Cool Swollen Hands

I walked almost 4.5 miles today and by the middle of the walk I felt like my hands were going explode. I was just wondering if anyone else has suffered this phenomena. I usually do the elliptical and have never had this happen before. I literally thought they were going to explode. My rings were tight. I just wondered if it was from the enhanced circulation from getting going different and being in the dependent position? My hands were literally weeping with sweat!

Thanks for the help, Mira Mae

It's happened to me sometimes, but not consistently, or even often really. But I have had that sensation.

Here's an article you may want to read.

I don't validate or not validate anything it contains. I just googled and this was first on the list

Yup, blood rushing to the hands. When this sensation starts, I have to raise my hands above my elbows. I look like a mad surgeon walking around town, looking for a hand wash station. But it works for me!!!

Don't forget to take your rings off before you start, too -- that'll help keep you more comfortable...

Thanks for the article chunkychic I think not moving my arms may have had something to do with it. And it was in the warmest part of the day, The suggestion of having a gatorade or something as I'm walking sounds like a plan, and kiramira....i'm going to remove the rings cause that was horrible. Thank goodness it subsided very quickly after I got back.

If anything it's all things to try and if it doesn't improve I'll speak to the MD!

Thanks for the suggestions!

I also have to same issue some days it's usually a hydration issue along with what K said... Holding the hands above the head for a min or so relieves it somewhat or at least makes it less uncomfortable.

You are definitely not alone. I think it's the increased circulation from exertion. The last time i went for a walk/jog, I had to walk back with my hands over my head. I must have looked ridiculous, but I don't care. My hands felt like they were going to bust open and that's what made them feel better. Also, as soon as I got home, I ran cold water over them. Heaven.

It happens to me and I don't worry about it too much. The swelling goes down by the time I'm out of the shower.

Thanks for the reassurance. I figured that's what it was but I was seriously freaked out.

Actually I do get that, I swing my arms quite a bit but they still feel tight and swollen. I try to take my rings off before I leave and then washing my hands in cold water and holding my really cold water bottle afterwards seems to bring them down pretty quick.

If you do something with your hands while you walk it will keep the swelling down.

When I walk WITHOUT two dogs, my hands get swollen and almost a little painful. When I walk WITH the dogs and I'm juggling leashes, yanking them away from roadkill, dragging them around when they try to sniff things, and picking up their poopies in little plastic baggies my hands are fine by the end of the walk!

Now when I walk without the dogs I try and fidget with my hands a little bit. Even just holding a water bottle and switching it from hand to hand seems to make a HUGE difference for me.

My hands swell when they get hot, so yes when I exercise.
