Running Resolutely in January....

6 miles on the treadmill today - Didn't get into the groove until about mile 4. I guess we have the sucky runs in order to appreciate the good ones!

Nikel1979 01-02-2013 07:52 AM

:carrot:

I started the year off with a 5K yesterday. It was cold and rainy and downright miserable. Lots of us didn't have our chips record us properly across the start, so I only have a gun time. That gun time was faster than my best chip time by 1 sec. Yay for a PR! My chip time should have been about 20 secs faster still.

I've made myself some running goals for 2013. In no particular order:
1. Finish the Princess Half Marathon without getting swept (only 53 days, eek!)
2. Run at least one race per month
3. Run at least 1000 miles in 2013
4. Run my first full marathon in Dec 2013
5. sub 30 5K (this one seems the least attainable right now)

With classes starting back, I'm going to do my mid-week runs inside. Once day per week will be speedwork. Hoping to get that pace down a bit more.

MissJeanLouise 01-02-2013 08:45 AM

I ran 5 miles yesterday. There were some places where I had to walk gingerly, though, because the roads and sidewalks are icy. Still, best way I know of to start the new year!

My goal for right now is to get my weekly mileage up. I'm at around 20 now, so I'd like to get it to 25 for January. It's hard because I avoid the gym in January if I can, and finding time to run outside when it's safe is difficult. If it's dark out I can't see if the road is icy and that makes me nervous.

I may have to bite the bullet and show up at the gym at 5am. I'm pretty sure I won't need to wait for a treadmill at that hour. :running:

lm3898 01-02-2013 09:19 AM

Started the new thread before seeing this one sorry I'll just post here:

I myself haven't had much to post - I hurt my left foot running 10 miles on Dec. 24th and have been told to rest by foot doc until this Saturday due to a pulled muscle in the foot. I am CHOMPING at the bit to run but my foot felt agitated this morning again...it's extremely frustrating especially since I have a half marathon in Key West on January 19th...I hope someone else has better news to share!

Julie131 01-02-2013 09:40 AM

I walked 4 yesterday and ran 3 this morning. My goal is to get my weekly mileage back to a respectable number (20-25) and to BE CONSISTENT! I don't even have the excuse of cold, snow and ice. It was 53 degrees here this morning!

I have 4 on schedule for tomorrow. I will do this!

lm3898 01-04-2013 08:18 AM

Working on getting back to running - tried to do 2 miles just to get back into it & my foot is a little sore today. I didn't wait the full week but I feel like I'm running out of time with this half marathon in 2.5 weeks. It wasn't a bad two miles I just wish the foot pain was good, it's on the left bottom of my left foot- SO weird! I hate be plagued by foot problems...

Julie - 53 degrees sounds like heaven - enjoy it!

Tabbycat 01-04-2013 11:34 AM

Tabbycat here.

I'm almost 57 and just started jogging last spring. I can now run 3 miles in about 35 minutes, but not in the morning. My back hurts so much in the morning (I have osteoarthritis) that I can hardly hobble. I have run a couple of 5K events and can barely break 38 minutes in the morning.

I ran 2 miles in a cold drizzle on Wed and 3 miles on Thurs.

I love reading the inspiring things you young'uns are doing!

Nikel1979 01-04-2013 08:37 PM

I'm running a couple of miles with a bunch of other people tomorrow. I'm dreading those 2 miles. I'm so much slower than everyone else. :( Yes, I get that I used to be a lot slower than I am now, and I get that I'm continually getting a little bit faster. I'm still slow though, and I hate it. They're running nonstop at a 10 min mile while I'm still doing 5/1 intervals at a 14 min mile. I don't wanna go tomorrow. :(

Cheshirecat 01-06-2013 07:25 PM

I did a half marathon Saturday. About 2:14 (don't know official yet). Oh man was I sore. Much more than I thought I would be. Of course two weeks off and Christmas cookies might play into that. It is a hilly race, but I love it. It was my third time doing this one.

That was my end goal for training, so I have to dream up a new plan. I have a few 10k, 5ks lined up but I think I might go for speed this time. I'm not very good at speed unless I'm with my faster husband or actually at a race. So this will be a challenge to actually train for. There is a race March 2nd that I am aiming for.

Nikel1979-Awesome starting the year off with a 5k. Looks like you have some fun plans for the year. Have fun tomorrow with the group run! It will be great. Honestly, I walk/run with my friend after work and she is slower than me and worries like you do--but she completely motivates me. Actually most of the people I get the chance to run with are running/walking different paces so we may only stay together for a little bit, or pass each other, but that's awesome enough to keep people going!

Nikel1979 01-06-2013 07:44 PM

My group run wasn't so bad. They were running behind, so I did 2 (very hilly) miles by myself, and then I met up with them and did their last mile with them. They are much faster, but I also pushed to try to keep up with them & ran my fastest mile ever. It's still slow compared to them.

Today I got out and did 7.5 miles. I'm finally getting pretty consistent with my pace. I even had some negative splits in the middle. :carrot: Unfortunately the blister that won't go away started to really hurt around mile 5, and I had to back off a little.

