Apple cider vinegar

Anybody trying this? My friend who is a walking encyclopedia of homeopathic remedies claims that the stuff will boost up my metabolism to burn more fat. Also he claims it will lower my blood pressure of which mine is high but under control with meds.

I have been researching online the benefits and drawbacks of taking in the stuff. I have Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar, supposed to be the good stuff with "mother" in it.

I have been reading conflicting articles with favorable article slightly outweighing the unfavorable.

According to the proponents of it they claim (and there have been studies done for real) that apple cider vinegar can help you lose weight, lower BP, kill bacteria in your gut and many other things but weight loss (through boosting your metabolism) and lowering my BP is what I am most interested in.

The opponents of it claim the studies were not big enough and it can damage the enamel of your teeth and irritate your stomach and esophagus if taken pure.

I tried two tbspns of it in a 8oz glass of cold water this morning and it tasted pretty good if not a tad bit tart.

Has anybody tried it? Preferably long term and can speak about the benefits or no benefit of apple cider vinegar?

Even short term I'd bee interested in hearing of your experience and opinion.

Suzanne 3FC 12-14-2008 04:48 PM

I don't have the details handy at the moment, but I recently read that studies have shown this to be a myth because as the body (stomach acids) digests the vinegar that the benefit is lost.

mescelestus 12-14-2008 06:36 PM

it is def. good to help detox...it cleans out the system (you'll pee a lot). i make a "tonic" with the apple cider vinegar, and raw honey. the raw honey has natural probiotics that help boost your immune system, and help you get over a cold faster. for me it is good, but i don't know about the metabolism...however the "detox" part could help with that.

With "mother" in it? What does that mean?

PhotoChick 12-14-2008 07:24 PM

Mother is starter for vinegar. It's a thick, sort of gelatinous mixture that helps start the fermentation process for vinegar. Kinda like the starter for sourdough bread.

Most commercial vinegars have been pasturized or processed and you don't get the mother. If you buy organic or homemade or farm made vinegars, you'll often get a clump of "mother" in the bottom of the jar.

But to the point - as Suzanne said, the whole vinegar diet thing doesn't work becuase your stomach acids neutralize the vinegar.

And there's no need to "detox" your body - with vinegar or anything else. Your body is designed to "detox" itself. Eat healthy foods, drink water, and you'll be perfectly "detoxed". :)

Anybody wanna buy a bottle of Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar? It only has 2 tablespoons of cider missing from it! LOL!

seriously! what am I gonna do with it if it doesn't work?

Can I mix it with a little olive oil and use it on a salad? :D

I'm telling you tastes kinda good in small diluted amounts! I think the bottle is more than a quart, that'll last me a LONG time!

Well, I use very diluted apple cider vinegar on my hair a few times a week. It makes is super shiny and gets rid of the frizz.

It also takes the soap scum off the tub really well.

I just wish it smelled better.

Suzanne 3FC 12-14-2008 08:17 PM

Enjoy vinegar for the flavor and make salad and deviled eggs :)

PhotoChick 12-14-2008 08:19 PM

It works to remove dry skin as well. A bath with some vinegar will help smooth your skin and get rid of flakes. :)

Uses and Tips for Vinegar ;)

nelie 12-14-2008 10:37 PM

I have apple cider vinegar but because I use it for recipes. Vinegar is also excellent at cleaning which is probably why the old wives tale of using it to clean your insides...

Amarantha2 12-16-2008 07:09 PM

I've been using apple cider vinegar for years whenever I don't feel well and while I personally don't feel it's a weight loss help in any way, it does seem to have a number of helpful properties in regard to health. I started using it as a child because my grandmother did and it's been in my cabinet ever since.

kelly315 12-16-2008 07:30 PM

Be careful trying to force too much vinegar into your system for a long time. I've heard that it will prevent your body from absorbing calcium- the last thing on earth we ladies need!

Amarantha2 12-16-2008 08:26 PM

Forgot to mention that I agree with the poster who says apple cider vinegar tastes good. I love it, but probably because I've been drinking it and using it in food since childhood.

I don't like white vinegar as much but white vinegar is the stuff you want to clean with and I like the way it makes the house smell, but then I'm a vinegar fan.

Balsamic vinegar is also wonderful as a cooking additive or in salads.

Edited in: Also forgot to mention that, yes, I mix it in water, and that I do not drink it all the time, just when I feel it will be of benefit, plus I do not claim any benefits from it for others nor say that it will not be of harm, t'is just that for me, I find it a beneficial "remedy" to have around, much like aspirin.

choirgirlhotel 12-16-2008 08:43 PM

I've been using it at the advice of my naturopath. I found that right away I felt like it curbed my appetite, but that was only for a few days and I don't really notice that anymore. I've only been taking it for 2 weeks now.

lodyangel 12-29-2008 02:25 PM

I took the apple cider vinegar pills a few years ago. I felt better while I was on it, and at the time I was constipated a great deal and it cured that problem. However, I did not lose weight.

InnerChild 12-31-2008 08:35 AM

I take two apple cider vinegar capsules three times a day to keep my gallbladder in check. It helps to soften and even disolve gallstones therefore making them easier to pass naturally.

Amarantha2 01-01-2009 02:03 PM

Lol, I just drank some because my grandmother always drank it on New Year's!

I like the taste.

Joni 01-08-2009 08:54 PM

i tried drinking it and about puked lol.... tried the pills but didn't notice any difference ?

tiggy123 01-09-2009 05:16 AM

Don't know if this is the right place to ask, but could someone let me know how I could use apple cider vinegar in cooking? I've never used vinegar in cooking, and now I have a whole bottle:?:

I don't really cook much with it,but I add a very small amount to my split pea soup now and then.It might make a good salad dressing.

