2 miles with speed work (intervals of 2 minutes hard, 2 minutes easy). So so so so humid. Epic sweat fest. :p

:running:

Riddy 05-20-2013 10:20 PM

I got up early on Saturday and did a short run (for me) - 1/2 hour. Just the fact that I set my alarm for 6am on a Saturday to run before my very full day is a success in my book. :D. I did yoga yesterday and today, probably won't get in another run til Wednesday. 2-3 times a week seems to be my sweet spot.

curvynotlumpy 05-22-2013 08:57 PM

Hi everyone. It's been a very long week...and it's ONLY Wednesday. Finally got a three mile run in after work. Didn't want to do it, but glad I did. Feel much better.

elvislover324 05-22-2013 09:09 PM

I graduated my c25k training on Monday! I thought I had to do 2 more days of Week 9 but apparently this week is just a 1 day run! I did the W9D1 again today (it told me I graduated again LOL!) and I'm going to do it again on Friday. Next week I am going to add 3-4 minutes to the 30 minutes I currently run and get my distance up. I only run at 3.8mph so fast walkers would be doing laps around me.

I love reading this thread, some of you are fast!!

Riddy 05-22-2013 10:42 PM

Way to go, elvislover!!!!! :cp::yay::yay::yay::cp::bravo:

I did another 30 minutes before work today. My first mile was pretty slow, but the second mile took me 13 minutes 6 seconds - that's downright fast for me! I'm aiming for another "short" run Friday before work. Maybe Monday I'll finally get in a "long" run.

Run happy, chicks!

alaskanlaughter 05-23-2013 12:20 AM

way to go elvislover!!!! ive never been able to run distance in all this time....I get bored and my asthma starts to act up

I did HIIT intervals today and some ab work on a weight machine....that's going to be my summer routine I think, and add difficulty as I go....I cant add time, as I have very little extra time to spare, so I add difficulty

right now on the HIIT intervals i'm doing a few "warm up" ones hitting 6.3-7.0 speed and then 3 intervals at 8.0 and then 3 more at 8.1-8.3 speed....8.3 is the highest speed I can hit right now...and in between the running I am walking at 3.6 speed....I do two miles of that total walking and running

alaskanlaughter 05-24-2013 03:23 PM

Where did everyone go?

I went for a nice trail run yesterday morning and again this morning...My legs are regretting it LOL

curvynotlumpy 05-24-2013 05:03 PM

Still here alakanlaughter!

Long, tough week at work. I work at a university and we're on the down hill slide to the end of the term. Have been going in early and staying late. Been busy wrapping up programs, attending student events, and handling the inevitable paperwork that comes with it all. Good work but time consuming :dizzy: Haven't run since Wednesday but am hoping to get in an early run tomorrow morning.

Trying to stay dry over here! :rain::rain::rain: It's been raining or storming almost nonstop since Wednesday afternoon, with no end in sight. If I'm lucky, it will stop raining by Monday.

elvislover324 05-24-2013 10:24 PM

Thanks everyone!

Someone told me about the Couch to 10k app which picks up at the end of the 5k app so I'm going to try it. I'm lost without my program to do!

I ran for 30 mins today and it was A.W.E.S.O.M.E. I feel so strong even though I don't run fast or far.

I finally fit into a size 12 pair of capris today (haven't worn a 12 in at least 13 years). Does anyone feel like their body shape changes with running? I'm still a pretty high weight for a size 12 (even if they are a bit vanity sized).

Novus 05-25-2013 07:08 AM

I'm heading out for a run with my 5K race buddies (my bff and sil) later this morning. It is SO COLD....barely 40 degrees at the moment. A big difference from Monday when it was high 80s and I almost drowned in sweat on my run! But it's only 2 weeks until we do the Color Run so we gotta get our run on.

Elvis, I'm so glad you're here! You're gonna be doing a marathon by autumn. ;) I don't know that I've really noticed how running affects my body shape. I've always had narrow hips and thin legs so I tend to wear smaller pant sizes than many people who are at a similar weight as me. :dunno: I do know that running gives me some fabulous muscle definition in my legs and butt! My calves are a beast to shave because of how ridgy they are.

