I run in the mornings and I always have something light about 30 minutes beforehand, so I can't help on the food front much, either, other than to say that I've been fine.

Finished week 9 day 1 today! Yay! Can't believe I've actually stuck it out!

JuhiR 07-18-2011 03:56 PM

Hello all

I am new to the 3FC forum, and had never even heard of the C25K. Seems cool, and y'all are doing it, so I thought I'd give it a try. I did W1D1 today, and completed it..... I know that's a small achievement given where you all are..... but feel glad that I started anyway.

To the person who started W9 today - way to go! Congratulations, and good luck at your future 5K.

AnonymouslyYours 07-18-2011 03:58 PM

JuhiR -- I was where you were just 9 weeks ago! That is a great accomplishment! I felt SO good about myself at the end of week 1 day 1, and at the end of week 1 day 2, 3, etc. Every single time I complete a workout on this plan, I feel like I have achieved something great, and I have. And every time you complete one, you have, too! So stick with it, post back in two days and let us know you completed week 1 day 2. :) Good luck!

Peaches5577 07-18-2011 06:37 PM

Hello, another newbie here getting ready to start C25K training this week. I have a 4.1 mile run/walk in September I am getting ready for and a 5K two weeks after that in October. Better start now if I am going to be ready!
My overall goals are to get into a good running/exercise rythm for the rest of my life. As well as to build endurance, cardiovascular health and of course, shed some lbs!
I am following the low carb/high fiber/protien approach and also watching fat/calorie content. I am hoping to lose 26 lbs to get to my first goal weight.

Hi - I'm new to this thread, and hoping for some advice.

I did W4D1 last night and was not able to complete it. This was the 1st day of the program I wasn't able to complete. I am exclusively using a treadmill. I currently walk at 3 mph and run at 5 mph, and have not had any issues up until this day of the program. I made it through the 1st 3 runs, but the last 5 minute run I ended up power walking at 4 mph.

When you don't make it through a day, do you just repeat until you can complete that day? Since week 4 is still the same routine for all 3 days, when I finally make it through the full run, should I do it 2 more times before I move on to the next day, or if I repeat it over 3 times before I can complete it, should I move on to the next week?

Also, any tips on eating for running days? We had a later dinner last night, and it was more protein heavy, and I was feeling almost sick to my stomach by the end of the last 3 minute run.

I eat South Beach, primairly Phase 3 maintenance, so I usually have 2-3 servings of a whole grain starch per day, combined with leaner protein and lots of vegetables, with a smaller amount of fruit. This has seemed to be enough carbs to give me the energy I have needed up until this point. When is the best time of day to eat my starches? I normally go to the gym at 7 pm, and dinner is usually around 5:30 pm. I'm more likely to skip a starch at dinner, and with it being summer grilling season, our meals have been leaning heavier on the protein side. Should I be eating a lighter dinner on running nights and getting my starches in closer to my run? Also, how much time do you give yourself between eating and running?

I need to get this figured out and find some good balance before getting into the longer runs, so thanks for any help you can provide!

I'm totally with you. On Sunday, it was my first W4d1 and I couldn't complete any 5 minutes running interval (only manage to run 3 minutes and walk 2 minutes). So today I just repeat it and yay W4D1 is over for me. :carrot: Even though I ran reallllllllllllllllllll slowwwww. Like, realllly slow. But at least I completed it. And i'm planning to repeat running week 4 another week until I feel totally comfortable with it before moving on.

I usually eat 2-3 hours before the run - not too light nor too heavy (like cheese with 1 small serving rice). I once didn't eat and i felt light headed and almost passed out. I normally run at 6-6.30PM so I eat around 3-4PM. And then have another light dinner at 8.30PM (just some meat and veggie).

SusanMay 07-19-2011 09:31 AM

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm going to run again tonight, and I'm going to go much lighter on dinner, and get my starches/carbs in at breakfast and lunch. I'm hoping that doing that will help. I'll plan on repeating W4 till I successfully complete each of the 3 days.

