good luck tomorrow!

not sure where brownwood is, but here in houston, the rain is to be bad this afternoon and tonight, and out of here by tomorrow morning. however the winds and cold will be here.

YP1 02-10-2006 02:15 PM

Good luck! I ran a FANTASTIC 10k this morning in 54:44 - my previous fastest was over 57 minutes, so I'm over the moon to get so much faster. The half marathon training is really paying off!

WaterRat 02-10-2006 03:11 PM

Well done, Helen :bravo:

I've been neglecting my cardio this week, but plan to get back on track tomorrow morning.

lizzbabe 02-10-2006 06:58 PM

Way to go Helen! That is a great time.

As far as the weather report, it looks to be dry but pretty cold AND we'll have to leave around 5:30am to get to the race since we're not exactly sure where it's at. Oh well at least I don't have to drive! And since I'm a northerner at heart I really shouldn't worry about the cold but I run best in shorts and tank tops so we will see about that.

June, Brownwood is about 5-6 hrs north of Houston. I have family in the Woodlands that I go visit sometimes...did a race there at Thanksgiving actually.

lizzbabe 02-11-2006 07:53 PM

Race went ok--finished in 26min due to heavy winds against us runner. Brrr was it cold!

Anyway I had a question--for those of you who run with gloves in the cold do you have any recommendations? My hands are always freezing but I didn't know if they made special coolmax running gloves or if that was just a silly thought.

Only Me 02-11-2006 11:15 PM

Great times Liz and Helen!

I just wear the cheap stretchy gloves that you can buy anywhere, but you can buy thin gloves for running too. When it's super cold I wear some wool gloves over those, but you don't have to worry about that in Texas.

I took advantage of the sun today and did my long run in the afternoon. 18k in the sun was wonderful. The -11C/13F temperatures were a bit chilly, but at least there wasn't too much wind.

3fcuser1058250 02-12-2006 01:52 PM

I did a 7.85k this morning and it was great... Same temperature as you OnlyMe, -11C/13F, the sun was shinning it was good...

They do have CoolMax type gloves and I love mine... When it gets really cold I wear some windbreaking mitts on top of them and I am warm as toast, ofen too hot, I had to take the mitts off the other day and it was -16C out ... Lizz you have NO idea what cold is do you? You southerners who live in warm weather year round crack me up...

lizzbabe 02-12-2006 02:08 PM

Hey I paid my dues living in Maine 18 years and Vermont 4 years....I just have really bad circulation so I'm thinking running in shorts and a T-shirt but covering my hands with gloves lol.

JustJuneBug 02-12-2006 02:39 PM

i am in houston and sure needed gloves this morning on my run!!! holy heck it was 28 at about 6:30, but i held out till just after 10 to hit the park.

Ok then, you're ok  ;)

YP1 02-13-2006 03:00 PM

I did 8k on the treadmill this morning, which I'm pleased with as I'd only had an hour and a half in bed after getting back from my weekend away rather later than I planned (at 4.30am!) :dizzy:

angel-eyes 02-13-2006 07:09 PM

I've been lurking and reading all your posts.....so motivating!! I am a newbie wanting to get started. Can anyone reccommend how and what to do to get started? I have been using a treadmill to work up to a 20-30 minute run. I have it in my head to do a 5k run the beginning of April. I would appreciate any help or info....THANKS!! woohoooo:carrot:

lizzbabe 02-13-2006 09:48 PM

Did a quick 4 miles at the park after work today and let's just say the sun was shining and I was enjoying the weather MUCH more than Saturday!

Lucky13 02-14-2006 08:39 AM

Hi Ladies

Did my 11-mile run on Friday of last week. It's not one of those runs I would have called "fun". It was pretty much a struggle for the last second half but I managed to finish in 98:45. (my goal was 99 min)

I did another 7 miles on Sunday (broken up into 2 runs) and will not run again until Wednesday. I think i need a little more healing time (plus today's V-day - lol)

Have a great day!

Em

i believe that you can find a training schedule on www.halhigdon.com for novice runners wanting to do a 5K. I am doing his schedule on a) to increase my 5K speed overall and b) will start his novice training for my first half-marathon.

good luck!

YP1 02-14-2006 01:50 PM

I did 7k on hills on the :tread: this morning. All good stuff :D

angel-eyes 02-14-2006 06:41 PM

JustJune....THANKYOU!! The site you reccommended is fantastic, just what I was looking for.

JustJuneBug 02-15-2006 09:38 AM

glad it helped! i love those training schedules. right now it seems brutal and i wish i could just skip a freaking day, but then i will feel horrible after it, so i ... just keep running, just keep running.. :):):)

YP1 02-15-2006 01:47 PM

10k this morning, tomorrow is a day off running so I think I'll have a nice swim.