I do alot of cleaning with it though.I've added it to my laundry, clean my windows with it,clean the bathroom and kitchen sink faucets(makes them really shine!).

I tried drinking it and taking apple cider vinegar pills. It never did anything for me,besides make my stomach kind of blah feeling.

CookieQueen 01-11-2009 05:19 PM

I am a fan of apple cider vinegar because it really wakes me up in the morning, lol! I don't drink coffee anymore but this really gives me the kind of jump I need in the mornings. I also love it mixed with olive oil and a bit of honey as a salad dressing.

I have not noticed it being useful in my weight loss efforts, but your mileage may vary.

Amarantha2 01-11-2009 07:35 PM

Tiggy, it's good, as Cookie Queen said, with olive oil (or you could try safflower oil also) in salad dressing or in deviled eggs or egg salad. A little bit of apple cider vinegar perks up a lot of things, especially egg dishes. It's used in a recipe I have for tofu scramble that supposedly tastes like scrambled eggs (it doesn't). It's good in potato salad made with olive or safflower oil also (not great with mayo, though).

***
It's also good as a mouthwash, in my opinion. I believe my dentist thinks I shouldn't use it but I think it's great, not all the time but on occasion.

Your coworkers will wonder where that vinegar smell comes from, though. Drinking it has the same effect.

***
Even though it's white vinegar that is used for cleaning, I've also used apple cider vinegar. Again, I just like the way it smells.

I love to sprinkle a little vinegar on cooked spinach and also brussel sprouts. Yummmm. In the old days I'd put some in a mixture of mayo & sugar for a tasty coleslaw dressing. It is also great as already mentioned as a finish rinse for your hair.

Oh....and I LOVE a splash in my navy bean soup. I mean really, it's to die for!

Me Too 02-28-2009 12:09 PM

I have some ACV also, and was downing a shot every morning, boy oh boy does that stuff burn.
I read somewhere that it should be diluted in water and add some honey if desired.
Every morning I have flax seed oil, and metamucil and once again ACV plus all my vitamins and pills, and that's all before I even have my first cup of coffee.

glitterducky 03-01-2009 01:17 AM

I read this and thought...oh god. I tried this one. The taste was horrible....and such a torture to drink. I found no difference at all.

Bumbleberry 03-24-2009 02:33 PM

I've used apple cider vinegar to help me feel better when I'm sick, and I use it to exfoliate my lips. Yes, it hurts. But your lips feel REALLY soft afterward.

rainy 03-24-2009 02:42 PM

I have used it some time ago and it didn't work at all with me...

fendrgoddess 05-08-2009 09:54 PM

I took a couple tablespoons a day for about 2 weeks ( in very thick strong tasting juice) because I thought it would help my skin, which it didn't, but I did somehow lose 4 lbs by the end..........now that I need to lose wieght it doesn't seem to be helping as much. If you do use it, brush your teeth with baking soda, or rinse with baking soda and water so the acidity doesn't ruin your teeth.

beingaimee 05-09-2009 10:35 AM

I wanted to share my ACV experience with you all. It has been great for me and I have notice a huge difference in my energy level, skin, and possibility weight. I can't really say that it has help with my weight loss since I have been exercising and eating well. This is what I do.

Morning: 8oz of warm water & lemon juice

5 minutes after:
2 cap full of Bagg's Organic, unfiltered, Unpasteurized, ACV
4oz of R.W. Knudsen Just Cranberry Juice (it has no sugar and is really really tart)
10-12oz of cold filtered water

I started this about 2 weeks ago and like I mentioned before notice a big difference. I used have a drink coffee about twice a day. Now I have no cravings for it at all. Poor Starbucks. lol. Both my sister and my mother are doing this too and they do like it a lot.

dbweaverjr 08-09-2017 11:29 AM

It Works

It works. Believe me it works. Add 3 tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar and 3 tablespoons of organic lemon juice to a 16 oz. bottle of water. Drink the mixture first thing in the morning for 1 month (6 days a week. Take one day off). It will take about 1 hour to finish the drink because of the taste. I lost 23 pounds in 40 days. Believe me, it works.

dbweaverjr 08-09-2017 11:32 AM

I know that fad diet companies hate to hear this news, but you can stop spending your hard earned money for nothing. Apple cider vinegar will make you lose weight...believe me.

Wendiendi 09-02-2017 06:36 PM

I did not notice a difference.

YolaLendres 12-27-2017 11:41 AM

Apple cider vinegar is considered of the fad diet .. you can read more info from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_cider_vinegar

Erikadetox 02-20-2019 01:40 AM

Love it, it’s always helped me!

camfree27 03-30-2019 10:38 PM

Yes, I agree with Amarantha2. I use it for a number of properties and its good, but for noticeable weight loss, I don't think so. Many of my friends use it too but I don't think they're applying it to their weight loss goals. Good luck!

booo57 01-06-2020 04:46 AM

I like more Balsamic glaze and salads with him...
Especially tomato ricotta salad
Yammy!!)

yogalantic 02-12-2020 03:22 PM

I think it helps with inflammation and balancing your body Ph. It's gross but I am learning how to deal with it. cheap enough to buy, a lot out there are raving about it. I am taking it for the last 3 weeks.

For me, it's more about discipline and creating a habit. I also use it for teeth whitening :)

I will update you'll if I see any difference. Good luck!!

leo1122 10-18-2020 09:05 AM

looks okay
i will try that

dreambiguni 10-18-2020 02:41 PM

I thought using apple cider vinegar for weight loss was something new (shows what I know). But there are some videos that I've found really helpful.