Thanks Annita! That gives me lots of hope for today. :running: I have been keeping my pace steady on running when using the treadmill, so if I feel like I can't make it again tonight, I'm going to try running my last 5 minutes at 4mph instead of power-walking it at 4mph. Hopefully I'll just be able to run it at 5mph like I want to! Maybe just the lighter dinner I'm planning will help me? I don't want to split it up and eat earlier, since we eat as a family each night, and I'm the one who does the cooking! I need to find the balance that will work for me on my running days, and I really want to be able to post here tomorrow that I finished W4D1 too!!!!

NTexas 07-19-2011 11:05 AM

Finished C25K!

It is done. In honour of my last run in the C25K program I figured it would be appropriate to run 5K or 3.12 miles. And I did it! 36:01! Woohoo! :carrot:

Is this the end? No. I plan on running a 5K in September and will continue to add 1/4 mile to my runs per week until I can run 5 miles - at that point, 3 should be a piece of cake (at least, that's the theory).

I worked hard to get to this point and hope to continue to maintain it. BTW - I took the long road - About 4 months to get here, repeating weeks, life getting the way and an injury slowed me down, but I finished it regardless. And I started slow - read my post about 'running' 2 miles in 32 minutes...

Hang in there everyone! Look forward to reading your 5K results!!

AnonymouslyYours 07-19-2011 11:09 AM

Thanks! Looks like you're due to finish anyday now, yourself! Way to go!

kariatari 07-19-2011 11:34 AM

Way to go NTexas!! That's quite an accomplishment. Now you can buy the C25k T-shirt. ;) (Seriously, one of my friends did when she got it done!)

I completed W6D2 today and I felt great, despite the oppressive morning heat. The key for me has been scouting my town for shady routes with a good breeze. (The trails around here are really shady, but absolutely no breeze!) I might end up running the 25 min run tomorrow (instead of skipping a day) because I have no idea how I'll be able to squeeze it in this weekend, as I'll be gone at a conference. Once I get that run tackled, I'm off to buy new running shoes!

JuhiR 07-19-2011 03:48 PM

Congrats NTexas! Not only are you done with it, you're also running 12 min miles!

Annita 07-20-2011 07:48 AM

Congrats NTexas. You're an inspiration ^_^

I ran W4d2 today. Ah I didn't really complete it - the last 5 minutes I couldn't make it through, therefore I ran 3 minutes and walk 2 minutes.
But at least I know that I ran faster today and only couldn't make the last 5 minutes running interval (because I ran 1 lake-round more than yesterday :P). And my stomach hurt really bad at that last interval >"< I've been having stomached for a few days since the beach trip few days ago - probably I ate too much seafood >"<

I'm again going on a family trip 4 days and 3 nights - SO for 3 days I don't think I can run. But at least I'll be walking around a lot so it somehow makes up for the days I can't run (sightseeing and traveling).

@SusanMay: hope to hear you make it ^_^

josey 07-20-2011 09:28 AM

@kariatari T-Shirt?

@NTexas WTG! Congrats!

I finally am back running after a busy week without any C25K. I finished week 8 yesterday and I was surprised how well I did after a week without running. Anyways, on we go to W9. Wooohooo! I am still speakless that I made it that far.

JuhiR 07-20-2011 10:19 AM

w1d2 - glad I stuck it past day 1. Was very fearful that I wouldn't make it, given that I'm past 40 in age. Once I was on the treadmill (yes, I'm starting indoors, hopefully that will work out in the long run), I found that my legs worked, but breathing was a little bit of a problem.

But, I'm excited that I finished! I'm covered with sweat and gotta go take a quick shower and rush to work.

SusanMay 07-20-2011 10:31 AM

@Annita - I did make it!! I was slower, but I'm still very happy! Sorry you didn't make your full run last night, but it sounds like you are so close to getting it in with a good speed!! It's nice to have someone else to post with who is in the same part of the program as me. :)

I think I may have been being a little unrealistic in my approach to this week. I thought I could do all of my running at the same pace, just by using the program and working up each day on it. I guess if I was running on pavement I would not be consistant in my pace the whole time I was running, and I went into last nights redo of W4D1 with that in mind. So, I ran at 5mph for the 1st 5 minute and 3 minute run, and then at 4mph for the next 3 minute run to give me a bit more of a cool-down, and then bumped it up to 4.2 mph for the last 5 minute run. I finished with no issues at all, except my brain thinking I should have been able to do the whole thing at 5mph. I need to look at it as an average of 4.5+ mph instead of it being a bad thing that I ran the last half a whole mph slower.

