Running in February!

Alright, ladies. Let's make this month a good one! Hopefully I'll be able to join you all sometime this month!

blueridgegirl 02-01-2010 10:48 AM

Wow! A new month! Thanks for kicking us off, Eve! We got another 8 inches of snow dumped on us this weekend so yesterday's run was on the treadmill. I am experimenting with intervals. Yesterday's workout was
1/2 mile - warm up (12 min/mile)
1 mile - speed intervals (sprint .1 mile, recover .1 mile, repeat)
1 mile - incline interval (.5 incline for .1 mile, 2-3 incline for .1 mile, repeat)
1/2 mile - cool down (12 min/mile)

So it was only three miles, and the whole work out only took me about 35 minutes, but was a nice way to mix it up from steady-state long slow runs. (also did a fair amount of shoveling which I think of as cardio...) I also played raquetball with a friend on Saturday which I think will be a fun way to cross-train. What do all of the rest of you do in terms of interval training in your runs? I've read about fartleks in Runner's World, so sort of playing with that idea.

Also, inspired by the strength training thread, actually went out and bought "The New Rules of Lifting for Women" and am following that program on the two days a week when I lift. I started it Saturday. I need more structure to make my lifting days effective, so figured I would give this a try. I'll let you know how it goes. It's a little frustrating because as I've been more serious about my strength training the scale progress has slowed - more muscle, less fat, but same number on scale. But I know I'm getting healthier and clothes are fitting more loosely, so that is progress even if I'm not in onederland yet.

MBN 02-01-2010 12:40 PM

Hi all - ran a half marathon yesterday, along with 18000 of my closest friends. :D It was a warm 71 and VERY humid at the 6:15 am start, but thankfully a cold front moved in during the race, bringing some breezes, cooler temperatures and a light sprinkle or two.

The Miami half marathon is a lovely course, with views of ocean, cruise ships, South Beach, and downtown. I ran a so-so 2:09, not a great time for me, but the best I've posted at this particular race. I don't know if it's because of the bridges (hills) or the fact that it's a crowded race, or what, but I've just never posted my best times at this event. Still, had a great time!

This is our busy racing time, and I have a couple of 5K's and my next half marathon coming right up! Have a great week ....

mkroyer 02-01-2010 06:04 PM

Hey all,
im still here! Still not running. Starting to really miss it.... In another week and a half i get to add back 3 or 4 sessions/wk of 30 minutes, low intensity cardio (that s a run!) and lower intensity strength training. I wonder how much of my fitness ive lost so far, it at all? What about strength? What do you guys think? If you took a FULL MONTH off from running, where woul you be when you started back up again?

I havent been as compliant with the diet aspect as id like to be..... grr......but, one GOOD thing-- im starting to realize that its OK that i over ate carbs yesterday. Its not the end of the world. And im not fat today!. Thats a good things. Im finding though, that all i do is think about food and plan my food and meals and macro nutrients, and prepare food. I dont do anything else... im SICK of it!

keep running !

jour jour 02-01-2010 07:48 PM

Started a new diet today!
Ran 2.54 miles today on the elliptical...average speed 5.5-6.0 mph. (Hoping the elliptical counts as running). It's been to cold to run outside lately, waiting for it to warm up.

SGeranium 02-01-2010 11:44 PM

Hello everyone. Nothing new to report. Feeling a little lackluster about my running lately. I'm really losing the mental aspect lately. I run often, but rarely more than 3-4 miles, I seem to always have some reason I can't go longer. It's crap really. I need to pull myself together, it's all in my mind.

Hello to new people.

Take care to people nursing injuries. I wish you a speedy recovery

salsa chip 02-02-2010 12:54 AM

Hi everyone, I'm new here :)

Almost a year ago I started on the c25k but then dropped off...so tomorrow I'm going to start up again, w1d1. Wish me luck :)

Fat Pants 02-02-2010 08:07 AM

Good morning all, hard to believe January is over with already! But that means it's one month closer to March which, around these parts, means some decently warm days in between snow storms. :D

Ran 3 miles yesterday and planning a 6 miler for Saturday when I'm not racing against the sun setting after work.

salsa - good luck on restarting C25k!

