SEPTEMBER RUNNING - Fallllll into running.

Hello all sorry for the late start to the thread - I was on vacation for the latter part of last week [vacation/destination wedding] VERY busy but fun.

Logged 4 miles in 34 min. on Sat., Sept. 1st before the wedding prep started so I'm glad I got a workout it.

Start sharing & happy Sept. to all & here's to FALL TEMPS [Except you Cherry - I know you'll be sad to see the heat & humidity go!]

CherryPie99 09-05-2012 08:22 AM

I am soooooo sad to turn the calendar to September!! Last night I was working out in our basement lifting weights and I looked over at our treadmill and realized that this is too soon going to be my reality :(

Anyway - if you didn't see, I did my longest run on Sunday - went 11.25. Towards the end my right hip got pretty sore and I felt a twinge in my achilles. I was relieved that when I ran yesterday I wasn't sore at all, so it must have just been the longer distance getting to me.

5 miles in a light rain yesterday. I'll run a quick 4 tomorrow and hope for the best in my 10K race on Saturday!

LM - glad you had a great vaca!

devadiva 09-06-2012 09:02 AM

Yesterday ran a 10k 1/2 uphill 700 ft. then downhill not fast but what a great run its on dirt rocky road much like trailrunning out in the oopen {hunting season} but love it able to look all around cooling off a bit in the am only 70 at 7 am. till suns up...But frost will be on the pumpkins soon!

AmyAmy 09-06-2012 09:55 PM

I ran yesterday with the local running wich I joined a week ago. I ran 5 kilometres in 34 minutes and 20 seconds.

Big improvement from last week which was 36 minutes. I'm still waaaaaay behind everyone else, but I'm using it as motivation. This time one of the other runners came back to run the last kilometre with me. He was running way faster then I was, but I was determined to keep up for as long as I could. I managed to, which I think led to the increased time, and I even sprinted the last few metres. I think I can run a lot faster than my mind thinks I can, I just need to break through that mental barrier.

TripSwitch 09-07-2012 12:49 AM

I'm just getting back into running so I've been just tracking my minutes not my miles right now... although I have pretty good idea of distance because I'm doing runs that I'm very familiar with and have run for years...

I love running... I like to be out for at least an hour, and usually much longer... So today I put together a 90 minute run... felt pretty good, some aches and pains along the way, but nothing unusual... a little tough going towards the end, but that's to be expected once you're out for more than an hour, at least for me anyways....

I've run 3 marathons in the past... So I'm pretty sure that I see another in my future... But I've actually always had a secret desire to run an Ultra... So I guess we'lll see... Dare to dream...!!!

I'm so glad I found this thread... I think it's just what I need to keep me motivated as I try get my groove back...

Happy trails everyone...

My calf injury seems to finally be healed. I was able to do a sprint workout last Sunday without it flaring up and I think that's a sign that everything is ok.

KylieH 09-08-2012 11:42 PM

You guys are an inspiration! I just signed up for a 5K in November. I haven't done any serious running, so I connected with a trainer. So my accomplishment today was 1 mile in 13:40. Hahaha

devadiva 09-10-2012 11:47 AM

Ran the new 10K route with the 700 ft gain on the first part. Hubby and I went on a fast hike 5 1/2 miles in pretty pumicey soil {like walking in sand}. It was our 36 th annivsary. Started back my strenth training class last week YEAH! Water areobics was OK BUT los talot of mucsle tone and stamina BRING IT ON!
Glad to see the newcomers.!!!!
just got the notice for an upcoming 5 and 10K on OCT. 20 th. It is the race that started me running last year....so it will be my annivesary run I'll do the 10K....last year I walk and ran the 5k slowly!!!

lm3898 09-10-2012 02:19 PM

Cherry - how was your race??

Nice incline on your 10k route deva! Happy anniversary!

Hope you're on the mend deva.

Welcome all runners new to the blog!

