I'm looking into buying an elliptical machine, but I'm not sure what kind is the best. I'm buying one used because the new ones are too expensive for me right now. The only ones I've seen for sale are the various types of Pro Forms. Anyone have one? Are they any good?

Consumer Reports didn't like Proform. I copied part of the article at http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50314 If you are a member of Consumer Reports online, you can view their full report with ratings. But in a nutshell, the Proform machines frequently needed repairs. If you buy one, make sure you find out from them what happens if it needs repair. Do you have a local service center? If not, they may advise you to ship it off (shipping at your expense $$$) or they may just mail parts to you and walk you through the repair by phone.

Thanks for letting me know!! I thought I had read something like that about the ProForm models before, but I wasn't sure. I'll have to find something else that's reasonably priced.

Check out your local library for their online databases. The reference desk should be able to tell you how to access that publication. They may have a hard copy as well. I would look at C.R. before spending that kind of money!

I have recently spent some time researching elliptical in the hope of getting a good one. I also read the reports of frequent repairs on the ProForms. ProForms and some of the other comparable ellipticals are made by the same company ,Icor. Here's link that I found on elliptical trainers Ratings, reviews and costs. It really comes down to "you get what you pay for", Which is why I'm still saving my money for the Smooth CE (wish I could afford a PreCore but I can't).

I have the Tony Little Gazelle Edge which you can get from Walmart or walmart.com for around $100. I am currently doing it for about 30 mins. or 2 miles each night and I can feel it in my legs. The only thing I wonder about is if it is giving me a workout on anything else - stomach, arms, etc.....but then again, it's better than not exercising at all!

My advice is to bring your sneakes with you and try out the machines. Try the functions, programs and see if YOU like it. If you like it you will use it.
