I'm just getting into a regular exersize routine, joined a club and have been going a couple of times a week. Yesterday I was on the treadmill and had great tunes on the ipod - I really pushed myself walking faster than I have before and interspersing it with some jogging. It was feeling great then all of a sudden my body started feeling shakey, I felt weak and like I might fall off the machine so I stopped!!! I had an intense craving for sugar and was really really hungry right afterwards. Is this normal for people who are just starting out?? Wondering if I overdid it? I do have pre-diabetes and wasn't sure if it was a blood sugar thing.... has anyone ever gotten dizzy and faint from a moderately hard workout? Does it get better with time - ?
Living here in Newfoundland, Canada we get LOTS of snow which of course means LOTS of shovelling. Last year I had to go out shovelling two Saturdays in a row. I went out both times without eating before. After the first Saturday I was a little shaky..didn't think much of it. The second Saturday, when I came inside, I was extremely shaky, dizzy and felt like I was going to faint. I made my way to the kitchen, filled a glass of water, but knew i was too shaky to carry it to my bedroom---I knew I had to lie down. I called out to my sister ASAP to bring in my water..and I just remember lying there. It was really scary. I didn't realize it could be sugar levels until someone had mentioned it to me so from then on I'd eat a banana before shovelling or doing any strenuous exercise/workout.
Perhaps you could eat an apple or anything before working out to see if that helps.
I am not sure if it 'gets better with time'...however I think its best to try to prevent it from happening.
oh yeah...totally. My blood sugar is very sensitive and I don't have diabetes or even pre-diabetes. I just have to be very careful. This happens to me all the time! If I don't eat "just" enough and work out hard, I am shaking so bad when I'm done.
Oh yeah, I get "the shakes" when my blood glucose gets low.
Do you have a monitor so that you can check it?
Keep a snack close by for when it happens again.
Yep, eating before a work out can be crucial. Sometimes I must eat, other times I'm ok. I used to get shaky a lot, now those episodes are few and far between I guess it depends on how well I've eaten that day and even on the days before.
I would get this too and it actually scared me from working out a long time ago. I never knew it could be related to sugar as I am not pre-diabetic or diabetic or anything.......
