I will be interested to see the ideas folks post...I twisted my knee a week ago, and I am feeling frustrated at not being able to do my usual 2 mile walk a day. I tried water aerobics, which went fairly well - except the pool is getting awfully cold! I know you can get a wheel, kind of like a bicycle, that you can pedal with your arms to burn calories. Doing weights with the upper body only is an option too.

I injured my knee (or something weak in it broke down) in April. I'd been walking before that. So I've explored ideas for exercising.

Depending on the injury, you could consider using an exercise bike. If you can move the knee but not bear weight on it, this is a great way to warm it up and get in some range of motion, keep up strength in the muscles. You may want to wait a week to let some healing start. DON'T do this if it'll hinder your healing. In my case, the physical therapist felt it helped. It certainly helps relieve some of the pain and stiffness, though when my knee is swollen, it's not worth doing at all.

If you can get down on the floor, or if you have a very firm bed, you can do some floor exercises: situps, leg lifts (with the other leg, and maybe with your injured leg if keeping the knee straight won't aggravate it), yoga stretches, Pilates.

Red face Thanks-

Thanks for the ideas.... I am actually in the process of setting up an appointment at a specialists. I just went back to my doctor's today and have to wear an immobilizer until I see the specialist. I will probably have to have knee surgery, this is what the regular doctor thinks.... \

Thanks for the ideas... I had an idea also..I am going to get an exersice ball that I can do certain moves like sit-ups, that sort of thing.. they are on sale at Kmart this week. I am also going to do tapes I have an focus on the Arm portion only. I hope the specialist might have some ideas also.

I have bad knees also. I have some tapes called Chair Dancing and Sit and Get Fit that are good. Upper body strengthing is also a good thing to start especially if you might have surgery. You need those muscles for crutches or a walker.

I too have a knee injury, as well as osteoarthritis in my knee, I also have a arm problem, soon going for second operation. What I do is get down on the floor carefully, I do sit-ups as someone else suggested, then reaches to the sides of my knees, if you can bend even one knee, leg lifts, with arms under the rear. In a chair you can lift light weights, from arms extended down, to arms at sides and up to shoulders, then shoulders over the head, as well as from arms behind head and straight up, bend down behind head. Hope some of this is helpful to you. Get a doc's okay before doing anything with the knee though. Good Luck Sharon

Definitely try aqua aerobics! I know several people who do it without injuries because it's a great workout - but it's also excellent for those with injuries like yours. Otherwise, there are several routines based on fit balls which have modifications for injured participants.

It's great that you still have the determination to exercise despite your injury!