Novus, I couldn't agree with you more. I have very narrow hips and really defined, toned legs. All from running and walking. However, I'm also apple shaped, not dramatically so, but I often can get away with a smaller pant size because my hips are narrower. And if you don't mind me saying...running has given me a pretty sweet backside as well ;)

alaskanlaughter 05-25-2013 01:07 PM

im going to try to run on pavement today...we'll see how that goes....im hoping that ive strengthened my muscles, tendons, ligaments etc enough that it wont hurt much....as much as I love the trail running, there are huge segments of that trail covered in big chunks of gravel that REALLY(!!!) hurt to step on when running and I find myself running unconsciously slower because i'm afraid of stepping on one of those sharp edges

Kitcherella 05-27-2013 05:12 AM

Hello!

I am back after a two-week hiatus and what a run it was today.
I ran 6km and I was thinking to go for 7 as I was feeling pretty good, I slipped on mud, flew and fell. :faint:
Luckily, I only got a few scratches and my left hand hurts a bit. It was a spectacular fall. I cursed, stood up and continued running for a bit but I stopped to come home and put some ice on my hand.
Anyway, I am back.

Congrats Elvis and bravo everybody for progressing.

Good luck, alaskanlaughter and please be careful! When and if you can try to alternate between running in the grass and asphalt as it will lessen the impact on your joints. Regardless of surface be mindful of uneven ground. I hear you when it comes to chunks of gravel on trails. The trail near my home has embedded rocks and I have to be vigilant about making sure I pick up my feet so the tip of my running shoes doesn't catch the rock and I go flying! Been there done that, don't care to repeat it!

I'm so glad you're okay, Kitcherella! I've tripped more than once; my hands bear the scars of my most recent fall on the trail near my home. Skinned the palms of my hands and bruised my forearms. I was down but definitely not out :D

Welcome shoppingspout! Are you in the process of quitting smoking? Congrats if you are, but if not, I would think that's probably you're priority. And I think it's great that you want to run!! If you're just thinking about it at this time maybe you can set up a walking program for yourself. Lots of us runners, regardless of distance and time, began and/or still include walking as part of our routine and/or training. I walked for a very long time before I began running. While I've never been a smoker I have a compromised right ankle and was just too heavy to include running as a primary mode of exercise for myself. I could however walk and walk so that's what I did. Depending on your overall health and maybe consulting with your doctor, I think you could work on stopping smoking and regaining your fitness simultaneously.

You can do this!:cheer2::cheer2:

elvislover324 05-27-2013 01:40 PM

Thanks everyone!!!

I'm not doing my regular Monday run today, I'll do it tomorrow. I get so paranoid that I'm going to retain water after a good run and I have 2 doctors appointments tomorrow so I get worried about the scale showing even 1 extra ounce! I play these silly games in my head.

Welcome to the newbies and hi again to the regulars! I love this thread and so happy I'm a part now. :grouphug:

SwallowedintheSea 05-27-2013 02:08 PM

Hi guys! I'm new but I love running. My goal is a half marathon. The farthest I've ever run is ten miles but I took a break this winter/spring and kinda fell off the horse. I'm working on hitting 30 miles a week. I usually fall short but I want this to be the week I finally reach my goal!

This week I'm going to do four miles Monday-Friday and then split up ten miles over the weekend. That = 30 miles (I think? Right? Never been too good at math haha) :dizzy:

Do you guys have running schedules you follow?

I do run/walk intervals and my goal is always to run much farther than I walk....for instance I will run the length of a street around here (distance varies) and then walk for exactly 3 driveways LOL and once I've crossed 3 driveways I run again.....I did 2.5 miles outside on pavement today, mostly running and a few walk breaks....so far my joints have held up pretty good

for a schedule during the winter I try to hit the gym every weekday between my work shifts, so somewhere around 10 a.m. usually...in the summer since I work a straight-through work shift I go to the gym earlier like around 530-6 a.m. or if its nice out, i'll run outside in the early morning....but usually the weather is rainy and bad around here so i'm mostly at the gym

Might be intruding the thread (even if, despite running 2 half-marathon, I still consider myself an in-between runner!), but I like to follow the training program of the Toronto Women Run series. They have nice program for different distance that take you to where you want to go, depending on your distance/time goal.