3fcuser1058250 02-15-2006 10:03 PM

I just registered for a 10k in Ottawa in May  ...

kookiemonster 02-16-2006 01:19 AM

I didn't run today... or yesterday... or for a week and a day now.. Someone slap some sense into me please!!! :stress: I have to run by myself 2 days a week, and one day with a group, but I uh, skipped the group run yesterday... :( and I signed up for a 10k in april!!!

lizzbabe 02-16-2006 06:18 AM

just get out there and do it kookie! my friend skipped our run yesterday and i regret not going without her anyway...but I DID run already in the morning and I am going to hit up the treadmill today too to make up for it. Started some hill training yesterday and my hamstrings are feeling it today.

Miaka 02-16-2006 08:44 AM

Ran four miles on the treadmill this morning, feels great!

JustJuneBug 02-16-2006 11:00 AM

ugh. pulled groin from last night...must have been the inclines i added to my run...thankfully today is day off from running. hope that i can still do my scheduled 4 miles tomorrow.

angel-eyes 02-16-2006 06:12 PM

ohhhh....Ilene...in time for the Tulip Festival? You're making me homesick!!

kookiemonster 02-17-2006 11:41 AM

Ok! I just did it!:carrot: 40 min walk/run, wasn't so bad after all. :) maybe because I was watching tv...

LynneA 02-17-2006 11:55 AM

Can I join? I'm planning on running my very first 5k on Memorial Day weekend this year and run on the :tread: as part of my daily exercise.

YP1 02-18-2006 03:50 AM

I ran 10.6k on the treadmill yesterday (1 hour), and am trying to persuade myself to get out there this morning. The little bit of red wine from last night is trying to persuade me not to though ;)

Miaka 02-18-2006 08:48 AM

I did my 3.5 miles this morning. I am up to 16.5 miles per week. Three more weeks and I'll be 20 miles/week! Yeah

YP1 02-18-2006 09:56 AM

6 miles round the park this morning, it was beautiful weather for it in the end and I'm so glad I forced myself to go out and do it.

kykaree 02-18-2006 01:17 PM

I ran/walked 1.26 miles in 20 minutes today at the gym, my first attempt at running! I'm aiming for a 30 minute session on Monday, and to extend my running intervals to 2 minutes rather than 1 minute.

YP1 02-18-2006 05:00 PM

Yay Kyk!!!

AnneWonders 02-18-2006 11:15 PM

After 3 weeks of sickness, I was finally able to try running again tonight. Made it about 1.5 mi and it was pretty rough. At least I'm back into it now.

Anne

YP1 02-19-2006 06:07 AM

7.5 miles this morning. It was lovely running weather again, and I wish I'd been able to go further but my parents are staying so I didn't feel like I should go out for much longer than an hour - 70 minutes. Ah well, I get a nice long run next weekend with my half marathon!

angel-eyes 02-19-2006 09:22 AM

YP....How long have you been running? You seem to log in some really long runs and I was just wondering how long it has taken you to build up to that? There may be hope for me yet!! ;) I downloaded a novice training schedule to help me train for a 5K race in April, but the run for today is 1.75 miles and its freezing outside (-5F) !!! My gym is also closed today so not sure if I can get that cardio in. Other than the huge blister on my foot.....so far so good. Have a great day!

YP1 02-19-2006 09:50 AM

I've been running about a year, probably a bit less. I did my first 5k in July last year, then 10ks in September and November, and I've built up from that. I was surprised at how quickly I managed to increase my long run from 6 miles to 12 miles as part of the half marathon training - I only really decided to do it after new year.

Believe me, if I can do it, anyone can!

lizzbabe 02-20-2006 12:54 AM

It has been brutally cold this weekend (in the 20's) but I did manage a 30 min run yesterday and today on the treadmill increasing speeds up to 8.5mph. Tomorrow I should be able to do an outdoor run, we will see.

Miaka 02-20-2006 07:29 AM

lizzbabe - I can't believe you are running at 8.5 mph. I tried 7 mph the other day and thought my legs might collapse.

I am still working towards 20 miles/week at 6 mph; I should get there around mid March. But then I don’t really want to increase the mileage because that all the time I can spare in the morning. Speed work would probably be a good next challenge. But how fast should I increase my speed?

JustJuneBug 02-20-2006 09:41 AM

its a short week for me on the daily run(s) because i have the 10K on saturday. looks like the temps should be mid 40's but i am hoping for 50ish...

missprincess 02-20-2006 09:59 AM

I have a question, for all you, experienced runners!

i started running last September i was up to running 3.5 km a day which was pretty good for me. Then it got cold i stopped running and gained another 20 pounds over the winter. Yesterday i got on the tread mill and started running, about 15 minutes in i checked my heart rate and it 86. i thought my watch was broken so i used the machine to check it and it said the same thing. The thing is, my heart rate is usually 155 when i am exercising...My question is: Is this supposed to happen? Has this happened to anyone else?
i felt really good and i felt like i could keep running another hour..Any ideas???