I had a long training run for my half on Thursday - I was so tired & decided to just do the run and look at the time after so I didn't get too focused on it. It was pretty good actually - 9 miles in 9:31/mile pace. I was happy with it.

Yesterday I did the Super Spartan NJ race - by far the hardest thing I've ever done in my life...it covered 11 miles and over 3000 ft elevation. I wont get into it too much but to sum up - the hills/mountains were INSANE - add in cargo nets, 8 ft walls, 25 ft cliff jumps, and 100 ft barb wire rock crawl...I am hurting today in places I didn't know existed BUT I'm SO happy & proud of myself. I never thought I would get to such a good place. The avg was 4 hrs, 30 min and I beat that by 1 hour likely b/c my team partner & I ran every time it wasn't a pure uphill unlike most others. Wahoo!!!

devadiva 09-10-2012 02:47 PM

IM Wow that's incredible you should be walking proud! that's quite a feat!
Cherry I read on your blog about your run great job!! You also should be walking proud! I also love reading your blog!
And yes I am getting better off the antibiotics now....but they have switched my hormones ect which is screwing with my migraines and my weight But dealing....

CherryPie99 09-10-2012 05:38 PM

Hi guys!

lm, your race sounds INSANE! You totally ROCK for conquering it - I am so impressed!

I actually gave my race it's own thread - http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/exer...ce-report.html

The cliff notes are that it was a crappy day, the course was short by .3 miles, BUT I took first place female!!

Diva - hope things keep looking up - it's always something, isn't it?

Jen

krampus 09-11-2012 11:41 AM

I ran 3.3 miles in 28:05 yesterday outside on the bike path. Getting faster! My running goal currently is 5K in 25 minutes.

devadiva 09-12-2012 12:00 PM

Found another route of 10k plus near the other one old dirt roads up the alliuval fan towards the mts. it was a mile flat to get there then ran 2.4 uptill I kinda ran out of gas {forgot my water and cell phone and when i say I was out there I MEAN IT no one would find me for months if I got a snakebite except for the vultures!} So turned around and ran back from up there you can see for miles!!!!Garmin said 762 gain and 6.8 miles miles not fast but I feel strong!

Newbie...

Hello to everyone,
is it alright to just jump in here?

I'm very new to running. After a scarily long time without any sports apart from carrying my lazy two-year-old around (and running after her when she's not that lazy) I decided to hit the gym again. Mainly elliptical and stationary bike. But since they closed the gym for two weeks due to maintenance, I needed an alternative and decided to actually use my running shoes for what they are meant for. I had tried out the treadmill in the gym and did 5k on two occasions, one of them in less than 30min. But the first steps outside were an epiphany! I'm surprised how much I love running and have to hold myself back... my knees have been an issue in the past.

I've run 10k in 64min, and a couple 6ks around 35minutes.

Last time I took part in some kind of a race I was a child. But now a friend and I signed up for an event in december (8.6k). So exciting! My goal is to stay under 50min. 45 would be great. Fortunately it is three months away.

Because running makes me so happy I splurged massively and bought myself a garmin forerunner 210 and some nice running tights.:dizzy:

And im: What an insane race! Veryvery impressive!

lm3898 09-14-2012 09:55 AM

Welcome binge! Congrats on signing up for your race & good luck!!! Please keep us updated with your progress!

After Sunday's race I have a new found respect for my body - as in, thanks for not failing me LOL - apparently only 1/3 finished the race so I'm thrilled. I couldn't move much Monday but I worked out easy Tues/Wed and did a long training run [9 miles] last night as I have my HALF marathon two weeks from tomorrow [getting SO nervous!!] Did 9 miles in 9:11/mile pace which I'm happy with but it was a struggle as my legs have not yet 100% recovered - next year I'm going to space my long races out a bit more. Excited for the Central Park women's fitness games tomorrow - 4 mile run & lots of fun classes - I'm going to take it easy though.

Cherry that is just amazing w/ your race! I read your blog and I couldn't believe it - FIRST place!!! Congratulations!!!

