First Place

:welcome: to
First Place
The Bible Based Weight Loss plan Used Successfuly by over 1/2 million people

In order to get a 'handle' on this wonderful program, please look into getting the book 'First Place' by Carole Lewis. It is an easy read and outlines the complete program.

The First Place Program includes a series of 9 commitments which are:

1) Attendance: Attending a meeting for a period of 13 weeks.

2) Encouragement: Make a commitment to reach out to another person doing the program every week

3) Prayer: Learning to pray every day at the same time, will help you keep Christ in first place.

4) Bible Reading: This commitment is essential for spiritual growth

5) Scripture memory verse: In this program we memorize a Scripture verse each week. God's Word in your heart will strengthen your daily life and spiritual relationship

6) Bible Study: First Place offers a number of studies that are 10 weeks long - they are not intense but will help build your spiritual fitness as you build our physical fitness.

7) Live-It Plan: Through this commitment, you learn balanced eatng habits. The food exchange lists for this program are similar to one recommended by the american Diabetic Association.

8) Commitment Record: This is where you keep a record for 7 days of food eaten; you also check of daily the following that you did: prayer / Bible Study / Scripture Reading / Memory Verse / Encouragement / Exercise: Aerobic - Stength - Flexibility

9) Exercise: This commitment is based on 1 Corinthians 3:16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit livis in you?

So come all that would like to grow in their faith and lose some weight

Having read the Welcome page

I would like to comment on how we could make this program work for us here:

The 9 Commitments are a biggy in this program. So could we do this program together for '13 weeks' using all 9 commitments. I think so.

1) Attendance - well we won't be meeting as a group weekly - but all that come here could follow this commitment by posting here one day a week for sure - and more would be better.

2) Encouragement - I don't see that as a problem here as I belong to a few of the other 'threads' and the encouragement is great -

3) Prayer - don't see that as a problem either - I believe that all of us talk to our Savior regularly - we might need a little bit of encouragement some days to put Christ in First Place - starting off our day with Him first - but we do pray - and we hold up each other in prayer which is great

4) Bible Reading - this could be difficult - don't want to be negative but I know for myself sometimes after I am up and 'running' the idea of taking time to sit for 15 minutes and read the Bible really doesn't enter my mind - but it sure does when things go wrong. So this is one that I know I work on each day making it a point to take a book of the Bible and read through it - allowing myself up to 15 minutes of 'just reading'

5) Scripture Memory Verse - now I must say this is a difficult one for me - I know I could do it but haven't since I was a child. I happen to have 3 of the First Place Bible Studies which come with a CD of all the verses outlined in the study set to music - makes a good way to learn the scripture as well as an aid for exercise time. On saying that if someone did not actually do the First Place Studies, they could set a Scripture verse to learn each week - or as a group we could set one for us all to work on together here at 3FATCHICKS

6) Bible Study - I know most of us are so busy with our families and things we do for our church ect - another Study - :dizzy: but it could be worked in - just for 10 weeks.

7) Live It Plan - this is another biggy. When I put this plan out on the table besides the Diabetic Plan and even Weight Watchers I must say they looked pretty close to me - all well balanced.

8) Commitment Record - this is another big one - at group meeting for First Place you would hand in this record to the person that was leading the class. I think for us here if we woudl make use of the commitment record and then being accountable when you do the 'attendence commitment' just let the group know whether you were able to complete all on your chart.

9) Exercise - this has been a problem for me - I am not active enough and that is most of my problem - that and just plain having to much of the good stuff put into my mouth. So I find that having to be accountable for my exercise - at least until it becomes a habit is good.

So what do you think - it is a new month - we can do it - and the discussions / encouragements / would be great.

On saying all of the above I would like to share one Scripture Verse here:

Hebrews 10:25
Let us not give up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

If interested in doing a Bible Study

If you are interested in doing a Study together I would like to suggest the one called

Everyday Victory for Everyday People

You can find this at your local Christian book store, at the First Place web site and I am sure you can find it elsewhere on the internet also.

I have this study and am going to be starting it myself tomorrow - March 2 -
and I will be glad to share some of the questions / thoughts as I go through it.

