I have to disagree with the weighted hoop being "easier". It is just as challenging as a small hoop, and I would imagine with a small hoop you could go faster, but keeping that weighted hoop up is also a challenge as well. Plus, the resistance it gives you when moving around is so different than the non weighted hoops- you really have to work your hips to keep that dang thing up.
My oldest daughter is a hula hoop queen, and she says that although the larger hoops are easier to get going, it's more challenging for her to keep it up. Today, all the kids started walking down the street hula hooping- it was a hoot! They came back sweating bullets and went swimming right after. I haven't gotten to a point where I can start walking with it, but hopefully, in a week or two, I'll be able to join them. My kids all said that the weighted hoops made them sweat much more than the non weighted hoops. They were able to go further with the non weighted hoops. Both hoops have advantages and disadvantages (one burns more calories, one makes you work harder, etc), but I'd say either choice is great- whatever makes you move, have fun and comfortable- just do it! :carrot: Happy Hooping, everyone! Going to do mine after I get back from shopping. :D |
Good to know, Steelslady! I've never tried a weighted one, was only going by what I'd read. If the weighted ones are even more of a workout, holy cow, I'm glad I stuck with unweighted! LOL

just bought one off ebay it ways 230g is that enough?

Changed my footing
I was struggling with it until my tall, skinny son (who can hula hoop for hours-big brat) showed me that he moves front to back, not side to side like I was moving, and his right foot is forward of his left foot, while mine where side to side and really spread too far apart. Once I changed my stance and now move front to back, I am keeping it up longer. The only problem now is that the dog gets curious and wants to see what I am doing, thus hitting the hoop with her tail and knocking it down. She is a sweet lab, who just wants to be part of the action.

HA! My dog got curious too and made it fall and it hit him on the butt. he ran into the kitchen turned around and gave me a good barking at, LOL! Silly boy... He forgave me and he also learned to stay away when Mom is using that weird round thing, lol!

Diane, thanks for the offer. I live about 6 mins. outside of Ft. Smith, AR. I don't know how close that is to you. I do have a regular hoop but have been looking for a weighted hoop.

Well I've been hula hooping for 7-10 minutes every morning at Curves, (I go 5 days a week). I did a weigh and measure last week, I had been on vacation and I had a 2 lb gain, however I lost two inches, one inch in my abdomen. I don't know if it is the hula hoop or the crunches (I up to 45 a day) or maybe a combination of both but I'm not taking any chances I'm going to continue to hoop & crunch. I'd even like to get in a little earlier so I can hoop longer, I usually stop it because I have to go to be at work on time.
I think I need to check out the directions for making one. Has anyone found the weight ones at the stores with out having to order them online. |
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idCQQKr8Bso made me think of this thread. :)

That is good, she is great with those hoops. I drop mine if I try to take a step.
Thanks Diane |
Misti, where are you? I hope everything's ok, I haven't seen you around here for a bit. Hopefully, you're just busy and out and about. You're the one who got me started hula hooping again. :D
I love this hoop. I can do a whole song now, and the only reason I have to stop and take a break is because I get winded. Right now, this is aerobic exercise for me. Still, it is a blast, and I try to do about 4-5 songs a day, just spread out over 40 minutes. Usually, I do some walking or dancing inbetween, just to keep myself going. I recommend fast music- I was listening to The Carpenters song "Solitaire" on the TV, and let's just say, that song didn't help my rythym one bit. :lol3: Thank goodness cable has all those different music stations on, as I get bored working out to just my CD's- not enough variety in my music but it's a cheaper alternative to buying more CD's, seeing that we're paying for the cable anyway. :D How are my fellow hula hoopers doing? Everyone making progress, or do you feel like flinging that hoop into a dumpster? I'm waiting for our "Skip Its" to arrive- I ordered the six pack of them, as the kids all want to do them as well as myself. Hopefully, they'll arrive before tommorrow, so I can surprise them with them when they get home from summer camp (they have no idea that I ordered them). My oldest daughter was talking about how much she missed doing her old skip it, then I read about them on here a day later and decided to order them, as they are fun to do. Who knew that a lot of us would go back to playing childhood games to get in shape? All I know, is that I am having fun, and it helps keep the boredom at bay from doing the same exercise over and over again. Rock on, Hula Hoopers! :carrot: |
Hi Steelslady,
Have fun with the "Skip Its", I saw them on of a web pages I was checking out yesterday. I'm afraid that would be too hard on my knees. I don't do jumping well. I have been getting to Curves early every morning this week so I have more time to Hula Hoop. This morning I kept it going for 17 minutes, my feet were starting to hurt from standing in one place soo long. I tried moving around a little, I can't really take a step or I loose it, but I am having soooo much fun hooping, I could never do it as a chubby kid. I'm going this weekend to see if my local Home Depot or Lowe's sells the poly tubing by the foot, my DH thinks you can only buy it in large rolls. Happy Hooping!!! |