Geranium - I go through those phases, too.

mkroyer 02-02-2010 10:37 AM

Lookin HOT fatpants!!!! :)

MileHighMama 02-02-2010 01:20 PM

Hi Everyone! Fat: You look awesome! You are almost at your goal. MK: Good luck with the diet and time-off training. I'm struggling to get back on track with food after 4 days of eating practically everything that wasn't nailed down. That seems to be my MO: Restrict for 3-4 weeks and lose weight and feel greater than great and then go hog wild and feel miserable, rinse, repeat. I ran 5.5 miles on Saturday and took two days off running (still worked out) because my hip/knee hurt. Ran 3.5 miles today (Tuesday) but the knee still hurts. I'm going to Boulder Running Company to get some new shoes one day soon. Seems like that is the first course of action to take when something hurts.

Happy Tuesday!

Pam

loquaciousjogger 02-02-2010 02:21 PM

FAT, omg, skinnyjeans coming! You look amazing!

I went to the gym last night, did some leg reps and wanted to go on the treadmill...but it was really crowded. >.< So, I spent 30min on a high level elliptical glaring at the people hogging my dear treadmill. lol.

And finally, my period is here...so soon the bloating/cravings will be over and I can finally focus on getting to 140 this February! I'm thinking I'm like 144-145 once again. :(

Edit: Just came back from the gym. Did 60+ min cardio PLUS 20 minutes of leg press + lunges/jumping..thing. I read about it. I think it's called jumping bench where you straddle a higher surface (I used a stepping board hoisted up) and jump onto it with your feet together...and back. Combined with the lunges + cardio, great workout! I ate SO much today [although healthy!] so I really needed it... No treadmill yet again. I'm trying to build up my endurance a little more since I'm having difficultly running as much I used to since I stopped.

salsa chip 02-03-2010 02:44 AM

FatPants - you look awesome in your avatar :)

Well, I did it! Managed to get myself out of bed this morning and restarted c25k. Felt good, could have gone for longer but seeing as I haven't run since November, and it was cold out there, I was glad to head back inside afterwards!

EveLHaelf 02-03-2010 05:57 AM

Good Morning, Everyone!

Mk- I am so glad that your recovery plan is going well. I bet you can't wait to get back to running! I no I can't! It's been a bit over a month for me...

Mile high- hope you get your knee problem figured out.

loquacious- the tredmills are always busy when I try to use them, too. It sucks!

I got my MRI taken care of yesterday and found out I'm a lot more claustrophobic than I thought I was...heh I'm one step closer to getting an appointment with the orthopedics guy! woo hoo!

blueridgegirl 02-04-2010 09:52 AM

Hello all,

Wanted to share my good news that I took over 90 seconds off my treadmill 5k PR yesterday: now at 32.26! Of course, this is on a treadmill with a .5 incline, so it's an ideal situation, and I'm sure a 5k on the road would be significantly slower, but still, I'm happy. A bunch more snow forecasted for here, so will be treadmilling it for a while.

Fatpants - great picture!

Eve - glad you were able to get the MRI and hopefully figure out what your situation is.

Salsa - congrats on restarting c25k! Especially in the cold!

MBN - congrats on your half-marathon. So jealous of running outdoors with temps in the 70s...!

MotoMichelle 02-04-2010 01:51 PM

Hey everyone. :)

Hope you don't mind me joining in. Last year was the first year I really got into running. I ran a several 5ks and a 10k last November.

Unfortunately after my 10k I haven't run nearly as much as I should have. So I'm getting back to it now. I'm planning to run the RnR San Antonio Half in November so it's time to get back to running and training. At least I have plenty of time till the half.

Run strong, all. :broc:

Fat Pants 02-08-2010 08:35 AM

Welcome Michelle, sounds like we have a pretty similar running history. I've also only been running for about a year and tried my hand at a few 5ks and a 10k as well. I find I prefer the longer distances.... 5ks seem to be too much of a speed competition and I get caught up in it.

blue - wow, congrats on a new PR!! that's fantastic!

Eve - when do you find out your MRI results?

My long run was foiled by snow (shaking fist) and the outlook is not great in terms of weather this week. I am really getting tired of the treadmill... anyone else? I'm ready for spring!

blueridgegirl 02-08-2010 02:07 PM

Fatpants - I'll second that! We had another big blizzard this past weekend, so it will be treadmill for me for a while. It's too icy outside to even walk safely, much less run. They're forecasting a few more inches tomorrow or Weds which is hard to believe - this is Virginia, after all. Spring can't come soon enough as far as I'm concerned. And thanks - yep, I'm pretty jazzed about my new PR. Inching my way towards a 30 minute 5k...

