Bearing in mind that this is advice I received 20 years ago, when I got the advice in college from the women's swim coach (by the way, at Illinois Wesleyan, all the faculty had to have doctorates, so she had adoctorate in P.E. or a related field. I think hers was in exercise physiology) - it wasn't about the weight involved.
I distinctly remembered that, because the coach told me it wasn't the weight itself - because she talked about that. She said that pushups were like bench pressing several times your body weight (I don't remember how much), but that it was safer to bench press the equivalent weight for a variety of reasons (and I don't remember them, because it was so long ago).
I just remember her saying she'd rather I use the weight machines than push ups.
