Default Help with choosing weights/dumbbells.

I need some help in deciding what hand weights to buy.
My arms are the weakest part of my body. I currently work out to Jillian Michaels DVD's where I use two 750 Ml waterbottles filled with water.
I live in England, so the weights has to be available on a British site or British eBay. It's too expensive to ship weights from the US.

I'm thinking of buying a set of weights instead of just one pair of weights, however I'm not sure what's the best.
How many kilos is common for hand weights for inexperienced people?

Here's what I've been looking at
1. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/York-Famil...item3cb9096b9f It's a set of 1,1 kilos , 2,3 kilos and 4,5 kilos

2.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rucanor-Du...item588ead1604 A set of 1 kilo, 2 kilo and 3 kilo

What's the best choice? And are there other sets I should look at?

I don't know what type of lifting you plan to do, but I wouldn't sell myself short- get something heavier! Even if you can only do one bicep curl or lateral arm raise with a 5 or 7 or 10 kg weight, getting a heavier weight set allows you room to get stronger and improve your arm strength. I don't think there's too far you can go with the weights you are looking at. They are either too light right now or will be very soon.

Not that you should try to lift things that are way to heavy and injure yourself.... but lifting heavier weights for fewer reps/sets will help exhaust your muscles faster than really light weights lifted for several reps. Just a thought!

EDIT: For something like the Jillian Michael's DVD which likely does require a lighter handweight for a lot of reps throughout the routine, perhaps you could get weighed gloves or the 1 or 2-lb strap on weights. I just wouldn't get a full weight set that is as light as the ones you're looking at

if youre willing to spend the money, id get an adjustable set of weights.... i think a *good* set is *around* 100 bux... dont quote me on that.... itd be perfect, you could make them anywhere from 2 lbs to 25lbs each, or More!

stuff like this:

The weight you get should depend on how fast you'll be doing the curls/reps. Quick curls at cardio pace? Go lighter, 2-3lb (1-1.5kg), maybe 1lb (.5kg) if you have weak arms/wrists. If you're doing slower, more controlled reps, you can use 5lb/2.5kg (maybe more if you're stronger). After calculating kg to lb, I'd only use the 2 lightest pairs in each set you linked.

I would get a pair of 1kg (2lb) and/or 1.5kg (3lb) to start with. After trying those out, you'll be able to tell if you should go lighter or heavier: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Profession...item5f7715e3f9

If you're going to pick them up locally, go and hold one in each hand and do a practice curl as you would in your workout. Find out which feels better (think about how many reps you'll be doing).

I use 2-3lb/1-1.5kg for my kickbox dvds. The 5lb/2.5kg was too heavy for the quick-pace curls but works good for slower reps.

Good luck in finding some that work for you!