I need to look at getting the solid runs in and worry about keeping a steady pace later. I was so happy that I actually finished the running parts, because I felt terrible about my failure earlier this week. Trial and error I guess! I also ate a little lighter for dinner, but nothing terribly different.

kariatari 07-20-2011 10:49 AM

Yes, josey - T-Shirt!

haha too funny!

NTexas 07-23-2011 03:41 PM

Really? Three days without a post? Come on, guys - get running (and posting) :) My third post C25K run is tomorrow and thanks for all the congrats.

SweetPeach3388 07-23-2011 03:46 PM

I'm just starting... W1D3 later today :)

TXFrogDog 07-23-2011 06:18 PM

I too am in the beginning of the program. Finished W2D1 this morning.

I had a 30 second pause during the walking section because I saw a 5 ft king snake about 2 feet off the path  and had to warn some kids passing on bikes.

Other than that it went pretty well.

kariatari 07-24-2011 12:28 AM

I did W6D3 on Wednesday - 25 mins! My reward for finishing that one was going to be new running shoes, but I'm gonna have to wait on that...just had to drop $400 on a new pair of tires when I blew a flat while I was 3 hours away from home in the middle of Kansas City. EM. EFFER.

Can't wait for W7D1 tomorrow! :)

kariatari 07-24-2011 08:42 PM

Ok...so I tried W7D1 and crashed and burned. I think it's for two reasons: I was out of town and missed my Thurs/Fri/Sat workout AND I consumed mostly alcohol and junk food on those days.

Going to take another crack at it again tomorrow. This time early in the AM too, so it's a little cooler. :) It's just another 25 minute run, so I *know* I can do it!

iamerican 07-24-2011 11:01 PM

I am starting C25k tomorrow with my hubby! Excited and nervous!

Annita 07-25-2011 05:13 AM

I just got back from my trip. It was a fun trip but I missed my running. I will start running again tomorrow. It is inspiring to hear that everyone is doing so well

SusanMay 07-25-2011 08:38 AM

Missed my Thursday night workout because my husband had an end-of-season softball party that night. Didn't get to the gym till last night. Did W4D2 with no issues. I was happy with how it went, especially since I hadn't worked out since Tuesday night.

I was looking ahead to W5 and it kind of scares me. Up until this point it has been the same work-out for all 3 days of each weekly session and W5 goes from running in 5 min. segments on D1 to running 20 minutes straight on D3? That seems like a huge jump.

Nice!

I was totally hitting my stride till wedding season started. Between travel and parties, I'm up a few pounds and totally off my game as far as jogging is concerned. Even with trying to eat OK and working out in hotel "gyms." Luckily this coming weekend is the last of them for the year.

iamerican 07-25-2011 08:13 PM

W1D1 complete. Not too bad....

Annita 07-26-2011 01:48 PM

my mp3 player broke so I couldn't do the program.
Instead, I walked half the lake (~450m), run 1 round (~900m), then walk 450m, then run another 900m, and then later walk 450m.
It was a great workout, but I think I upped my pace a little too fast, so by the end of 2nd run, I felt like I couldn't get enough air. That might also due to the humid air and very strong wind today as well. Tomorrow I'll try for W5D1 since what I did today was pretty much the same with it, minus the last running interval. I'll run slower tmr hopefully I can complete it :D And besides, the lake is quite similar distance with what I have to run in W5D1, so I don't have to use my mp3 player.
I'll have to get my mp3 fix soon :D

kariatari 07-26-2011 02:35 PM

Tried W7D1 again and it was horrible. I ran the first 10 minutes, then stopped and walk and got *super* light headed. I was afraid I was going to pass out, so I laid down on in a shady spot in the grass. The mail lady even stopped to make sure I was alright! LOL!

I'm a little freaked out because I've never had problems like this before last month, when I passed out in a bar in South Dakota after hiking a mountain. (I only had one beer too!) The EMT's who came and checked me out said it was dehydration, so I've been really having to monitor my water intake. Hopefully that's all it was. I'm going to try it again - this time either after the sun is down or before 8:00 AM. :/

MidnightRaven 07-26-2011 10:46 PM

Did a repeat of W3 today, because I've been on vacation for a week and haven't run in nearly 2 weeks. It went well - I'm going to do W4D1 either tomorrow or Thursday!

