You're not going to build bulk in your legs with an elliptical...any motion you can perform repetitively for a long period of time isn't going to build bulk. (To build bulk, you basically have to exert your muscles in such a way that you can only repeat less than 10-12 times in a row...obviously, on an elliptical, you can't put that much resistance, or you'd only be able to work out for a minute).
So, that being said, work at the resistance/intensity that gets your heart rate up high and burns the most calories...losing fat via burning more calories than you eat is what makes you leaner.
