Excercise with a cast? There has to be something I can do...right?

  • After working as an overweight nurse for 12 years, I guess it finally caught up with me. I've had pain and swelling in my right ankle for several months. I was barely able to walk after a 12 hour shift, my ankle would be so swollen and painful. After 2 doctors that couldn't figure out what was wrong, I finally went to an ankle specialist. He thinks I have tarsal tunnel syndrome, which is essentially the same a carpal tunnel...except it's your ankle instead of your wrist. So....long story short I have to wear this ankle/leg immobilizer for the next 6 weeks to 6 months. It goes all the way to my knee and I can't flex my foot when wearing it. The good thing is that I have no pain when I wear it and after 2 weeks, my ankle is feeling a bit better already.

As soon as I started having this ankle pain (somewhere in october) I decided I needed to lose weight. I am committed to losing this weight and doing whatever I can to get this ankle better. I'm sure weighing 225lbs and walking up and down the hospital hallways for 12 hours for 12 years wasn't easy on my ankles. I figure if you put a pumpkin on top of toothpicks the toothpicks are bound to break eventually....right?

So...I've been doing really well, eating whole grains, lean meat and fruits and veggies. I don't consider myself on a diet, just living a new clean eating lifestyle. I haven't eaten sugar in 2 months and I feel great. I try to eat as close to natural as possible. I feel like a new person, but I haven't done any excercise. Are there any excercises I can do with this cast on? I've been losing 1-2 lbs a week and I'm happy with that, but I want to excercise too.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    p.s. I love you guys.
  • Sounds like Shapely Secrets or Bodyflex would work. There is a thread here under "does it work?" or you can google those words.
  • Can you recommend a good video. I'm a little "slow" when it comes to figuring things out on my own. Preferably a tape titled, "excersises for people in casts".

    If you want specific recommendations,

would probably be a useful place to ask.

    Hope that helps,

    It does! Thanks.
  • If you were at a gym, I'd recommend the rowing machine and the hand bike. I did both of those when I had a leg injury. Broke my arm last spring, and could give even more advice about exercise with a broken arm.
