Default Shin splints, anyone?

Does anyone else have problems with shin splints? Any ideas or tips to ease or stop the pain all together? Thanks in advance

I've had problems with them in the past. In what kind of circumstances are you getting them? While running? Consider getting better shoes designed for the kind of running stride you have.

Slowly building up to an exercise routine helps, as well as making sure you are stretching AFTER doing your workout. I always get them if I go from not exercising much to trying to break into a routine quickly.

I used to have these something terrible in high school. I was on four different sports teams, exercising intensely several hours a day. By the time I got home for the night and stopped forcing myself to 'push through the pain' I would be in tears and barely able to stand.

Thorough stretching helps a bit, several times a day, not just after a workout. When you're in really bad shape, try taking a warm (not too hot) bath while stretching the muscle, and icing it afterward for about 20 minutes. You'll feel much better in a little while.

The only way to prevent it is to build up your workout slowly, and when you start getting shinsplints, you know you're going a bit too hard. Let it heal, ease off a little, and work up even slower.

I'm sure you've figured it out by now, but if you're stubborn like I was, maybe not. Either way, don't try to push through the pain for too long. It'll just get worse...and worse...and worse...I recall a few days where I actually had to stay home from school because I simply could not walk. Bad, bad idea, lol.

Mine have gotten significantly better over the last week or so! I think after letting them heal from the last time they were hurting really badly has made them a lot stronger

Also, I've been introducing impact workouts to my routine, but really slowly. I started with just doing elliptical, which is obviously no impact, and now I am doing short jogs on pavement (running on the road feels a LOT better than the concrete of the sidewalk...maybe that will help you a bit?).

I think just letting them rest and heal is important, and each time you work them and let them recover, they will just get stronger.

Shin splints can affect everyone, although certain people are more likely than others to have them. Runners, particularly those who run on uneven terrain or suddenly increase their running program, are among those at a higher risk of developing shin splints. athletes who engage in high-impact activities that strain their legs.