RebaR 03-01-2006 10:33 PM

Sounds great... :carrot: you can find the bible studies at different places, like amazon.com at cheaper prices... I'll try to remember the other sites I know. I've previously led a local group and I tend to use a local Christian bookstore- the owner is a friend and goes to our church... I am currently in "Choosing Thankfulness" but I have "Everyday Victories for Everyday People". I've done it before...

Hi Reba

Thanks for your post - as I mentioned I have 3 of the studies and hopefully eventually will get them all - think they are great.

What do you think about the commitments - difficult to do? Do you think we can modify it somewhat for here - what about group questions?

RebaR 03-01-2006 10:53 PM

Which commitment(s) are difficult for me??:dizzy: in all honesty, that varies from time to time...I've been doing First Place off and on since 1989 or so....

right now, the exercise isn't too hard- I'm taking a water aerobics class that meets 2x a week for an hour each time. My doc told me to get in a minimum of 150 minutes a week, but I have a goal of 180 minutes or more a week... and it hasn't been too bad... it's getting into the habit of it!

The hardest for me right now are the spiritual components... for the last few weeks I've not been doing my Bible study, and reading... My memory verse is the verse for the week of the bible study. Prayer- lately they've been the quickies - though sometimes I journal them. For several reasons, February is a difficult time for me and Satan has been attacking in some areas... and rather than draw me closer, I've just kinda quit... I did find my Bible study book last night... and looked at the day I'm on... now I need to do it... this has also been a busy month for me...I've traveled the last 3 weekends... Atlanta for the ballet and art museum, then a chaperone on the youth retreat...then Birmingham for the Living Proof Beth Moore conference....

I am also involved with another online First Place group and through them have a CR that's on my computer... with that group, to meet the CR commitment, CR's are submitted online or mailed to a group leader (I'm a co leader with one of the groups). The attendance commitment is met by sending in the CR and posting at least once a week. Encouragement by posting or emailing or snail mailing a member of the group.

The Live it is basically the diabetic diet...only we don't call it a diet because it is a healthy way of eating for our lifetime. It encourages eating in all the food groups. Sometimes I have a hard time getting in the fruits, veggies and milks.... for some reason, the meat, breads and fats are no problem!:o

Group questions could be posted and answered... one good thing about an online group, you can come online at any time for support... a regular group meets once a week...

Can it be done online? yes it can!

Checkin in for March 2

Day is just getting underway - am up, showered, clothes separated and ready for the washer, trying to get my teen daughter out of bed and into the bath so that I can start the laundry.

When the laundry is started I will be putting on my WATPS CD and do the 1 mile one. Then I am going to spend 30 minutes reading scripture, answering some Bible Questions and praying. Then the day starts with schooling my daughter.

I will see about coming back later in the day and posting some questions / comments re the Bible Study I am workng, and 'reporting' re my commitment record.

Reba: I must admit that the committments you mentioned that were difficult sure can be. Guess it all boils down to discipline. How about sharing what you are learning in the study you are doing, and how about some thoughts on what your menu for the day looks like. Sharing of good recipes is also nice.

Memory Verse for week of March 2 - March 8 2006

Let's see if we can memorize the same verse together each week. Here is for this week

Memory Verse for week of
March 2 to March 8, 2006
Matthew 4:4 It is written, 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'

Comments fromthe First Place book

Having read the First Place book a number of times I would like to share the following from it as I thought it was worth noting. So here goes the quote.

Page 15
To help us sort through the confusion surroundng weight loss, we turned to Dr. Dick Couey, a professor of health science at Baylor University and a physiologiest who has studied nutrition and how it relates to the biochemistry of the cell. On a regular basis, Dr. Couey gives his opinion about the safety or effectiveness of certaindiets. His criteria for a good diet includes the following:

1. The diet must contain 45 known nutriets in their proper amounts. It must contain enough carbohydrate, fat and protein (especially nitrogen); 9 amino acids; 13 vitamins; 19 minerals, and sufficient amounts of water.

2. The diet should contain at least 1,200 calories per day. Caloric consumption below 1,200 could possibly cause damage to your body ad permanentl lower its basal metabolism.

