30 Day Shred + Running?

  • After reading positive reviews I just ordered the 30DS DVD. The thing is, I want to do it as a secondary type of workout to my primary running goals. Is it plausible to run on the same day you do a 30DS workout? Or should I alternate days? I'm not so concerned about doing 30 days straight, but would like to do the video as my toning/strength training.

    Experiences?
  • I completed 30DS in June with no other exercise...I wanted just to see the results I'd get with 30DS alone w/my diet...I only lost like 4-5lbs, but lost SEVERAL inches!!!! and IMO I think using it as for toning/strength training is a perfect idea...you don't get much of a cardio WO from 30DS, but it's def. good for toning!! I've actually just started 30DS again and plan to do it every other day, alternating between the levels...PLUS add cardio either with walkin/running on TM or my recumbent...you will def. be sore after 30DS, but if you've been working out regularly, you shouldn't be TOO sore...I don't run long distance, but I wouldn't think running on the same day as you do 30DS could hurt...try it out and if it doesn't work, then start alternating days....hope I could help
  • Thanks KDM
  • I've been wondering the same thing too. I run regularly 3 - 4 miles, 4 - 5 times a week. I've tried the 30DS in the past but I've never stuck to it and I'd really like to give it another shot and go the 30 days. It kind of sounds like overkill but I plan on trying it and just listening for my body to tell if it's too much or not...
  • I tried doing daily 30DS along with running and that failed for me (this was part of the "30 Day Shred for 30 days CHALLENGE" thread that was started). What I finally settled into was:
    3 times/week: 2 mile warm-up run, then 30DS video.
3 time/week: just run! as much as I want.
Rest day for swimming, bicycling etc.

I noticed the 30DS caused some ankle pain that was new to me, and it would twinge during the runs, but after backing off of doing the video daily it got a lot better. The reason I have started warm-up running before the 30DS video is that I find the video "warm up" to be totally insufficient and no good for preventing injury. But, I guess something had to be cut to cram so much exercise into a 20-minute workout.
  • The warm-up always seemed efficient for me. I wonder why... hmmm.
  • Depends. When I first started 30 DS there was no way I was going for a second dose of exercise that day. I was done. But once I became a "pro" at level 1, it became so easy that I would come out of it full of energy and actually -wanting- more, so I'd go to the gym.

As a general rule, though... I do one day of 30 DS, then the next day I go to the gym for cardio, and repeat. It's all what you're comfortable with. If you want to go for more cardio after the DVD, then by all means go for it. Jillian says you can over-train, but you can never do too much cardio...
