Default any gym advice??

I'm super excited because I'm going to the gym with my hubby for the first time since I started my weight loss...but I don't know where to start. Does anybody have any advice on what would be a good first workout.

I've been doing Tae Bo and walking on my treadmill at home. I don't know if I should just get on the elliptical, join the 45min step class then follow up with the 15min abs class or do some cardio then try some weight machines.

PLEASE HELP!!!

I would start with the step classes, it's a good way to ease in since you are being guided through the workout. I personally love the aerobics classes mostly because it is a good solid hour (at my gym) workout and no lazing about. I never work that hard on my own so it's good for a butt kick, and you also get the social aspect of it.

This reminds me I need to get back to the gym. Yikes!

You could always rotate machines.. I like the elliptical machine, I tend to burn more calories on that. Sometimes I do the elliptical for 30 mins then go to the treadmil for 15 min and bike for 15 min.. I hope that helps a little.

When I did the gym before, I really liked Spinning classes and I really liked Cardio Kickboxing. I am not coordinated and all the steps in aerobics class freaked me out. I was more focused on the moves than the workout and miserably failing them at that.

You could also just pick a machine--eliptical, treadmill or whatever and watch the weights being done to get ideas from others. I also really like the torso rotation machines.

To start I would do some classes and try the cardio machines. As for the weight machines you should really get someone from the gym to show you around the machines because you can seriously get hurt on the weight machines if you don't know what your doing OR if you know someone that has been a gym goer for a while ask them. If you can possibly afford it get some sessions with a personal trainer and and get a routine set up, this is the safest route.

I would suggest starting out slow. The best thing would be the treadmill, eliptical (just be careful if it's your 1st time), stationary bikes & beginner classes (if your gym offers them). Some gyms offer a one time free personal training...you should check into that.

I just started a gym & I got today for the first time. I can't wait for spin class & kick boxing. I have been doing the Barry's Bootcamp at home as well as walking the track (with my dogs) and playing tennis. I just hate being out there after dark & my sweetie will be traveling, so joining the gym was the safer thing to do. I will still try to squeeze in some walks with the boys (dogs) at least twice a week + weekends. They need exercise too.

Thanks everybody...I've already used up my 1 free session like 2 yrs ago when we joined the gym. I used to be one of those people who worked out at the gym religiously and knew how to use all the machines, but it's been about 2 yrs since I've had a solid workout routine. I think I'll try a class tonight then maybe the cardio machines next. I wish I could watch people while on the machines, but they have them facing so that you have your back to the machines.

I'll let y'all know how it goes!!

I think it depends on your fitness level. The step classes I go to are pretty intense. In the past when I have gone straight to the step class I've had to leave in the middle because I was having a really tough time. When I started exercising again 6 months ago, I worked out for a month on the treadmill and elliptical and built up my endurance. Making it through the class was still tough. Also, if you are not familiar with the movements its easier to learn when you have better control of your breathing and heart rate.

I think spinning is better because you can control the resistance and can pace yourself according to your fitness level.