3. The diet should emphasize behavior modification techniques to overcome poor eating habits or problem eating. It should also stress ways to make lifestyle changes in order to facilitate weight maintenance and thwart further weight gain.

4. The diet should not only stress good eating practices but also emphasize regular physical activit, sress reduction and other healthy changes in lifestyle. In addition, Dr. Couey recommends a Christian emphase to help motivate participants to properly care for their bodies.

'Be careful about choosing other nutrional programs' concludes Dr. Couey,. 'Many of these programs are designed to help you lose weight; however, they may lacke the proper amounts of nutrients which can damage the health of the cells.'

Page 16

Dr. Couey includes a caution about selecting a diet program:

Fat diets usually don't work because they are not designed for permanent weight loss. Habits are not changed, andthe food selecton is so limited that the person cannot follow the diet for more tha two or three weeks. Although dieters assume they have lost fat, they have actually lost mostly muscle and other lean tissue mass. In a matter of weeks, most of the lost weight is back. The dieter appears to have failed, when actually the diet failed. The whole scenario can add more blame and guilt to the psyche of the dieter, which is very unfortunate.

sprout 03-02-2006 12:14 PM

Note on some food items

Bread group: remember this group does not just include bread. In this group are bread, cereal, rice, pasta, potatoes, corn and peas. Do watch when you eat a serving of these that you check off the proper box on your commitment record.

Meat and fat: Peanut butter falls in the meat and fat category so if you have this to eat check off the appropriate in both places.

bmlath4379 03-02-2006 01:08 PM

Something that I would like to mention about First Place is that if you don't want to go off and bye the book (the actual program, not the Bible Study). You could just get the Food exchange pocket guide to begin with to see how everything works, but eventually if you decide to stick with the program you should really get the First Place book by Carol Lewis. But to start out with the pocket guide is really helpful.

First Place Programs

The First Place Programs is done in a group go for 13 weeks. I thought that since we are 'doing this online' lets do it for periods of 3 months .

So as this thread was started re March 1 - this 'session' will go till end of May - at that time we will reflect to see how we have done. Then we will start another 'session.'

sprout 03-03-2006 03:48 PM

Any words of advice guys?

Anyone have any words of 'advice' that they would like to share - food tips, exercise tips, something they learned from Bible Studies? -

bmlath4379 - good suggestion about getting the Food exchange pocket guide to start - that is a good start. And for those that have the complete program anyone can ask for help re what food goes where and how much ect.

Reba - how are you doing - am praying that you are still with us!

Want to share another quote from the First Place book by Carole Lewis. When I first read this it really struck me - I have since printed it out and reflect on it regularly

Page 26-27 of First Place
Many years earlier, I had given my life to Jesus Christ and I called Him Lord, but in reality, I had no idea how to let God be the Lod of my life. How could I give my life to God when I had been running it on my own for so many years? God was to answer my questiona a couple of weeks later when our pastor, Dr. John Bisagno, preached a sermon on the will. He said,
YOU MIGHT BE HERE THIS MORNING AND YOU KNOW GOD WANTS TO CHANGE YOUR WILL. GOD WILL NOT COME INAND WORK ON YOUR WILL WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION. IF YOU WILL JUST PRAY THIS PRAYER THIS MORNING: 'LORD, I'M NOT WILLING, BUT I'M WILLING TO BE MADE WILLING,' THEN GOD WIL HAVE PERMISSION TO WORK ON YOUR WILL.

I don't know how often I have turned and prayed that prayer - and I know the Lord is working in me now

sprout 03-03-2006 03:52 PM

Question for today March 3, 2006

Here is a question for today:

What about your will? Are you willing to be willing?

What is the proper motivation for lifestyle choices and habits? What are improper motivations and how do we overcome them?

sprout 03-03-2006 06:13 PM

Just thought of something

Please make note of your weight when you start the program - otherwise we won't know how you have done at the end of the 12 weeks period! !

Sprout,
I'm still around...just been crazy the last day or so...I went to a friend's house for dinner and all tonight and didn't get home until late... The last couple of days I've been off on my exchanges... I'll try to get my CR posted over the weekend...