Tomorrow is a rest day, which I'm very much looking forward to. My blister is still killing me. :(

when i get blisters, they are usually BIG and BAD ughh...when i run with one, i usually put a bandage over it, then a small piece of moleskin for cushioning and then athletic tape over that to keep it in place while i run...so far that has worked really well...

lm3898 01-07-2013 08:28 AM

Well, started to ease back into running on Saturday after 10 days of resting my foot. Felt so-so doing two miles Fri & Sat...planning on trying to five miles tonight - wish me luck!

CherryPie99 01-07-2013 09:07 AM

Good luck lm! BTW - hope you didn't mind me starting this thread!!

On Friday, my OTHER It Band started to bother me! Grrrr...... May have to get another strap or may just have to slow down.

I walked the dogs 6 miles on Saturday and 7.5 yesterday and then ran 3 on the treadmill just to see how it felt. I ran at a much slower pace then usual and it didn't act up, so I'm hopeful...

Our sidewalks are COVERED with a thick layer of ice and snow, but we're headed for a warm up this week. Keeping my fingers crossed it will melt the sidewalks and I can run outside!

krampus 01-07-2013 10:52 AM

Ran 4 miles on icy snow yesterday on the bike path. Pleeeeeease melt soon.

I've ried bandages, moleskin, body glide, double socks, etc. Nothing works. It wasn't a problem until I got up to longer distances. I'm sure the problem is that mt right foot is a full size smaller than my left. I'm hoping that they can offer some suggestions. Maybe lacing my shoe differently will help? Otherwise, I'll have to buy mis-matched shoes, as I don't spend enough on running shoes as it is. Plus I'm worried about switching with my race coming up in less than 7 weeks. I can really feel it in my ankle that I started limping yesterday, so clearly I need to do something.

devadiva 01-07-2013 09:08 PM

I am out again with shingles!...........

lm3898 01-08-2013 07:56 AM

Cherry of course I don't mind - thanks for starting!

Ran 4 miles last night though the last mile was with foot pain - I guess I strained a muscle in my left foot - SO ridiculous at this point...going to try to run again as I have my next half in 1.5 weeks and I really need to build up again...

Deva - I can't believe SHINGLES are back - what happened???!? Did they say how long?

CherryPie99 01-08-2013 01:44 PM

My goodness we are a drama laden bunch, aren't we?

Deva I can't believe you have shingles again! Is that common?

As for me, I just finished a 6 mile run - and my IT Band on my OTHER leg is now acting up and hurts like ****! I'm going to have to get another strap.

Hope everyone heals up and we can get some solid pain free running in!

Jen

Oooh! I would love to do one of the marathons at WDW! I just started running, so it is definitly a future goal. Good luck with your upcoming 5K.

devadiva 01-08-2013 05:47 PM

There is not a norm for shingles and they can comeback LIKE forever....but its when your immune system is low ...or you put your body or mind under too much stress...its something that affects the nerves.Seems to me like migaines {which I get} not much control just try and take care of yourself.DUH thought thats what I was doing....I do have a stressfull job at times {waitress}.
BUT its stressful not to be running!!!!

pinkalarmclock 01-08-2013 06:39 PM

I've been running about three miles a couple times a week lately. Last couple days saw no running. Tonight I plan to run and go a little further than three.

Last time I was posting on this site (a few years ago) I went for distance (did a half marathon!) but this time around I'm going more for speed. Man, I have no idea how I managed to do those long distances before. I get so bored these days! Haha.

lm3898 01-09-2013 08:00 AM

Be careful & get well soon Deva!

Cherry - what's the w/ the IT band - is does it feel like a general tightness down your leg?

Made it 6 miles last night - I could have cried. I wore sneakers that are far from my favorite but they did help with the pulled side tendon....seeing foot doc tonight hopefully he has more answers for me...1.5 weeks until SUNNY Key West Half Marathon!!

It is agonizing pain in the outside of the knee. And the knee locks up.

Sometimes when I wear the strap - which holds the band in place, I have noticed that I can feel the band tightening up from the knee to the outside of the hip - it's not painful, though.

I hope you get some good news from your doc!! Let us know!!

devadiva 01-10-2013 09:29 AM

Trying for Friday all staying quite in my body. I am living vicariously through all of you..though we do sound like the walking wounded WHICH is a plight of runners from what I hear..think its the addiction.....BUT oh what a good addiction.I MISS IT been almost two weeks.
On a side note the Doc that treated me was a runner she was older than me had not run her 1st marathon till she was 62 so there is hope for me. She told me to take it easy,so I don't get a reaccurnce of this dang thing!
GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU HEALING!