Michelle - welcome! You'll find lots of support on this thread.

Down half a pound this week - at 203. Not much, but a loss is a loss. A bigger success is that a pair of pants I got at a thrift store several months ago are fitting and I'm wearing them today. When I picked them out I couldn't even button them, and I tried them maybe two months ago and I could get them to close but had to suck in to the point of discomfort, and now they fit comfortably and look pretty good! So even though the scale is showing slow progress I know I'm doing something right...

MotoMichelle 02-08-2010 02:10 PM

Fatpants - Totally! I always kill myself at the 5k's because they seem so much more competitive. :dizzy:

blueridgegirl - Thanks!

mkroyer 02-08-2010 02:17 PM

ive never even ran a 5k..... :)

EveLHaelf 02-08-2010 05:18 PM

Hey everyone! I'm still here, just working a lot and focusing on not losing my mind from not being able to run! Lots of spinning and the like.

FP- I have to take my x rays and my mri's to the orthopedic doctor on the 22nd and they will give me the results. Nobody else is allowed to say anything apparently....doctors! :dizzy:

blue- congrats on your pr and fitting into those jeans!

momof5k 02-10-2010 10:39 PM

Hmmm it's been pretty quiet here lately :)

I am still running....and have finished Week 4 of the Hal Higdon 10K training program. So far so good.

My family and I are leaving first thing in the morning for our Florida vacation which will have both a positive and negative effect on my progress.

We are DRIVING so I will be stuck in the van for three solid days there....and then again back. Ugh. Should be painful :(

The good news is how much I am looking forward to some outdoor running in the Florida climate...which means not having to wear five layers to avoid frostbite. Yahoo!

Wish me luck while we are away. I am so close to goal (less than 15 pounds) I hope that this vacation and all the eating out (and red wine :o) doesn't set me back too far.

Happy February everyone! See you in March (truth be told...I may still check in here occasionally while we are gone :) )

Fat Pants 02-11-2010 08:00 AM

Oooh have fun, Momof5k! I would kill to run in a warmer climate right now!

I'm still hanging in there and plodding along through my HM training plan. It's been fun and it doesn't feel too overwhelming (yet).

MileHighMama 02-11-2010 01:08 PM

Hi Everyone!

Fat: Your new avatar picture looks fabulous. I agree that you should change your name. Did you recently change your goal weight?

MK: How is your metabolism repair going? I have been thinking about you. The weather has been nice enough for outdoor running. Have you been laying off completely or still doing some running?

EveL: I feel for you not being able to run right now. Spinning sounds like a good alternative, though. Maybe it's a good exercise to keep in your routine even after you start running again. Hope the time passes quickly between now and your doctor's appointment.

I'm still chugging along doing 3.5-4 miles M-W-F and 5-6 miles on Sun. My knee pain is still there and I've been worried about that because I love running so much I don't want it to derail me. I did get some new shoes at Boulder Running Company Monday night. I went to a running clinic there sponsored by a group called Blisters for Sisters. They had a running coach on site who video taped everyone while they ran on a treadmill. I learned that my form is good, that I probably just need new shoes since my current ones are old, old, old. They can tell they are worn by how the heel looks squished down with all of these horizontal lines in the rubber. The running coach also said that it takes a lot of time for your joints and connective tissues to get used to the impact of running and that I should just keep going. Technically, I am a beginner until I have been running for a year. Oh, and a physical therapist at the clinic said that tight IT bands could be causing the pain and showed me how to use a foam roller and some stretches I should add to my routine to help with the knee pain. After the clinic, I worked with a store employee (not on commission, thank goodness) who video taped me running again, this time focusing on my feet and how they strike the running surface, and saw that my left heel pronates to the inside a small bit and put me in Mizuno shoes. She taped me again and showed me how the shoes corrected the pronation problem. She didn't think the pronation was enough to be causing my pain, though, but who knows. I tried on a couple of other shoes (Asics and Saucony) but went with the Mizuno Nirvanas. I got 20 percent off since I came in for the Blisters for Sisters clinic so that was a pretty good deal. My first real running shoes! I have run in them a couple of times and they feel fabulous. I can definitely tell that they are going to help running and help with the knee pain. Today I increased my speed during the middle part of my run and was jazzed because I felt so much stronger and able to keep going!

I hope everyone is having a great week!