It's my second running season on them and I love their schedules :)

Yes--that's my problem with running. Exercise to me has to be FUN--and I am a social person so I stick with Jazzercise to get a little social time with the gals I am working out with.

But my husband is an ultra-runner. He's done the Pikes Peak Assent--and several other races that are longer than a marathon--33 miles. He used to train every day of the week--and on Saturdays he would run 19 miles on mountain trails. (He did this in his 50's and early 60's btw.) He's slowed down a little--down to running 3 miles every other day--and is still in great shape.

I also have a girlfriend that is doing the Leadville 50. And she is training at 12 miles a day now. That race comes up in July--and she is a little worried about making it all the way--as she doesn't feel she's training enough now for that one.

But regardless--running is the ultimate in endurance--it's just some of us don't have the patience or personalities for it.

curvynotlumpy 05-27-2013 07:22 PM

Hope everyone is having a good Memorial Day. I got so involved responding to the comments this morning I forgot to log my run! Ran 3.99 miles first thing this morning. Weather was nice and cool.

recycledartgirl 05-27-2013 07:55 PM

I'm late to the conversation, but I think I qualify as an in between runner as well. I ran CC all through high school and then stopped in college, put on quite a bit of weight, and trying to start back up again. Doing weight watchers I find it helps quite a bit with the weight loss too. :) I started a Couch to 5K plan a few weeks ago and found that I am already in week 3. Somedays I do 2 mile runs without the app and feel fantastic. I did the Hunger walk (in Atlanta) and ran 5K in about 40 min. I would like to be much faster than that, hence the couch to 5K training. :) Looking for any tips I can get. :)

alaskanlaughter 05-27-2013 09:49 PM

I might try an early morning outside run tomorrow if the weather holds good....hope I don't see any bears :D they are all over this town from spring to fall

elvislover324 05-28-2013 03:29 PM

Just did my first run since Friday and happy to report I survived!

I did W8D1 of Couch to 10k and increased my usual speed from 3.8mph to 4.2mph (it was like going from slow to fast, omg!). I think I'm sticking with the 3.8mph even though it's slow. I thought my legs were running so much faster under me, it was comical!

I'm so happy to have a program to follow. I was so lost last week repeating c25k's week 9 just to have something to follow!

Hope you are all having a nice day!

I'm using this 5K training program. I like that it combines distance runs, speed work, and cross training.

Yesterday's run was brutal. When I was going in one direction, I was running face-on into winds of 25-30 miles an hour. Going the opposite way I was dealing with blazing sun and 80% humidity. Oy. :)

Hope everyone is getting in some great runs and not having to deal with any wild critters (bears, geese, etc.) while doing so! ;)

Kitcherella 05-30-2013 04:08 AM

shoppingspout - Sadly, I am still a smoker but I can run so you can.
curvynotlumpy -I was down but definitely not out – That’s the spirit!
SwallowedintheSea -
alaskanlaughter – glad the pavement is working out Ok. Bears? Scary! The only animals I see are two ducks and a few turtles in the pond.
recycledartgirl – Hunger walk? What a great name!
elvislover324 - I thought my legs were running so much faster under me
Novus – same here with humidity

It was too hot and humid here today so I only ran 3.5 km (laugh here for the ‘only’)
I have set a goal for June to run 60 km in total.
Take care!

Thanks for this recommendation TurboMammoth. Admittedly, while I run and the 1/2 marathon is on my bucket list, I've only gotten as far as looking at different training programs :o--mostly Hal Higdon's. I like that the Toronto has a 24 week, 6 month training option.

Welcome Swallowed! As mentioned above, I've looked at Hal Higdon's training program. He provides several options for novice, intermediate, and advanced runners. Here's the website http://www.halhigdon.com/ Wow, 30 miles per week is impressive. Good luck meeting your goal!

curvynotlumpy 05-31-2013 12:50 PM

Happy Friday, in-betweeners! Friday is typically a running day, but I took a HIIT (high intensity interval training) class on Wednesday night. Could barely move yesterday, and today, not much better. It was a great workout and I am proud of myself for moving out of my comfort zone and trying something new, but holy cow am I sore. Everything hurts!

