Pilates Yoga and Running

  • Just wondering if anybody out there has had success combining these three things - Pilates, Yoga, and Running??? I started running last spring and love it although I have had a hip injury that has made me stop for a while. Pilates and yoga both make my hip (and core) feel really good so I am about to add running back to the mix and wonder what experiences might be out there? Thanks!
  • I run and do yoga regularly. I think they go extremely well together. I think yoga has saved me from injury while running. I have done pilates as well, but it's not my fav. I think they go well together. If you want to know how much you use your core muscles to run make sure you run after a tough pilates class.
  • I don't know about Pilates, but I found that yoga and running went very well together.

I think the only problem would be if one was trying to get into very advanced poses, as running will make your hips tighter. I don't think that's a factor for the vast majority of us.
  • Thanks for the input! I will try to post later about how it works out for me! I never in a million years would have thought I would like running but after "getting it" nothing else compares!
  • throw in some strength training and youve got yourself a program!! I personally cant stand yoga or pilates, but im just too high-strung/high energy and i get bored!
    Good luck!
  • mkroyer,

congrats on your amazing running success! I ran my first 5k last year at 48 - it was soo awesome. I was slow but I did it - broke a huge mental barrier. Gonna do some more 5ks and then shoot for a 10k!
  • What kind of yoga are you doing? I've been doing yoga for years, and just this past year started running with it. I LOVE IT! The yoga not only has given me a more feminine muscle build (I bulk up a LOT with weights) but also works the lactic acid out of my muscles and the stiffness that I sometimes get from my longer runs.
  • Yoga goes extremely well with running... it hits all the places that need stretching ...

I'm 53 and either this year or next I will do a half ....
  • I've never liked yoga, but I did do pilates for a while, and at that time the pilates and running were pretty much my only forms of exercise.

I think all the core work really helped my running form - I was actually able to run a bit faster after doing the pilates for a while! But I had pretty weak abs and back muscles before.

I'd like to get back into pilates, but I have trouble motivating myself to do it alone, and all of the classes here are at really awful times.
  • I run, do weight training and yoga and that seems to be a good balance.

Endurance, strength and flexibility that's the perfect balance IMHO
  • So far I have tried hot yoga (really intimidated before I did it but it wasn't that bad) and yin yoga plus some other classes that focus on breath and technique for beginners (sorry can't recall the type). Liked all of them!
