  • Just curious if anyone on this diet had heard Dr. Oz talk about colon cleanse on Oprahs show? I am trying to find out if there is a way to do a healthy colon cleanse or body detox? Especially one that won't have me running to the bathroom all day.

I had heard him talk about stuff that looks like "tar" inside us and he had suggested a colon cleanse, but I don't remember the name of it.
Sorry if this has been asked before.
    But thanks in advance
  • Did you hear him say that? I'm confused. I know that there are some detox products out there that lie and say they are recommended on Oprah and other programs. But it's a marketing scam.

Dr. Oz has said in the past (and I heard him say it on the program) that detox and colon cleanses were useless. He said that we need to consume enough fiber in our natural diets, and drink enough water, and that is ALL that it takes to keep our bodies naturally cleansed. His exact words (and I really did write it down when he said it because this topic comes up so much here) If you eat the right foods, it will leave your body in half a day anyway.
  • I have heard Dr. Oz say that colon cleanses aren't needed. I have his book (You On a Diet), and I don't remember him recommending them.
  • Yes I heard him say it on Oprah, and I heard him say it on another channel, does he have his own show on FIT TV? I 100% certain I heard him say it.
I thought they were scams, but when he spoke of it, and the tar, it sounded so disgusting and I wanted to get "cleansed"
  • Here's a little blurb that shows Oz's thoughts on the need for colon cleanses:

    1. Is there any truth to the five-second rule about dropped food?

Most food you drop is still perfectly edible. If it was in your eyesight the whole time, you can pick it up and eat it.

    2. I get these e-mails about colon cleansing. Is it a good idea?

You'll get rid of more crap by deleting the e-mails. The intestines empty themselves completely if you eat a high-fiber diet.
  • I am wondering about this product as well as the acai berry. Thought it might be a great way to "jump" start my efforts. I feel so sluggish and do have a "budda" belly of growing proportions. I hestiate with these product bc of lack of clinical trials but am curious as a food supplement. Grateful for any information anyone might have.
  • I've heard very mixed messages about detox diets/products in general- I guess there are a lot of them that really don't do anything. But then again, from what I've seen of Dr. Oz, it seems like he wouldn't advertise something that didn't work. So, I don't know, if it's not too much trouble, maybe try it?
  • We need a sticky on colon cleanses!

Colon cleansing is utter garbage. There is no pill, drink, mixture, or product that you need to buy to clean your colon or detox your system. Eat healthy foods, drink lots of water, and exercise some and your body will take care of itself the way it's supposed to.

The only thing you do when you buy a "cleanse" is waste money on a product you don't need. The worst it could do is cause you to become dehydrated or remove necessary bacteria from your system.

Avoid the hype. You don't need colon cleanses or detoxes. You really really don't.

  • I too was curious about some of the advertisements for the colon cleanses.

There's no better colon cleanse than the prep you have to do for a colonoscopy. Lo and behold, I did not find any evidence of tars, stringy things or any of the goo that they claim is rotting in your insides.

So I think colon cleanses are a bunch of bunk designed to separate you from your money like any other useless fad.

Eat a daily supply of fruits, vegetables, fiber and water and you will keep the pipes cleaned, just like Dr. Oz says. The body has a remarkable way of taking care of itself if you take care of it.

I didn't find anything either, but my insides were so clean they squeaked Any weight that was lost, was quickly put BACK on when I ate or drank after the colonoscopy. The stuff the ads show as coming out of the colon is really just the ingredients that you are ingesting with the colon cleanse product. Its a powdered gelatin substance that when mixed with water turns into a gel and then it forms along the sides of the colon. The colon acts like a mold and then ta da.. out come this stiff shaped just like your colon.

If you must try something, spend 5 bucks on a bottle of Fleet Phosphasoda that physicians use for bowel prep before medical procedures. You can get that at any drug store. I drank half the bottle every 4 hours before the prep.. and don't leave the bathroom!

Oh my lord that stuff is DISGUSTING.

But yeah, if you want to get cleaned out, that's the stuff to do it. It'll keep you in the bathroom until you're begging to come out.

There seems to be some confusion. Dr. Oz hasn't advertised any type of colon cleanser. He says we don't need it.

Boy Howdy is that right! I have to do that every 2 years and I'm not looking forward to it. By the same token, I do enjoy the "joy juice" they give me before the procedure.
  • I think by and large, you just can't beat Mother Nature. Man cannot possibly improve upon anything she has set forth. Water and whole foods all the way!
  • I could be wrong but I read one of his books and never noticed him saying anything similar to what is being discussed here, other than if I recall recommendations for eating fiber, as all physicians tend to recommend.

In general, my opinion, although not a physician, is that the idea that the colon needs to be cleansed, especially as relating to weight loss, is a false idea.

Nature made our bodies to be a self-cleaning mechanism and that works pretty well for me, but to each their own.
