :) Also froze individual serving sizes of tofu marinated. This weekend I'm going to make a couple batches of healthy muffins to freeze and some lentil stew. I have to go out and get some lentils though, it might be hard to make the stew without them. allison - School lockdown? Scary. But that's nice that your husband has started running with you. steibana - I just started recording calories too! I'm not aiming for a particular amount yet. I'm trying to keep it between 1500-1800, but since I'm just starting with cal counting I'd like to see what I'm sort of eating now... and then reduce... Good luck with it though. Well ladies I must run. Go for an actually run before Friday night activities begin. |
