Yoga once a week worth it?

  • I really want to incorporate some yoga into my program. Right now I ST 2xs a week for about 45 mins and I would add it to those days. The other days I run. I'm not sure I would be able to do it both days, so it may only be one day a week. Is that worth my time? I hesitate because my running takes no time away from my family because I do it early morning before anyone is even out of bed. My ST takes very little time away from my family, but it's something I feel is important so I make the sacrifice 2xs a week. I'm usually home by 6pm, which is still enough time to spend some time with my son and DH and prepare dinner and meals for the next day. If I added yoga, I probably wouldn't be home til after my son was asleep, and this is the primary reason why I think I would only do it once a week, but I'm not sure that would benefit me much at this point. Thoughts?
  • Yes! Totally worth it. And there are a lot of free video pod casts on YogaJournal.com of all different lengths if you ever want to do them at home.
  • Maybe try it once and see if it is something to add to your schedule. Talk to the instructor to find out if it is the same basic lineup of poses. I think the instructor really sets the mood. Some instructors go for the real physical poses and move from one to another seamlessly and others go more for the balance and meditative poses.
  • Whether it's worth it depends on what you want to get out of it. What is your goal? What are you looking for?

I've taken yoga with two different teachers: One taught a rather challenging vinyasa class, which I took twice a week, and the other taught a more meditative hatha yoga.

I learned a lot about my body in both.

But the hatha yoga class was also really good for my state of mind, akin to a once-a-week therapy session. It quieted me down. I can only imagine what benefits I'd have received from taking it more often, but I got an awful lot out of that hour-long session every seven days.
  • Yoga will ALWAYS be worth it, every time you do it. :-)

  • I also do yoga only once a week. There is another class during the week I could take (and I wanted to) but that same day I do a spinning class in the early a.m., and sometimes I am tired (and my inner voice is telling me that I have already done my exercise for the day). I will hopefully take the 2nd class as well - once I don't spend my evening shoveling etc.
