They'll put you on a treadmill and videotape you walking and running to determine the correct shoes for you. I hurt my foot by wearing shoes that corrected for pronation, which it turns out I didn't have - I was clueless when I bought them (I also need a bigger size than I thought). They took the time to make sure I had exactly the right shoes and it makes all the difference in the world.
