Would this be a good excercise every day?

  • Well, i'm 5'11, 233 lbs, and i'm trying to get out of the 'obese' range. My goal is overweight!!!

I'm excercising every day (except sundays) With: Me walking o the treadmill, at 2.5, at a 6% incline, with me swinging dumbells, and holding in my stomach, for twenty mins. If you ever want to make your own eliptical, this is the way to do it! You will sweat monstrous amounts!

Then, after I do my "sweating" I go right into billy blanks fat blasting cardio for another 20 minutes.

Supposedly, accoring to workout calorie calculators on google, I am burning 1000 calories A DAY...I only eat 1800. So, i'm wondering, should i be doing this EVERY SINGLE DAY, or should I take a break in between? I've been dropping weight fast though, (already 5 pounds my first week!) And I can already tell I'm feeling waaayy better/more energetic.. what should I do past this?

    Thanks all
  • If the workout makes you feel good and you aren't having any pain or extreme soreness, then sure, do it every day if you like.

Don't be afraid to take a day off here or there to let your body (and mind) recover. As the workout begins to get easier you can increase the time spent on the treadmill, maybe do running intervals (I'd recommend not using the hand weights for those), etc.

If you begin to get bored with your routine you could add some different DVDs, weight training, or try some outdoor exercise (walking, running, hiking, biking) etc.

To me, the key is enjoying moving your body. And it sounds like you are having a good time, so keep up the great work!
  • My goodness, woman! You're a workin' out monster! That's great! I definitely want to back up what "Tyler Durden" said: don't be afraid to give yourself the day off or scale it back just a tad every now and again, maybe even every other day if you feel tired or sore. Listen to your body; if you feel bad, you're over doing it. The right amount of exercise will make you feel good, and you'll be able to feel what's right for your abilities.

1000 calories a day? That's awesome! Go, you!
  • I hate exercise. I cannot make my self get up and do it for even 5 min.I know I have to get past this to see results but yuck!

hi tracy, the thing about exercise is that it will not only help you lose weight, it will make you feel strong and better. exercise is not just for weight loss, it should be a regular part of your life. just like brushing your teeth. and the key is that it doesn't have to be in a gym, or an exercise DVD...it can be a 30min walk in your neighborhood every day. or going for a swim, or a bike ride,...
it is part of a healthy lifestyle. maybe you can look at it that way to get yourself going? good luck!!!
  • Thanks guys for the support! Oh so helpful!

Tracy: I really used to hate excercising as well, One day I went with my sister to her gym with a free day pass. I worked out for about 10 minutes, and stopped because, well, i hated it. haha.

But after that, I found that I loved the feeling, and started working how I wanted to work out. I kind of fell in love with it...Now, i'm not saying it's the same for everyone, but I love the soreness, and me and the sweating, and, well everything. Don't feel like you are restricted to any machine, (even though I work out at home) but sometimes it can be fun!

Tracy, keep at it - keep trying new things. Don't give up. It took me 50 years to find an exercise regimen that I enjoy.

Don't be afraid to think outside the box. ANYTHING that gets your body moving can be exercise - dancing, gardening, walking, etc. I actually am hooked on workout games on my Wii at the moment.
  • evieistrying09 -- if this is working for you at the moment, keep at it till you don't see any results, when this point arrives it'll be a "plateau" we all get them at one point or another. When you reach a plateau you'll either have to tweek your workouts and or your food intake. To change your workout you could start doing HIIT (high intensity interval training) where you warm up for 5 mins, then brisk walk or jog for one minute then walk for one minute, do this 10 times for a total of 20 minutes... It's a quick workout but it sure does the trick... You could also add weight training after the HIIT instead of the video, that'll be a nice change too... Anything works as long as you change things up every 4-6 weeks....

Here's a good article about Walking or Running With Weights you have to be very careful.
  • Tracy - there are plenty of things you can do for yourself even to just get acclimated to exercising. I started my current plan of weight loss/whatever you want to call it about a month ago. My first step was just increasing my movement, shoving in extra walking whenever, which was really hard for me since I have knee and foot issues. I fit my extra steps in when I got to the bathroom at work every day! My office is at one end of the hall and the bathroom is in the middle. Instead of just going to the bathroom and back, I walk to the end of the hall first. I've been trying to do that every day for the past month, and while I sometimes forget, I'm noticing less pain in my knees and feet. I've also gotten to where I can walk a full mile without having my feet flare up where as 5 weeks ago, I could barely make it across the parking lot at work!

Some people like to jump in feet first, and for me, that just doesn't work. I get worn out quickly, and I just quit. The way I see it, though, is that you have to start somewhere, and if it's with 50 extra steps a day, so be it. Something is better than nothing, especially when it comes to making changes and forming new, better habits for your body.
  • If you're in the obese category, it's enough to exercise regularly, doesn't really matter what it is, IMO. Of course you'll see better results the more you work out.

I really would not try to calculate how many calories you are burning, there are just too many variables and the calculators that measure calories burned while exercising are not very accurate.

Think of exercise separately, as an added benefit to your weight loss and body. If you don't think you'll burn out on your present regime, I say go for it!