Pam

blueridgegirl 02-12-2010 09:48 AM

MileHigh - ooh, new shoes are great, and they can definitely make a difference in ease and comfort and running. Even better if you can get a discount like you did...

Momof5k - oh, yes, it's always the red wine that is the biggest temptation for me...have fun on your trip!

Eve - keep up the great work on the spinning. You're burning calories and increasing your overall cardiovascular health, so you'll be ahead of the game when you do get back to running.

So I think I unwittingly discovered the power of tapering. Tuesday and Wednesday I didn't work out - couldn't work out. Huge blizzard and high winds literally kept me from leaving my house - snow drifted in the front door. No exercise on those two days - yesterday finally got plowed out about midday and carefully made my way to the gym. I ran 4 12-minute miles on the treadmill and it felt great. I was amazed how easy it was - I could definitely feel the impact of two days of rest, since I usually lift one day, run one day and take only one day off a week.

And a piece of good news - I am down a pound and a half, the scale said 201.5 this morning. WOW!!! Onederland is so close!!!

EveLHaelf 02-12-2010 10:41 AM

Milehigh- that clinic sounds like it was very informative and fun! They need to have something like that here...lol. My running shoes that I just bought (before the hip crap) are mizunos as well. They are great!

blue- We have absolutely no snow here, but it's still freezing. I'm so excited for you being sooo close to onederland! Keep going!:cheer2::cheer2:

Yesterday I rewarded my 88 pound loss with an hour massage and pedicure. The massage was heavenly, the first one I've ever had and I think I'll be a returning customer, lol!

MotoMichelle 02-12-2010 05:01 PM

Momof5K - That sounds awesome. Enjoy Florida!

Still training here. I signed up for a 5K on Feb 27th. Should be fun. :carrot:

SGeranium 02-12-2010 06:15 PM

Have fun in FL momof5kids

evel : congrats on the weight loss that;s fantastic.

still running along. I had a great 4 miler last night, I looooved it. I am still falling apart/ can't get past 6, I think I 'll pull it together any minute;) . a chest cold has kept me inside or running less the last week or two. I think that's why it felt like such a treat last night.

keep at ladies

CakeBatter 02-13-2010 10:39 AM

Hey Ladies. I'm still running. Mostly inside becasue the snow stroms we've been having. Our streets have been too icy to run anywhere. i hvae a 10K in March but I want to enter a race sooner so I will keep looking.

Fatpants- you look HOTT

MK - I am glad you are recovering so nicely

MBN - Hey that is an awesome time to me.

Fat Pants 02-15-2010 12:00 PM

aw thanks gals, as you can probably tell I'm having a lot of fun taking my photo lately. :) It's nice to not shy away from the camera for once.

I am so freaking far behind on my HM training it's not even funny. May is coming up QUICK. I've only topped out at 6 miles and I need to work up to 10 before the race. But this stupid weather is making it difficult (it's either snowing or butt-cold and 40mph winds...grrr...). We may have a decently warm day on Wednesday so I will try to get out then. Though I have to say I've been having fun with the weight lifting classes so it hasn't been a total crap shoot, and I did manage to run 3 times last week albeit only 3 miles each time and on the darn treadmill. Fortunately only one more month or so before we start getting some warm days sprinkled in there... looking forward to it!

MotoMichelle 02-15-2010 03:02 PM

Fat Pants - Doesn't the weather drive you nuts when trying to train? We don't have much snow around here but during the summer it gets so hot it's hard to run outside even at night. Yuck.

I had a great run last Sunday. I went 2.5 miles and managed a sub-11:00 pace! That's fast for me. ;)

CakeBatter 02-15-2010 09:55 PM

Fatpants- I am facing the same problems with the weather. So I have been using the TM but that drives me INSANE with the cardio equipment "time limits". You look awesome BTW.

Fat Pants 02-16-2010 08:34 AM

Thanks!

I agree, the time limits are ridiculous. Do you have them all the time, or only if there is a wait for the TM? If I go early in the afternoon or post-6:30pm, it's not too crowded so I don't have to give up the TM after 30 minutes.

I managed to run 3.5 yesterday on the TM... felt pretty good. Today I'm going out for 7 miles, winter be damned! ;) I'm starting to look for new shoes. Does anyone have Mizunos? They keep getting good reviews. My running store carries about 5 or 6 models of Mizunos that I might try out one of these days.

Oh geez, yeah. I just spoke with a runner originally from Houston and she was telling me about the humidity. YIKES. Summer time would be brutal. Heck, I complain about 85 degree weather in the summer time as "too hot"... lol!