CherryPie99 01-10-2013 07:38 PM

So the bad news is that my OTHER IT Band started to act up and caused great pain on my run on Tuesday. So I decided to put the strap on that leg today and try running without a strap on the original side that I have been rehabbing for just over a month. Good news - 5.25 miles and NO PAIN EITHER SIDE! WOO HOO!

guacamole 01-10-2013 07:50 PM

Hello, all. I am not a runner, I enjoy biking. However, I am scared of ice! I don't like to bike in the winter because I am scared of wiping out on the slick roads. I feel more secure on my feet. I have been walking about 3 or 4 times per week for the past two months or so - since the weather turned cold and roads have slick patches of ice. This week, I started walking/jogging intervals for two mile stretches. I want to get to a point where I can jog the entire 2 miles and then increase my distance. Anyway, nice to read about you veteran runners and what to expect!

devadiva 01-12-2013 01:50 PM

Yeah ran today! 3.6 my usual short run felt great a bit slow but have not run in almost 3 weeks! Last time I ran was X mas!
Hope everyone is ok out there?......

CherryPie99 01-12-2013 04:13 PM

Yay Deva! Between walking and running, I traveled 35 miles this week. So I'm starting the year out right!

devadiva 01-13-2013 03:57 PM

Cherry YEAH!!!
I ran this am 16 out got nipped by a dog broke the skin DANG I ll live finished my run did another short one only 3.6. Trying to ease back in don't want the shingles to go bad!!!

lm3898 01-14-2013 08:11 AM

Cherry how's the IT band? Deva - shingles gone again?

Welcome guacamole.

Did 7.5 hilly miles yesterday which felt good, I have my foot in a walking boot now until the race this Sunday so it should be ok. The neuroma was flaring during the run but that's nothing new haha.

CherryPie99 01-14-2013 08:30 AM

Well.... I did an 8 mile run yesterday and the left band - the one that originally was injured - was great! However, I wore the strap on the right one, and that one is in pretty bad shape. I think I didn't have the strap tight enough for the first few miles and by the time I tightened it it was too late.

I have on SMALL heels today and it's killing me already.

BUT I am happy that the left one is good, shows that the stretching and strengthening and foam rolling must work!

Hope you foot holds out on the race Sunday! Are you cutting back a lot in prep?

Jen

lm3898 01-14-2013 09:17 AM

Yea, the plan I think is going to be 5 miles Tues, 4 miles Thurs, easy lifting Fri a.m., off Sat - then run Sunday...that's the plan as of now but we'll see. Glad the LEFT is getting there, I know exactly how you feel - as soon as my right neuroma started getting better, I pulled a muscle in my left foot - so frustrating sometimes!

pinkalarmclock 01-14-2013 11:51 PM

Yesterday I ran 3 miles in about 29 minutes and today I did one mile in 8:30! Ah I felt dead after that one mile, haha! The rest of this week I'm probably going to keep up doing either just one mile or will do interval running. Nothing long for me!

lm3898 01-15-2013 07:58 AM

Ugh went to the nutritionist last night & found out I had gained....FIVE lbs in the past FIVE weeks....I was heartbroken - I haven't had a gain in nearly 9 months but I can't be too surprised. I guess that's what happens when you eat your weight in chocolate & cakes over Christmas Holiday & then can't run for two weeks due to an injury... I'm just a bit heartbroken this a.m. still :(

Going for a run tonight so hopefully that will help me clear out these negative thoughts...

Nikel1979 01-15-2013 08:32 AM

So much for today's run. Stupid flooding.

Nikel1979 01-15-2013 01:05 PM

I feel a little sick. I just made it official and registered for a full marathon at the end of the year.

devadiva 01-16-2013 10:19 PM

Ran 4 miles this morning,my ankle is really bruised from the dog bite, had trouble at exercise class with it but was OK on run. Work in the morn and class in p.m.
I am signing up for a 1/2 Mary at the end of April,In Carson City,Nv only one I can find on dirt near here.

Goddess Jessica 01-17-2013 06:06 PM

I thought I would join this thread since I am training for a half in March.

It was warm enough yesterday to run outside (finally!). I normally despise running outside. I like the cozy, comfortable treadmill at the gym where I can zone out and watch netflix and not make eye contact with another soul. BUT yesterday I had to go to the bank on campus but that would interfere with my running schedule.

So I decided to RUN to campus, go to the bank, and run back. I made a route on mapmyrun.com to make sure I got my full 3 miles and I had to stuff my bank card and ID in my bra because my running clothes don't have pockets and what am I going to do? Run with a purse?

I also bought the Zombies, Run! app for my phone a long time ago but decided I wouldn't use it unless i was running outside. SUPER fun. Highly recommend if you like zombies. It's basically like a little game/story that plays between songs on your playlist.

The run turned out great. Actually ended up in the woods for the end of it which made the zombie game even creepier (which means BETTER). I might have to do this "running outside" business on a regular basis.

devadiva 01-18-2013 02:27 PM

Ran 6.2 today...wasn't the easiest but made it,fell behind not running much in DEc. so need to get built back up

CherryPie99 01-18-2013 03:15 PM

I bundled up in our 15 degree (but sunny) temps and headed out today - made it 5 before the IT band started screaming.

That puts me at a pathetic 17 miles this week
