I'm addicted to workout videos myself. I set up an area with a dvd player, a basket with different weights, bands, yoga mat, strap, anything I find on sale at tjmaxx or whatever, and I put myself in there every day (but one day off per week). I am using Netflix as my resource to try new workouts every week. I looooooove it. It's the longest I've ever stuck with anything *exercise* in my life. Have you ever tried Leslie Walk away the Pounds? Time flies and it's an easy thing to start with.
I have free access to the gym at my university so I go to the gym about 5 times a week usually doing an hour of one of the fitness classes like pilates/weight training/cardio and on top of that I run or swim 3 times a week for an hour ... but I eased into this plan so maybe you should start off slow .. find out what classes a local gym has to offer because I feel more than half the work is actually GOING to the gym because once you are there then you kinda have to do something hehe
I started out by just walking a mile every day, then I added jogging sprints. That about killed me. LOL Eventually, I worked up to being able to run. Then I started going to the gym and using a treadmill to time myself and add inclines. I also used the elliptical and weights while there. Then I bought a bike and started using that. Then I purchased a handful of exercise videos. Being uncoordinated and wanting to start easy, I went with the Walk Away The Pounds videos at first. Now those are mostly what I do. I do WATP videos, some step aerobics, free weights and calisthenics, right in my own home. But when the weather's good and I have time during the day, I'd go for a run.
I go to the gym a lot now but whe I first started the whole work out thing, I worked out at home. some of my faves back then and still now were the fun low impact dance kind of aerobics tapes like sweatin to the oldies and the grind(eric nies was so cute back then). I know they seam cheesey and they are but they are fun and the time goes really fast unlike some of the other tapes which are so boreing its like ahhh when will this be over. it take a while to feel cordinated but after a few times you be on to it. once started to get in better shape and lose weight, I did step aerobic(this was a while ago when it first came out) and I lost a ton of weight doing that. now even though I've put weight back on, its pretty easy for me to get back in the work out routine, I've built my stamina up that I can jog, do the ellypitcal or what ever for over an hour. What ever I did though, it had to be fun or I wasn't doing it.
i started off real slow. having been sedentary for so long there was no place for me to go but up. up off the couch, up off the puter chair, up off my bunz!
i started out going for 20 min. walks. each day i would head in a different direction. each week extending the length and duration. as i was progresing further and further away from my house, it was always in the back of my mind that i would have to walk that far back. and being the ever concientious sloth... i made sure i never left the house without my cell phone. in case i had gone to far and needed to call my hubby to come pick me up. ~laughing~ thankfully i never had to use that option. my slow strolls turning into hikes as i was learning the lay of my new land.
the Gym was my true goal. i wanted to build up my stamina and get the squeeks out of my knee's before i walked thru those doors again. and i have! i started off slwo there too. just reaquainting myself with the machines and free weights for the first couple of months. then i dove in head first, it was like..... "Yea, i have the POWER!" ~said in her best He-man voice~ and then as par for the course for those who do to much to soon........ i hurt myself. it wasnt even in the Gym! i went bowling after a leg day session. i'm not even a bowler. i'm a gutter ball thrower!! ~laughing~ but bowling is different here in Austria then in America. the balls, the pins, the games they play. i was eager so i leaped at the chance. and when i felt that twinge down the side of my hip. didnt think nothing of it..... till i felt it again only stronger, grabbing my leg and thinking "Now heyyyyyyyyy" needless to say by that evening i was walking like an Unfit ( i felt that important to include ) 92 year old. the following day i couldnt even put weight on it. ~power pout~ oooooooops sorry i'm digressing....fast foward...... Baby'd the injury and i am back with a new routine.
i walk every morning for a minimum or 20 minutes. just to say hello day and to give my adorable pooch a chance to read (sniff all those wonderful smells) the doggie daily along our trail. i go to the gym only 4 days a week now. splitting my routine M & F uppers/back, T & TH lowers/abs. wednesday, saturday, and sundays i hike for at least 45 minutes to an hour. oooooooooo remind me my next post to tell you about "Horrendous Hill" ..... ~shudders~ its like doing forward lunges all the way up! arrrrrrg...... but i'm doing it, slowly but surely
February I started the WATP program....now I'm trying to do 25 miles per week which I've done for the last 3 weeks or so. I haven't been on the scale but my clothes are looser. I'm addicted to Leslie & I also like the "Fat Burning for Dummies" to add some variety. I found alot of Leslie's DVDs on Ebay for great prices!
Right now I'm doing weights with a 3 day split (i.e. M/F Upper body, W lower, then the opposite the next wee), and aiming for 4 good carido workouts a week (being happy when I get 3 ) Since I work full-time and it involves evening meetings, this works for me, though I know if I did more I'd lose faster. When I get back from vacation in early May I'll be trading the gym cardio for outdoors walking/running and/or biking.
I am doing cardio 7 days a week. A few days a week, I run, I do the elliptical machine some, on days I don't feel like going to the gym I do Tae Bo and on the days I don't even feel like going downstairs I ride my stationary bike. I also lift weights 4 days a week, hitting back, abs, chest, shoulders and legs. I am searching for a good Pilates tape to add to my repertoire. Suggestions anyone?
I go to the gym three days a week in the morning. When I first started, I took a pilates class, and it was REALLY hard in the beginning but I could see my personal progress, even though I was behind the rest of the class. Once the class was over I started attempting to jog around the track (haha, notice the "attempting"). I could barely go one lap (1/8 mile) without having to stop and rest! I would go on the elliptical for 20 mins or so after trying to jog to make up some more cardio, since the elliptical is much easier for me than jogging.
Recently, I have been jogging about 2 miles (I did 3 Friday though!) on the track. After that, I do crunches for a while (following the techniques I learned in the pilates class). Before I hurt my wrists (I have chronic tendonitis, it flared up again), I was also doing upper body weight lifting after the crunches. It was really scary for me to get started with lifting, but my boyfriend has been lifting for years so he taught me everything I needed to know. I'm hoping my wrists heal up and I can get back to it soon! I'm also planning on checking out what classes are offered this summer, maybe I can take yoga or another pilates class, or maybe an aerobic dance class!
