Mile time for walking?

What is a good time to aim for when walking? I recently added walking with my DBF to my weekly routine. We do 4 miles a night at around 60-70 miles. Now I already jog 4-5 times a week and can do 10 minute miles without a problem. This is more to get his cardio up, the problem is I'm not sure what time to aim for? According to mapmyrundotcom, we are doing a 16:28 mile on average? Now if I remember correctly , my gym teacher told me you should be able to walk a mile in 12:00 minutes? Any suggestions on what to work towards? Thanks everyone!

I do a 20 minute mile.

I also have been told in the past that you should be able to walk a mile in 12 mins. From personal experience, on a treadmill, I aim for 14 and a half mins per mile. I find that any speed increase more than that is kind of like a slow jog for me due to my height.

I found this really interesting website that lists the times per age group. It looks by their standards a time of 13.12 for women (for ages 20-29) is considered excellent.

12 minutes? Uh...not me. I can run a 7 minute mile but I have never ever broken 14 minutes for the mile WALKING and rarely can I sustain much better than 14.5 walking

12 minute walking mile would involve some serious technique changes and hard core training on walking.

12 minute mile is 5 mph which is 5.0 on the treadmill, that's jogging for me.

My wife and I trained for amarathon in 2001 and did 13 min 1 second miles for the 26.2 miles...

I think a 15 minute mile walking is a solid time for most people.

Yeah, I jog at 4.7 most comfortably. On the treadmill I'm comfortable to walk at 3.0 (20 minute mile) but if I'm wanting to get my heart rate up I'll push it up to 3.7.

When I walk on the treadmill while typing I walk at 2.0 which is a 30 minute mile.

Just tossing out numbers. :D

As far as I know, that depends on one's heart and respiration rates, among other health concerns.

I've always been able to walk fast so five miles an hour (12 minute mile) is easy for me. If I want to ramp it up I do an 8.5 minute mile(seven miles an hour).

However I can't run or jog more than a block without getting out of breath.

I live in a big city & don't have a car so I walk really fast. I'm pretty sure I average a 12-13 minute mile. But I run a 10-11 minute mile. So my walking is almost as fast as my running.

It takes a lot of practice to learn to walk fast. I did it more out of necessity than for exercise. I don't think there's that much fitness benefit to walking as fast as I do, but I get to places a lot quicker.
