  • I'm not a fast runner, just determined.

I ran a 5K last week that if I had been driving I would have pulled over, the rain was so torrential. All I can advise is what I did. 1.) Ball cap pulled down so that I could see. 2.) If the puddle was deeper than my ankles, I walked rather than run. 3.) If there were wet leaves, I walked rather than run. 4.) Most important: I kept on going and finished. Finishing is always a Good Thing.

Tomorrow is my first 8K. I've been running 5Ks for a year. My goal always is to finish. And if I fall down, get back up and finish the race.

My one other goal: chasing the person in front of me and passing them. Competitive? Only in my own mind!
  • Hi Tig Long time no see! If I remember right you and DH ran quite a bit, so I guess you're still at it? Well by the looks of the forecast there will be sun and cloud in the AM and the rain will start in the PM... so that's a relief...
  • GREAT Ilene!! Go out there and do your thing! We all are cheering you on.

    Tiki.
  • Good Luck Ilene and Tig! As I am sitting her watching the rain I am hoping this is only here and not there ( and there).
  • Thanks ellen and congrats on beating the time you wanted!

Good luck tomorrow on the 8k tig!

Ilene, I hope your weather is like ours. 2pm and overcast, but no rain so far (and not much wind either). I hope it went well.
  • Well, I'm BAAAACK ! I'm quite pleased with myself I finished the 10k in 1:08, I was VERY happy with that time !! It drizzled a bit before we started, it stopped, then when the last person arrived, it started to rain !! Can you believe that ? Every one must of said their prayers last night that's for sure...

It was a lot of fun DH and DD were there and would be at different stops to cheer me on, they took a few pics which I'll post later...

I was extremely nervous though, I slept well last night but the 2 nights before that were not good...

    Anywhoo gotta go ... TTFN
  • WTG Ilene!! You are my hero!
  • Congratulations Ilene! Great time (and great luck with the weather too).
  • Excellent Job Ilene!!!!! You really are a Cool Runner!

    Tiki.
  • Super time, Ilene!! Congratulations!

I finished the 8K. I ran the first half and then the second half walked and ran. It was great to know that I can do it. I've got some training to go on my endurance before I can tackle a 10K. Maybe next fall . . . . meanwhile, I need my training runs to be a bit faster and farther. I'm still jogging, not really running. I need to figure out a speed between jog and sprint and get comfortable with it.
  • Great run, Tig! I know you will figure out what works best for you! Good luck working out the details before it gets too hot and humid. Will you move into treadmill work then, or push through outside? A fall goal of a 10K makes a lot of sense to me.
  • Same here, Tig! Congrats on your run and I think you will be totally set come fall to run a 10K. Good luck on working out your stride. That is always difficult for me, as well.

I finally found a new pair of running shoes that I like. They are Nike's (my fav) and so light and comfortable. My next run is not until Tuesday (I think) and I can't wait to try 'em out!

Tig - The difference between a runner and a jogger is a box on an entry form. - that's not my quote, but I think about it when going uphill and feel that walking would actually be faster than my running.

Ilene - Great job on the race. Entering a race is still daunting to me, let alone in bad weather.

I ran my 3 miles this morning, it is so hilly here, I am actually starting to fantasize about flat ground (how pathetic is that?). We are still running 12 minute miles, does that equate to a better time on a flat surface? The 1/2 I want to run is in downtown Phoenix and an incredibly flat course.
  • Hi there! You ladies are all so inspirational, great job everyone on the races!

I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips for running uphill. This morning while jogging, my bf said "let's go this way!" up a HUGE hill, and I really had a hard time (had to walk partway up, had to stop totally at the top to recover, etc). The second hill we did I tried sprinting, and I managed to get a little farther, but I felt like I was going to pass out by the time we got home. What can I do to make hills easier (other than just keep running up them)? Would working out with a stairmaster help??

    Thanks!