Deva - your routes seem so cool but I would start getting nervous w/out a cell or anything - I just bought some type of armband mace style stuff for runners just in case as it's getting dark earlier already & some areas I find can get dicey w/out even knowing it.

Good luck all w/your runs!

devadiva 09-14-2012 12:08 PM

Its amazing what our bodies can do! Today armed with my cell and water, ipod and garmin headed out on same road...trail today. I ran the flat 1st mile then headed up 3 miles into some new territory lots of sage and wide open to the mouth of the canyon with huge outcrops of rocks {any of you that have watched old westerns that kind this is the areas where they filmed them}ANYWAYS....it was 8 miles and 1,040 ft!!!! I have not even rode my bike that steep!

binge n yoyo 09-15-2012 03:29 AM

Devadiva, that just made my jaw drop! You are such an inspiration.

Wanting to train right, I looked up some training plans and figured out I should be working on my basic stamina which for me means running at much lower heart rates than I have been. So I took it very slow yesterday (around 7:20 per kilometer, 6k run) and kept that heart rate down. To be honest... it's not that much fun without the endorphins and I really also feel comfortable running around 175bpm. It's not like I'm huffing and puffing in those regions but I couldn't have a proper conversation.

Any advise on whether I should keep my heart rate low or keep running the way I started off?

CherryPie99 09-15-2012 09:44 AM

If you don't have any pre-existing heart problems, there is ZERO reason to worry about your heart rate. Just run and don't worry about it. If you feel good, you are fine.

Deva - you are KILLING it!! I HATE running up any elevations. Give me flat and boring every day!!

defenestrator 09-15-2012 09:14 PM

Devadiva, that is an amazing run! The biggest hill I do gains about 300 ft. over a mile. I can't imagine climbing 1000 ft. in a run.

Half marathon is in just 5 weeks. Tomorrow is a 9 mile run and then, if I make it home in time, a sprint workout. I've been doing this combo for two weeks already and while it seemed crazy, what I've found is that being super-warmed-up from the long run means that I'm not getting muscle pulls from the speed workout and I'm not really sore the next day. I'm doing the sprints with my running team. We're all different levels and we don't have to push really hard unless we want to.

So far my injuries seem to be staying at bay. I feel pretty good and pretty strong, though as work ramps up (I was on a lighter schedule through the summer) I'm getting some fatigue from working out so much. I'm finding that I really need closer to 9 hours of sleep each day and that is super hard to get when I get up somewhere between 4:30 and 6 every day. Even on my "rest" days, I have to walk my crazy husky mix dog and he starts picking at me at about 6:30, so sleeping in is not really possible.

lm3898 09-15-2012 11:24 PM

Went to women's fitness games did four hilly miles followed by a kickboxing class so 100 minutes of pure awesome haha. I don't usually nap but after, I fell asleep for a good hour and a half my body just needed it.

Defense: can you post or message me your workout plan please! My half is in two weeks and I would love to know what your schedule looks like. I think it is brilliant doing long runs and then a break, then sprint workouts. I would love to see it if you can post it - thanks!

Binge: run where you feel comfortable, don't focus on your heartrate as long as you don't have any heart issues as Cherry said...let us know...

Spiritix 09-16-2012 03:17 AM

Ugh, I feel so weak compared to you guys... Just to clarify something, when you guys clock how long you've run for, say 30 min., or when you say a distance, do you include breaks in that, or was it running nonstop? I can't imagine running for even a mile... I know I can, but I walk every other minute, so it takes 20min. to do a mile for me...

CherryPie99 09-16-2012 08:51 AM

Spirtix, I ran a mile outside for the first time EVER in May of 2011. I now routinely run 6 miles and my longest run has been 11 miles. If you keep at it you will get there!!

Are you using a program to help you?

Jen

binge n yoyo 09-16-2012 09:54 AM

Thank you all for the feedback. So I'll just do what feels right since my heart is perfectly fine.