Tomorrow, back at it!

alaskanlaughter 05-31-2013 09:32 PM

ive put in 10 days in a row with a run....several outside and several HIIT ones at the gym...today I did another HIIT one because it's started to rain again outside....im going to rest this weekend

Riddy 05-31-2013 09:56 PM

I tried to get out before it was too hot out this morning, but boy it was humid! I did a full 5k, though. Although each mile seemed harder, my time got better with each one. :?:

I don't follow any specific program now. I run when the weather is good and I can easily make the time (day off or going in late to work). 2-3 times a week seems to be my sweet spot. I can do 2 days in a row, but a third day is too much. When I was on vacation, I ran 5 times in 12 days - that was a bit much - I came home with a sore hip flexor.

I probably won't run again til before work on Tuesday - working all weekend. :(

IanG 05-31-2013 09:59 PM

I was out early to beat the heat. Ran 2.5 miles in 25 minutes and broke my one mile record which is now near-as-damn-it to 9 minutes. I'm nearly at 5k! Best sign up for the Fall!

curvynotlumpy 06-02-2013 02:59 PM

Ran 3.44 miles this morning to beat the heat. Yesterday, 97 degrees, today it's supposed to reach 96!

elvislover324 06-02-2013 03:10 PM

I'm wondering if any of my fellow runners might know... I'm thinking of signing up for a 5k road race.

Did you ever google someone looking for whatever info and you find their name and every race they ran, their age, their finish time, etc.? It's usually on coolrunning.com.

I'm paranoid about being found on google and anytime I do find any reference to myself I work like crazy to remove the info. (Yep, very paranoid, like someone wants to find me!)

Can you opt out of published data on a run or do I really have to sign up as Jane Doe every time I run?

Your welcome! :) Honestly sooo many people seems to be following Hal Higdon's programs from what I see online (on Fitocracy, for example), so I guess they okay ;) I chose the one from Toronto when I started training for my first run because when I googled something with the numbers of week I had before the run, and it came up with one of them that was exacly that time laps LOL. But I really came to love them, as you say, they offer your different option in term of their length and the goals you want to achieve.

A halfmarathon is something AWESOME to get on your bucket list, I still consider the time I ran my first last year as one of my biggest life achievement :)

Let me know if you have any question about training or anything, I'd be happy to help you :)

I know here that the local newspaper will publish a list of runners and their finish times, especially if the race is part of the local "official" runners' group series of races...what's it called? .....the series of races that the local running group sponsors...something like that

I ran last summer in a memorial section of a marathon, just a mile or so memorial for a runner who had died...and even THOSE results were published :( which I wasn't expecting to see in print lol ughhh

Thanks, TurboMammoth for your kind reply and offer to help. You can bet that I will follow up regarding training questions. When I think about doing a half marathon, I wonder if I really can do it. I'm sure that's common. Also, I have a compromised right ankle from a car accident long ago so I don't have full range of motion of it. I'm very grateful that in the races I've run so far (5 and 10Ks) I've been able to complete running. I don't know if I can complete 13.1 miles running and struggle with the thought that if I walk any of it, it won't count. I know, I know, that sounds so silly, but that's where my mind goes.

Yes, I also noticed the love Hal Higdon gets on various run sites. HAHA! Toronto's Training plan seems like a hidden gem. :)

I totally understand how you're feeling : you never really know if you actually can do it until you do it... it is probably why this is so thrilling when you complete a 21k, or any distance you haven't achieved before! For me, it still feel a bit supernatural, I ran two halfmarathon last summer but I am still stressing so bad for my upcoming race and wonder if last summer was just a fluke or something.

It was harder going from 5k to 10k than going from 10k to 21k. In my head, if you make it to 10k, after that sky is the limit!! :)

Hello, all! I am going to start working running back into my exercise routine - probably 2-3 times each week. I've only recently been able to run 5k again (since high school) and I haven't yet attempted it in he summer heat. Any tips?

Sometimes this bothers me too... I have results that go back forever... I actually was just looking recently and I couldn't believe all the results that are still floating around out there on the Internet on me.... I mean I had completely forgot that I had even run half of those races... lol...

I've never thought of registering under a false name... that could probably work at a smaller race, but I know I've been asked for photo ID to pick up my race packet even at some smaller races and it wouldn't work at the bigger races...