Good for you on your sub-11mm pace!!

mkroyer 02-16-2010 10:31 AM

Fat-- i run in mizunos.. They are great. they are awesome. They feel like someone at the mizuno factory has genetically identical feet to my own. LIKE.A.GLOVE
The one thing about mizunos (or at least the model(s) i wear--- nuetral, performance--- is that they tend to wear out fast(er) than heavily cushioned and padded "other" brands-- ie; you can get 400+ miles outta some other brands, but i found i had to replace mizunos every 300 miles or so. I got around this problem by having multiple pairs of shoes that i rotate. This gives them time to rebound between runs and i get more life out of them.....But iw as loggin so many miles whats the difference between replacing them this week or next week kind of thing.....

MileHighMama 02-16-2010 12:52 PM

Hey Fat: I got Mizuno last week at the Boulder Running Company. Mizuno Nirvana 6. I think they are the latest model. :) I love them! My knee pain is a little better and I swear I can run further and faster without feeling as tired. I wouldn't know about the wearing out factor, though, since these are my first Mizunos. I usually wear a size 8 but had to go up 1/2 size. I read reviews on Zappos (I think it was Zappos) and a couple of people said they had to go up 1/2 size too.

Keep us posted on what you get! New shoes are fun.

Pam

Fat Pants 02-16-2010 01:34 PM

Excellent, thanks for the reviews, ladies. MK I thought I had remembered you switching to Mizunos last year. MileHighMama, good to know about your knee pain feeling better. Wonder if it will help with my knee/hip as well. I think I'll take a gander down to Boulder Running tomorrow or Thursday and try some on. I'm giving up refined sugar for Lent (this may push me over the edge into insanity) and I thought treating myself to new shoes once the 40 days are over is a nice motivation.

I have a question for everyone. Say you go out for a long run on your training plan, and the run just is downright terrible. Like, you finish the mileage but it really wasn't a good run. Do you repeat the long run and try to have a better go at it for another week, or do you continue on with upping your mileage the next week?

mkroyer 02-16-2010 02:10 PM

up it. you DID it, so it counts...there are no qualifications on time, or enjoyability of run...your body was out there for the 2+ hours, or 90 minutes or however long, and that is what matters..... Besides fat, if im understanding what you are saying above in the thread..than you dont have TIME to be repeating weeks! GO for it......try and figure out WHY it might not have been the best run, so you can avoid it next time....look to nutrition first and formost--- maybe your baody is at the point where you need to start carbo loading a little the night before? Maybe you need to start carrying nutrition on your runs? maybe you need to back off the running/training in the couple days leading up to the long run so you are refeshed and ready to go for the long run....get more sleep the night before? Start it earlier so you arent stressed about how long its takeing. Idont know....

Fat Pants 02-16-2010 08:13 PM

Good things to think about, MK. I ran 7 miles today and it was so-so. I ran day before so it probably was not wise to run twice in a row, even if my previous run was only 3.5 miles. I ate lunch at 11:00 and ran at 3:00 so a four hour difference...probably should have snacked around 1:30. I think those two are the biggest factors as to why I wanted to curl up and die about mile 4 today...

SGeranium 02-16-2010 08:35 PM

curl up and die after four miles that's my line ;). FAt you look fantastic. keep havin fun

I had a fun three miler today on the TM after spin class. This is how I know that my self imposed boundary is all in my head. I can run 3-4 miles after a hard spin class once or twice a week and have fun doing it. I'm lame , but I 'll keep workin at it.

The original half marathon that dh and I looked at isn't going to work for us. Too many complications. I'm just running in the mean time trying to find a race that will work for us. I hope we don't have to separate.

CakeBatter 02-17-2010 11:52 AM

Fats - If there is no wait on the TM i can keep going but they are "set" for 30 minutes and it pisses me off for the run to be broken up. A-NNOY-ING. But hey what whatever. As for the runs. I myself would repeat because that is just me. But if I was in the time crunch you are in I would not. I like to feel confident about my run but if time doesn't allow oh well, keep on trucking.

Mk I want to fitted for some mizunos. I think i will set up an appt at my local running store, which is 40 minutes away. Oh well. How have you been doing lady?

I am running outside today since the gym is pissing me off and there is no snow out. I am gonna go for it. Wish me luck. I am only aiming for 7 today. ANything is better than none though;)