Thedollylala 09-16-2012 10:25 AM

I started c25k this month I'm just now getting to running 3 minutes in a row It seems so short compared but it wears me out lol Can't wait to get there where you all are at

defenestrator 09-16-2012 10:59 AM

For anyone beginning running who feels like they can't do much, let me tell you my story. I started running when I was about 250 lbs. Maybe I made a few feeble attempts at it before that, but I started to really try harder around that time.

I did the c25k last fall and failed. Then I started over again and failed again. Walked and jogged a little through the winter, but went 5-7 miles every day, which I think helped me build strength in my legs. Then I started over again and just repeated weeks until I got to the point where i was running 20 minutes continuously, but when I tried to get past that I struggled. Then I backed off and started running 5 and 10 minute chunks with walking in between, but going further, like 4-6 miles. That's where I was this spring. Did my first 5k in March in 40 minutes. Walked twice in that race. Then did another one on Father's Day and I ran all the way through and finished in 32 minutes even though I hadn't slept the night before (I got home from delivering a baby just about 45 minutes before I left for the race). Around that time I decided to run a half-marathon in the fall and I've been training for that all summer. I haven't been in any official races, but my 5k training time is about 30-32 minutes and my 10 k training time is about 1:10. I ran 10 miles this morning and I was slow, but it is totally doable.

Losing 30 lbs has helped, but I wouldn't be running at all if I listened to people who tried to give me advice about fat runners. I routinely beat women who are 100lbs less than me in races. I did a five mile trail race in August and was in the top half for the whole field, men included, all age groups included. That was pretty great. I'm still a *very* slow runner, but I have my own goals, so that's ok. It's ok to be proud of your own little gains. There will *always* be someone who is doing better than you.

My advice for people starting out is to do little bits of running, but also do something else. i think that the thing that helped me get past the hurdles I was facing with running was the walking I was doing. I was doing the c25k, but then following it by several miles of walking, sometimes up big hills, and that helped me to get stronger. Now I can run the way I do because I cross-train with weights and cycling. I can build strength and endurance without having to do it all pounding the pavement. I know that people my size are ripe for repetitive use injuries and strains, so I've found ways to keep going without doing only one thing.

devadiva 09-16-2012 12:39 PM

I totally agree just keep trying I never ran until last oct. I just kept doing it I am not fast... But am able to run up hill and just keep running I have great endurance! I turned 60 in May as for heart rate moniters... running is the only way I can even get mine to beat fast!
As for running had another night with that bacteria thing with my stomach {don't think it will ever clear up!} so didn't think I was going to run much but headed out ran one of my uphill 10ks 860 gain....so did 27.6 miles this week and 3,250 ft gain in 4 days!!!!!! Not bad for an ol lady

CherryPie99 09-16-2012 04:11 PM

I am so excited to report that I ran my longest run ever today - 12 miles in 1:41:39!! I felt GREAT!!

Thats actually quite bass- ackwards, as far as being *beneficial* to a training plan...... :) its always best to do a speed workout on fresh legs, with a full tank of gas, so to speak, or you really dont experience many of the benfits of training for speed. On top of that, its better to do longer, slower runs after a harder workout because it more closley similates the fatigue and conditions of running an endurance event. Its quite common knowledge and practice for instance, in even a generic, free online marathon training program to see the speed work, race pace, or tempo runs scheduled on a friday, and then the long run scheduled for saturday. You will never see it the other way around.

Seeing as speed work is almosst entirely anaerobically based, if youve used up your bodies glycogen stores earlier in the day doing a long run, you wont have adequate "readily available" energy to derive any true benefit from a speed session later the same day, or even the next morning.
Thats not to say Defenestrator has not experiencde benefits in terms of being "looser" or "warmer" for your track session... But honestly you would experience the same effect if you got on the elliptical for an hour in the morning before your afternoon spped workout....