Annita 07-27-2011 07:31 AM

I did w5d1 today but didn't complete it. I couldn't run the whole last interval, only manage to run half (450m), and then walk 450m, therefore I decided to run another 450m and walk to cool down the rest 450m.

The air was too heavy today and the wind was quite strong. But my breathing wasn't as bad as yesterday. And on the bright side, I managed to run 2 mini intervals so I'm still very happy. As long as I am still running :D

Tomorrow either will be rest day or I'll run like today (cuz I didn't want to push myself too hard). :D We'll see.

SusanMay 07-27-2011 07:48 AM

@kariatari - hope your next run goes better. I would guess the heat and humidity that has been hitting the midwest so hard would be causing the tough run. I can't ever remember a summer like this.

Did W5D1 last night. It went better than expected. I only struggled through the last 2 minutes of the final 5 minute run, and still managed to keep pace and push through. Not sure what W5D2 will be like. 8 minute runs scare me...

kariatari 07-27-2011 09:06 AM

SusanMay, everytime it gets tough, I just remind myself that it's not supposed to be easy! I think you'll find that the 8 minute intervals really aren't that bad. (That's what happened to me anyway.)

I know what you mean about this summer - it's crazy! I went to float in the lake with one of my friends and it was absolute bath water! Not refreshing at all! According to our weather man, we've had 12 days straight with 90+ readings and have a good shot of breaking the 25 day record. Good lord! XC skiing season is looking good about now! :)

MidnightRaven 07-27-2011 09:57 AM

W4D1 done!!!

Wow, that was tough. Probably the most difficult increase between weeks (yet). But I did it all! What a sense of accomplishment! :)

BigChiefHoho 07-27-2011 10:23 AM

Finished w3d1 on Monday, and it was HARD! I'm not sure if it's because it was brutally hot out, because I'd lifted weights earlier in the day, or if I'm just in crappier shape than I thought, but the 3-minute intervals were really tough for me. Gonna go out and do day two tonight - hopefully it's better. If not, I may find myself repeating week 3 instead of moving on next week.

SusanMay 07-27-2011 10:48 AM

It seems like most of you run outside. Anyone else a treadmill runner like me? I'm more likely to get my work-out in if it is in a nice climate controlled gym than with the crazy weather in Minnesota. There is no way I plan on running outdoors in the below zero winter and the same holds true for the oppressive heat and humidity of summer!

BarnyardPunch 07-27-2011 04:37 PM

@SusanMay

I run on a TM as well. Weather isn't a huge issue where I am, but I started on a TM for a couple of different reasons. First, I have some bum joints. If I run on pavement or concrete for any length of time, I can end up in some pain and my recovery time is much longer. I'm hopeful that after dropping some weight and becoming more efficient, running on hard surfaces won't be that big of a deal. I can walk/jog with my dogs now outside (usually at night), but no way could I jog for 20 minutes on pavement.

And second, I just don't have the confidence to run in broad daylight in front of people. Even though I've completed the c25k program on the TM, it still feels like I'm flailing about, not really "running." And if I've gone for any length of time, I'm a snotting, heaving, sweaty mess. Yeah, it's dumb, but the thought of people seeing me in such a state keeps me from really pushing myself. So at home on the TM it is!

josey 07-27-2011 09:02 PM

W9D2 is done! Woohoo! One more day and I completed the program

iamerican 07-27-2011 09:08 PM

SusanMay: I am in MN too. I run on the treadmill. It is too HOT to run outside for me. This heat streat is horrible. What I would do for the high 70s.

Barnyard: I understand the whole sweaty heaving mess thing. I workout at the gym and do feel insecure sometimes, but my apt is too small for a treadmill. You are running and I don't think it matters where! Awesome job!

MidnightRaven 07-27-2011 09:57 PM

@ SusanMay: Treadmill runner here too! I want to finish the program on the treadmill, and once I can comfortably run I want to move outside. Plus, here in NC it's way too hot to be running outside! :)