Looking at your CR (it's the leader in me...:p ) I have a couple of questions and comments... what calorie level are you on?? it doesn't look like you are getting enough...if we eat too little our bodies think we are trying to starve it and it will slow down the ol' metabolism... how much pnut butter did you have?? 1 Tablespoon counts as 1 meat and 1 fat, 1 teaspoon counts as one fat.... on your mac and cheese.... did you make it? cheese can be counted as milk or meat, but you have to watch the fat content... those are just a couple of things I noticed as I looked at what you posted... like I said... it's the leader in me... i've lead a local group for over 3 years (and may start it back soon) and also am a co leader in another online group.....so it's habit to check how it's being counted... :hun:

you are doing great in getting started in those commitments!! :cheer:

Reba - - -

Thanks for your comments re my commitment record. It is always helpful to have someone look it over and point out things that we might have missed.

Exchange level; I should be followig the 1500 one. I know that when you add it up I have not had enough - just not getting in enough of all of the groups will make it low. To maintain the weight I am at I eat much more than 1500 calories but when I go to lose the weigh I seem to have trouble putting it together to get enough - does that make sense? Think it is because when I am not 'taking care' I consume more junk and a lot of empty calories.

Peanut butter: I was aware of the meat and fat exchange on it. I have always counted it that way when I eat it. When I do have peanut butter I use those individual packets - 1 packet per slice.

Jam - how do you mark it - what category?

Macaroni & Cheese - I make it myself - and I mark the cheese as dairy and fat. This is a food that I try to avoid as I tend to overeat it - I classify it as 'junk food' - quick to cook and quick to eat

I need to take time and plan my meal the night before making sure I get enough from all groups - when I do that I seem to do better.

Portion control / proper balance of all groups / exercise / water = a slimmer me. Of course I must say that I have to include my Savior in there also but when it comes just to the physical part of the program that is what I need to do - and it seems so difficult at time.

But I am giving it a good try - praying for good results during this 12 week program - would like to have 'shed' 15 - 20 pounds is not even 30 pounds - but will take what ever I get - the harder I work at all that I have to do the more of it I will lose.

sprout 03-04-2006 01:06 PM

Some Scriptures to think about / share thoughts on

I have started working on the Everyday Victory for Everyday People and wanted to share the Scriptures mentioned in Week 1 Day 1 as I would like to hear what others get from these verses.

Deuteronomy 30:11
Now what I am commanding yo today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.

Romans 12:1
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as livng sacrifices, holy and pleasng to God - this is your spiritual act of worship

Matthew 6:33
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.

Numbers 11:23
The Lord answered Moses, 'Is the Lord's arm too short? You will now see whether or not what I saw will come true for you

RebaR 03-04-2006 06:48 PM

Sprout,

I was asking about the peanut butter because on one of the days you said pnut butter, but did not have any meat exchanges down...;) jam... I try to use the all fruit type things... and count it toward my free foods for the day. We are allowed 50 calories a day for "free" foods- I use this for things like a small amount of ff dressing, jellies, a little coffee creamer etc.... Just have to watch it so I don't go over the 50 calories...:( and if I have something with sugar, I just write it down so i can track it, but don't try to count it...because the sugar offers no nutrition....

Deuteronomy 30:11
Now what I am commanding yo today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.

this is a great reminder as we begin again or for some start First Place for the first time... sometimes it can feel overwhelming to get in the commitments!

Checking in for March 7, 2006

Am tired, have not been feeling too well for the last few days - to much stress going on. But getting better.

Have not posted my food plan for a couple of days - will start again with today's after I have had supper. But have been doing pretty good. Scale looks like it is starting to move in the right direction.

Reba - your food plan look good. How are you doing on the other part of the commitments - devotional and all. Have you weighed your self lately?

Well, stomach is acting up so am going to go and lay down for a bit to get it settled down before going out tonight to watch 'Elvis, Kurt Browning and others ' figure skate.

Sprout and Reba:

Yay for you both! I have been curious about the First Place Studies and you both give great reviews. I have seen them all offered at great prices at Christian Book .com.