Spiritix 09-16-2012 04:16 PM

CherryPie - No, I haven't done any programs... I tried to start this 3 weeks to a 30 minute running habit, but it was too difficult for me, and I've just been going my own pace. Lately I've been running for a minute, and then walking for a minute, for 20 minutes, and I'm exhausted by then. I'm not out of breath, my muscles just aren't developed yet. It'd probably also help if I ran a track instead of my yard... sometimes I land on the rough terrain wrong, and it hurts my ankles... I have bad ankles...

Yeah... I guess it's just gotta take time. I haven't even been going for a month yet now that I think about it.

krampus 09-16-2012 05:21 PM

Hi runners!

I am pleased to announce I ran 6.9 miles/11K today in 1:04. Not going to win any races but I kept up the pace. Great hangover cure. The runner's high made the fact that I lost my car key and spent 2 hours walking 6 more miles rooting around for it more palatable, ughhhhh.

Did not find it but there's an extra at my parents' house, which is conveniently near where I'm having dinner tonight.

defenestrator 09-16-2012 06:06 PM

So far doing the speed/hill workouts has felt fine. This morning I ran 10 miles and didn't make it back in time to do the speed workout. Most of the people on my running team are not doing the long run first. It's a practical thing for me. The two workouts happen to be on the same day and I have a choice whether or not to do them.

Right now here is my workout schedule:

Monday -- strength
Tuesday -- 3 mile run with running team, 45 minutes indoor cycling class, 3 mile walk (I'd love to drop the walk, but the dog needs it)
Wednesday -- 5 mile run, strength
Thursday -- 3 mile run with running team, 45 minute indoor cycling class, 3 mile walk
Friday -- strength
Saturday -- rest
Sunday -- long run (currently 10 miles), sometimes speed or hills as well

devadiva 09-17-2012 08:52 AM

Cherry Great job on your long run!
Defensonator :you keep such a busy scedule I am sure you are going to have GREAT payoffs
Binge keep on keeping on
Spritix I tried the run walk thing when I started and we are all different,it seemed to tire me out more I just picked a slow pace and kept it going and just kept picking the pace up and adding distance,But I know foor most the walk and run thing works best, just have good shoes and a good bra.
Krampas Great run man what a drag on the keys, you are not the 1st person I have heard that happen to!

8.1 in the alphalfa flats today in between hunting seasons so thought I would take advantage....Been looking for a Half Marathon to sign up for but they are all on pavement..I found one on a trail on a river{down hill} on the other side of the state BUT its on a bad weekend we have big plans to get away and my hubby really needs it DON"T want to ask him to change! AND it like Oct.13 not much time to bump up those extra 5 miles...been doing 8 pretty regularly.

AmyAmy 09-18-2012 04:20 AM

Managed to run 10 kilometres for the first time ever today. It took 1 hour and 20 minutes.

defenestrator 09-18-2012 05:14 PM

Good job, Amy!

lm3898 09-19-2012 08:37 AM

Congrats Cherry - that's really long!
Defens - nice work with your training runs.
Good job Amy!
Deva- Nice job w/ the inclines! That's incredible!

Ran 4.5 miles last night - about 8:55/mile. I started outside and made it about 2 miles until the heavens OPENED -I would have kept going but I was worried about my iPhone, so I ran to my gym and finished another 2.5 on the treadmill. I have a 10k race this weekend...then next weekend, my FIRST half marathon - getting nervous!!

CherryPie99 09-19-2012 02:25 PM

Everyone is doing so great!

Your first 1/2, lm - how exciting!!!

Ran 6 at lunch today - temp was about 57 and it was sunny. I miss the heat!!

TripSwitch 09-19-2012 04:15 PM

It's great to read everybody's posts... I really like the positive energy here...

I'm having some trouble this last 2 weeks getting motivated to go out and hit the trails.... so I've been doing my running workouts in the pool... just strap on the aquajogger belt and jump in... I actually did the majority of my workouts training this way once before when I got injured preparing for a marathon... so even though it's less than ideal, I know I can make it work....

I think if I keep on checking in here... I'll get my mojo back and be eager to get back out there... So that's my plan... but for right now, It's time to go jump in the pool....

devadiva 09-21-2012 03:39 PM