My life is also hectic with hubby starting a new job and being a SAHM to a 2YO, but I hope I can join in soon. I am a very shy person, so online support is perfect for me.

I began a cleanse from the health food store on Feb 24 to try and kick start my diet, but then had to go out of town last weekend and put back on 6 pounds in 3 days! :o I find myself going to extremes between no carbs and smorgasbord. I have recently added exercise to my too frequent fad diets, so hopefully that will help bring some real results.

I look forward to reading more of your progress. You are both very inspiring. Keep up the great posts. Thanks

RebaR 03-07-2006 10:40 PM

Sprout, hope you are feeling better today. Praying for you.

Martha, good to see you around. First Place is a great program. My history with it goes WAAAYYYYY back... 15+ years.... Feel free to ask questions etc.

Sprout,
to answer your questions... I weigh every Sunday at church- we have doctor scales there and we use them when we have FP group going. I've gotten in the habit of using those for the consistency. Yesterday was actually the first time I had done my Bible study in a couple of weeks... I plan on doing it again tonight before bed.

Checking in for March 9, 2006

Sorry about not being 'here' for a couple of days - stomache problems - stress related - and just plain busy trying to get house ready to sell.

Anyway, as you can see from my ticker I am down 2 pounds. Actually am down 4 - but the 2 pounds is from my weight at the beginning of the year.

Watched 'The Biggest Loser' the other night and have come to the conclusion that my biggest problem is that I am not active enough so I am making a plan to make sure I get in 60 minutes of walking each day min. and see how that goes. Hopefully it will help give me a jump start with the weight.

Haven't posted my food plan for a few days and I need to get back doing that - help a lot with keeping on track. So will start that up again with tomorrows food. As for the 'other commitments' am not doing to bad with them - so overall feeling not to bad.

Still working on the study Everyday Victory for Everyday People - will post thoughts / questions / scripture verses as I go along.

Scripture verse for today is:

Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. Deuteronomy 30:11

Hello!

Hello?? :?: Anybody out there? How are you doing?? How is your week going?? Keep us posted!

For me, it was a normal Wednesday... work, church... I did skip choir tonight because I needed to run to Walmart and I hate getting there late....

This may sound crazy, but tonight Theresa and I said no to something and I'm proud of us! We have revival coming up soon (March 26- 29) and we were asked to take care of the 3 - 5 year olds one night.... could we do it? yes? Do we feel God is asking us too? No... we are so actively involved with so many ministries at our church that we felt like this was a no time.... There are many that aren't involved on a regular basis... and this could be a good time for them to be involved.... as Theresa said... we want to be adults this time... we love teaching GAs on Wednesdays... but once in a while we need to be with the grown ups....

I have a confession too... I haven't been doing so great on my spiritual commitments for over a month... it started back in February.... to show you how far behind I am... I'm in week 4 of the bible study....BUT.... I have done it 2 nights this week so far and plan on doing it before bed again tonight....

Checkin in

Reba I do agree it is quiet in here - so guess we will have to become more 'active' ourselves right ;)

I agree with you that sometimes we have to say no to Church activities and let someone else help out.

As for keeping all the commitments, must say I have fallen aside somewhat myself. But that does not mean I can't / won't get back on track.

So what are my goals for tomorrow March 16, 2006
a) 4 bottles of water (which is 8 glasses)

b) 45 minutes of exercise (I walk in place to music and /or TV). I don't watch much tv but have decided that if there is a show which is 1 hour that for 30 minutes of it I have to walk in place. So that should help.

c) tomorrow I will get in 2 pieces of fruit and 2 servings of veggs.

d) devotions / Bible Study / Scripture Reading / Praying are a must for me - but must admit that I have fallen behind in my Bible Study so tomorrow I will take time to do a lesson there also.

Ok, so that is where I am at - anyone else out there following this plan or looking at it - please come and join us in sharing how we are doing.

Doing well

Am doing well.

We have all the living room and kitchen now primed - and this weekend will put on the 'good color' - then we will be ready for the hardwood floors.

With following this program - having a bit of trouble - the food plan is great but the part I am having difficulty with at the moment is the exercise. Need to work on that.

Also am looking at building my web site. Hopefully there is no problem with posting a link to it here.

I can hear daughter and sounds like she needs some attention - music is gettng a bit to loud!

Will come back in a bit and update on how the plan is working for me.

Do I have to?? Do I have to report in today?? :( :?:

Today has not been a good day, :dizzy: Live it wise.... it was Melissa's (the teacher I work with) birthday.... one of the kids brought donuts for her birthday...we had lunch out... ice cream with the kids... then some of the other teachers brought cheesecake, chicken dip and crackers...... and as if that wasn't enough.... it was ladies night out with church.... UUGGGHHHHHH..... :ink: :barf: :ink: too much junk today... I was too bad to even begin to count it.... :ink: :barf:

one good thing.... i went to water aerobics... :carrot: I was late to the ladies fellowship, went with wet hair ... after aerobics.... (now... just so the image isn't totally crazy.... I don't dunk my head usually, so it was the ends wet....).....

well, there's my report...

Hey Y'all,

I'm not sure anyone is even reading this since there have been no posts since my last one...:(

I have gotten basically back on track since Thursday's food frenzy, but not perfectly... I helped a friend with an art show this weekend...so there were a few things off plan, but portion wise was ok....

it's spring break for our schools here so I'm off for the week. Will be leaving on Wednesday to go camping until Sunday! Woohoo!! can't wait...will get in exercise through hikes...

I'm reading them!

Reba I think it is just the two of us in here - and I must apologize for not posting more often. That is not nice of me at all.

We have been trying to get our house ready for sale and with all of that, plus preparing to have our closest friends move away  - they leave on Monday - I just have not been around here. Add homeschooling my daughter does not help either.

Anyway enough of the excuses.

I have fallen behind in my Bible study but am going to get one day's worth of it done today - for sure.

I have not been doing the best with the eating program or the exercise. But have started up the walking again today. Walked 1 mile with hubby day, and I also got out the pedometer to count my steps - so far 2, 048 I have recorded and am looking to record 4,000 today so I can add another mile to my walking chart making for a total of 15 miles.

Food wise I need to start charting it again - so will start putting it up here again -

So let's do this - I know we can - it is a good program -

Hello Ladies. I just wanted to say that I have enjoyed reading this thread and will enjoy checking back into see your progress. Your motivation and dedication and the Bible verses are very inspiring.

I have recently ordered Scale Down that another member suggested. I hope to receive it shortly.

Please keep posting as I am finding your posts so very helpful. The food diary's are extemely helpful to me as I think I might actually be able to follow it.

Good luck to everyone.

It's been a few days

Thought I should check in.
Have started up walking and have been doing not to bad - keeping a record of just how many steps/miles I have walked.
Have found that I do 2000 steps for 1 mile.

As of today March 23 - 18 miles walked this year. Long ways to go yet though - looking forward to the first 100 under my belt.

Food plan is going ok - have been journaling it - will have to start putting it up here again - but I have been doing this for 3 days now - it does help. Have been keeping in my range which is good.

Have been doing my Scripture reading and praying daily but have fallen behind on the Bible study - would like to do 2 days worth of it tomorrow - that is my goal anyway - will let you know if I succeed.

Big thing for me right now is not to focus on what the scale says but to focus on keeping with the healthy food plan with proper portion sizes - and of course the exercise - am slowly increasing that every day by 500 steps - so eventually the scale will show a lose.

Will be going grocery shopping on Saturday. On another site that I belong to (a good site that offers a lot of help with professional people - dietition and personal trainer) it was suggested that for 7 to 14 days to purchase prepared frozen meals for supper - such as lean cuisine. I was told that this should only be done on a short term basis - up to 14 days - so that I can get a better handle on what a proper portioned supper would look like. So I am planing to get these meals on Saturday - will be interested to see how the scale looks after 14 days of using them - all I have to add to them is a salad, and of course fruit.

Anyway that is where I am at today - looking forward to a couple of good days and praying that the ugly scale will not be holding on to too much weight but will release some of it when I officially get weighed.

Matthew 6;33
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
